RBR Motorsport Forums Cup 2009

Round 5 ( semifinal ) : UK Rally
18,19,20 September 2009

Rally I.D.
As one of the oldest rallies in the world, U.K Rally
- known for much of its history as the RAC Rally -
has reflected the numerous changes in the sport.
In late September, Motorsport Forums drivers and teams
will converge upon South Wales to test their skills
In the semifinal rally of the season. The promise of rain, mud, and fog
are all thrown into the mix. The demanding stages
around Harwood Forest and Chirdonhead, are fast and flowing and,
when wet, can become as slippery as any in the world.

Or you could create driver profile called MULLIGATAWNY and if you use it, all stages and cars are available.
Other way is to run a new season aka championship on rookie level with damage off. It should be pretty easy to win AI drivers, though this options require time.

Are there any cars available beyond the 8 I see in my garage?

Because it was dry on shakedown stage, I hope that I find comfortable setup on the first stages on day 1. I hope I am able to get podium finish to keep my championship chances alive but first I must finish this very tricky event.

Here are my shakedown runs for the Polo S2000:

1:21.48
1:20.22
1:19.17

Tried testing for some rain stages afterwards and found things really tricky, so this should be another survival event - which is a pity actually cos this is the 2nd fastest rally in the game and its nice to let rip over these stages, especially Chironhead.

tannat
16th September 2009, 13:34
Anyone with setup advise for the shakedown stage?

On defaults the car positively bucks through the stream crossings (fords)....

NeverKnow
16th September 2009, 15:37
You could try some stiffer suspension settings. What happens is the car is bottoming out when crossing the stream and inertia from rear wheels are throwing the car up. At least I think that happens.
I usually apply some brakes when approaching and entering the stream and about at the middle of the stream I start moderately accelerate out of the stream. For me this minimizes the effect of the car jumping up when crossing the stream.

Bruce D
16th September 2009, 15:41
Yeah certain cars are better in the streams than others, and NeverKnow's approach is the same as mine, brake before the stream then jump on the power just before the stream, forces the car to be pushing back and putting weight on the rear of the car when going through the stream and reduces the amount of bouncing.

Depends how good you are at keeping the car on the road.... on the rally school stage it's very difficult as there are bends after the fords!

No way you can take it flat?

Well, you can, but the end result may not be what is desired! :p

There are cars which handle it better than others, but also don't worry cos the rallysprint stage is quite different to the actual GB event - cars that work there might not work on the event itself, well at least I've found that. For example of the S2000 cars the 207 is quicker than the Polo on the rallysprint stage but good luck with it on Hafren.

Nice entry list LCD, looks like we gain about 2 new entries every event. This could be an major event.

1:30.27 quite rough
1:24.67
1:22.64
1:21.82

Probably could have broken the 1:20.xx mark, but the car always got goofy going into the right hand 90 degree, or I would spin at the end of the stage.

A forgiving sim this is not!

Guys-I'd love to hear about how you drive in this game. On the stages with which we are now dealing it is like I am on glare ice-pins and needles the whole way..

Is it possible to be in 'attack' mode on these stages?

Perhaps the game is meant to emulate its' namesake, as I'll always remember him as Richard 'neat and tidy' Burns....

lcd
17th September 2009, 16:31
...Is it possible to be in 'attack' mode on these stages?...

Try to get some ''harmony'' In your driving, meaning drive like being one with the car...
Speed Isn't always what matters In that game! When entering In high speed the twisty
Harwood Forest or Chirdonhead sectors, just leave out the throttle and take all turns using the wheels
but always remember to take advantage of the ditches ( even the water paddles ) for some saving grip!
Throttle and brakes hits must be instantaneously there!

...On the stages with which we are now dealing it is like I am on glare ice-pins and needles the whole way...

