Thanks! That's annoying - it means most of the stages are before 3.30pm in England which means I'm still stuck in school...

And just to confirm, if it says for example, the Eurosport coverage for SS1 starts at 11:45, it actually means 10:45 for the British audience? This 'time thing' always confuses me!

Dan Barry from Ireland is meant to be doing it :)

Yep, that was announced before Christmas, co-driver will be Martin Brady. Daniel Barry is reigning UK Evo champion. Should be in an Evo IX I think.
Should make 6 Irish men in the rally (Boland and Meeke crews), a record I think (ok, not the most significant of records).

Very good news. Do you know his program for this year or is it not announced yet?

It´s not announced yet. But I´m afraid that Monte Carlo rally could be again his only rally in this season, just like last year. :S Well, he did one small rally with zero car, but with just 2 rallyes per season and almost no testing, it´s hard to get good result, especially on rally like Monte Carlo.

He had a year with Ford in WRC? He was beaten by IRC boys in his home event too.

Mirek
7th January 2010, 19:17
He didn't fight with IRC boys in Barum. If he crashed, he would lost his national title chances and also sponsorship for 2010. It's shame but things just went that way and he simply couldn't risk. It's not that easy as You think. When You have Your own car (and only one car) and Your sponsors have exact targets, You can't do silly things which could spoil everything. And anyway, he was the first of privateers. What's wrong with that?

I also try to find a general rally guide about montecarlo so to dont have many problems finding the stages and going to the best parts of them. Any other help-advise-suggestion would be appreciated.

Here are google earth maps: http://planetemarcus.free.fr/googleearthmap.htm

You can use google places to have better idea about them. Sometimes they are available in 3D.

Here are ACM maps: http://www.acm.mc/ramc/ramc_main.php?page=2010/speciales_2010.php

What worth watching very much depends on the weather but generally You find nice places on every stage if You don't fear some walking. Be aware that stages are closed for public often around five hours before start! I wouldn't go only to stage Burzet if there is no snow. That stage is completely on wide wide road and mostly uphill.

Some places around Valence You might know from videos which I remember...

SS Col d'Gaudissart (I'm not absolutely sure about it)

Hard left corner downhill, Basso made a spin there and Garde was off last year: 44°59'31.82"S, 5°19'30.44"V

Hairpin left downhill, quite spectacular: 44°59'55.25"S, 5°19'38.23"V

SS Labatie d'Andaure

Very good place where Sarrazin went off. We were there last year when it was very icy (few hundred meters from there Vouilloz crashed in second run). GPS: 45° 5'1.45"S, 4°28'51.81"V

Another interesting place. There is a jump over a crossroads to a hard left corner (actualy only Hänninen jumped last year but it was spectacular): 45° 5'23.40"S, 4°29'32.14"V

Again same stage, hairpin right slightly uphill but last year almost eveyrone was sideways there as I could see on the video: 45° 7'7.93"S, 4°27'57.40"V

Excellent news about Toni.

Shame he is not in a better car, but if his Punto is well maintained and well set up it can still be competitive (see Basso's speed on tarmac last year)

Of course, if the conditions are slippery then I guess driver skill becomes more important than outright pace of the car too.

taken from regulations:

The Super Special stage of Tuesday 19th January will not count for the Rally Classification.
This SSS will be run to determine the starting orders for the first leg, on Wednesday 20th January.
The ten first classified will leave on Wednesday 20th January in the reverse order from the Service Park.

This IMO is how Finland should run their opening SSS. But obviously there's is a timed stage.

Disadvantage to be first on the road on the Monte I'd say. First to find the bad places. There will be a lot of different tactics I'd say. TV coverage will come into this I'm sure. Because if you are 10th fastest (1st on stages) you're sponsors will get masses of coverage. While you could be 0.1 slower to be 11th fastest and maybe not even get on TV. So that will be an interesting sub-plot.

Not neccessarily... sometimes Eurosport run with the first on the road for the whole stage and sometimes not. I think you are right though that it will be quite important to get in the top 10 to make sure you get on tv!

Yeah true they dont always. I was just thinking back to last year on the Monte the first car got a nice bit of screen time. I suppose it also depends whether they have the chopper up (please God) because onboard does nothing for anyones sponsors.

Never seen anything like it. And by that I mean it is just wall to wall shots of Meeke's championship season last year. Peugeot UK continue to impress me. It just aired during the football pre-match buildup on ITV4.

I didn't follow the IRC last year much (except Monte) but this year I look forward to following Mikkelsen's plight. Supporting a driver always makes a rally more exciting for me!

As for Monte, I literally cannot wait either. I have exams the week after Monte, but revision may be postponed throughout the rally ;) I have always loved MC, right from Gatsonides winning in '53, with Nicolas in '78, Darniche in '79, Rohrl's dominance, right up to Bernardini in '96 and Loeb's dominance recently.

Obviously Papa Wilson wasn't at the test otherwise the Rally GB Focus bonnet would have been confiscated....... :)

Nice video, good turn of speed but unstoppable? Not sure about that Mirek.

I'm hoping for mixed conditions on Monte so that we can see how Mikko and the Fiesta perform against the opposition in all conditions.

Perhaps Mirek can tell us how different engine characteristics affect performance in snowy conditions? I have the feeling that an engine with strong low down performance will be better in these conditions as it would enable the driver to play with the car more whilst not having to be on high revs?

Question to some Monte Veteran:

Where (which stage and what part of the stage) are the places on the first 2 proper day where the most spectator expected (crowd)
Last night OK Turini of course.
I was at Monte some time but I would like to know opinions from more experienced people

No. All the 4x4 cars will start in any weather conditions (4x4 is for that reason), meanwhile drivers of 2WD cars will enjoy in Monte Carlo. :D
Just joking. Of course there is a possibility of stage cancellations. ;)

Hope so - it would be tragic if potentially the best event of 2010 is shortened because of too much snow! Especially when it is just that - snow - which makes the Monte so interesting.

He is young (25 years) and fast driver. This will be his third race with Fabia (only small events before), he is czech rallysprint champion with Lancer Evo IX. He can be fast, but this will be his first start on big event abroad (only some "smaller" events in Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia or Hungary). We will see, but his main priority is to earn experiences and finish the rally.

I was assuming Mikko would just run the same livery that the car was presented in. Seeing as this is essentially a marketing exercise/glorified test session. Not sure about Maurin's Fiesta - hopefully that will have a nice livery.

Currently it looks like that those who did some testing with wet tarmac should benefit.
It shows a lot of rain on the wetaher maps for Tuesday, Wednesday and little bit for Thursday as well. Chance of snow is only on higher elevations. So, it will be nightmare tyre choice again :-) Also morning frost is only visible on the higher elevations.

The most promising looks Thursday evening and Friday morning stages when we might have some snow showers and all that water freezing.

But in general we should see a lot of water everywhere as all that snow wants to melt and additional rain amplifies the result.
Thursday should be quite nice day in general for spectators. Not much precipitation but a lot of ice on the stages.
In longer term (Friday afternoon), it looks like spring is coming to southern France .-)

For the Ardeche region (Wed / Thu), for example Burzet (550m):

For Friday, for example Sospel (400m):

You cannot compare Monte Carlo weather with rally weather:-) Rally stages are far, far away from Monte Carlo :-) and conditions are way much different.

But I must admit that I red the most positive notes form the weather maps. That means in reality it can be even warmer. Sorry Pluto! But it can change very quickly on mountains and giving more than 3 days forecast is bit more like reading from the playing cards not weather maps :-) Couple of degrees less means that we have two figure skating European Chapionships in this week, One in Tallinn and one in Southern France between snow-walls :-).