That feeling will go away as soon as you get used to the philosophy of the game...
It's happened to all RBR players In the beginning. :D

I had two runs on the shakedown stage with the following times:

01:16.11
01:15.87

Allthough the grip is good here, I know it will be slippy for the wet stages. Just hope I don't get caught out! :)

@tannat

There one great advice for new drivers- IT'S WAY BETTER TO ENTER THE CORNER TOO SLOW THAN TOO FAST. Just drive rather slow and tidy, You'll become more and more confident with time. If you won't spin a car, won't crash it and wont' have to use SR or spectators asist, You will score some good points FOR SURE! I realised that long time ago, and soon after driving carefully i started to beat ai drivers in sp season even on hardest difficulty level.

Following the advice of my ''teacher'' Bruce I'll finally drive the Polo!!

But nevermind, hope we'll have you in final event...

Bruce D
20th September 2009, 06:24
Sorry about that S.Bera, we'll see you back soon though.

Finished my rally, it was a decent one, not too bad but I did have some moments.

SS1 - Very slippery through the open fields, but the forest section had a bit more grip, so you had to be on your toes. A stupid mistake near the end of the stage meant I lost about 30sec stuck against some logs.

SS2 - Not too bad a run, but I overshot both 90 right junctions, badly the first one and knew it was coming on the second one so I just spun the car around in the escape road. Total time lost was probably around 10sec.

SS3 - A good clean run through Falstone, but this is a tricky one so I was pleased.

SS4 - It says a lot about how much I hate Harwood that I had a clean run and set a personal best time ever on the stage!

SS5 - A much cleaner run through Chironhead 2, maybe a little slow in places but I got through fine.

SS6 - First medium left, straight off into the fence, spun around in the field and got back going again, probably losing 20sec or so. The rest of the stage went fine, so overall I'm happy with my event, but there was room for improvement.

lcd

Not happy with my rally. Very slippy stages, and hard to find a good rhytmn. Rolled the car on Falstone and had to recieve help from spectators before I was back on the wheels again. After this I decided to push a little, so hopefully I caught back some of the lost time.
The sprint stage went well however. Hope I can claw back some points for the championship.

Will be interesting to see the final results!

NeverKnow
20th September 2009, 11:22
Finished the rally and here is a short summary how things went.
SS1 - Started very slowly and too cautious on driving. Braked very early and didn't had 100% confidence in the car.
SS2 - Changed few suspension settings and immediately started improve my driving, though I did few small mistakes.
SS3 - I had a clear run on this one but I really struggled for grip.
SS4 - Everything went well for me on this one until there was a bridge crossing after 4th gear left corner. I arrived little sideways into the bridge and the front bumper hit the sidestone of the bridge and I spun off the road and into the river below. Luckily I was able to get back to the road with spectators help and had minimal time lost. I fear my podium finish is gone. But it could have ended worse. After the incident I started to push a little and fortunately the car didn't receive any damage from the off, only a bent rear spoiler and cracked front and rear windscreen.
SS5 - I really had a blast on this one and liked this stage. I had no incidents on it.
SS6 - Again like on SS5 I really liked the stage and didn't had any Incidents.
SSS - I chose too soft tires for this one and had worse time than I had in the shakedown.
Overall I am pleased that I finished. Here are few pictures if someone is interested:

I'm pleased with my performance but don't look too high :(
Rain made the whole rally extremely difficult with my car ''dancing'' in the rain :p

Wait for results and hore for the best.

I would like to ask you which stage was the most difficult... :grenade:

NeverKnow
20th September 2009, 14:40
For me the most difficult stages are Harwood and Harwood II because there are some very twisty sections. If you make driving error there, you will end up on logs and have a very hard time getting back to the stage. You will need to concentrate all the time on this stage.

I really hope results vindicate the use of Citroen C4 for this classic event!
Car felt great from the first to the last stage...Lighter than Xsara, more sensitive In steering;
I think was the best choice for such a demanding rally!
Rain or mud weren't there a problem, as I had a quick rhythm all the time using ditches
and water puddles for some extra grip! Ι'm happy this was the first rally, I used the brakes so little!
The start of day2, was a bit numb, but generally I'm very happy with my performance!
As already mentioned, was an almost 100% clean rally for me!
Wonder If the championship title Is gonna clear up to the next
final round of the season, or will have the champion sooner..!

Ah, the beauty of S2000 - always close stuff.

Good example, on our national championship round this weekend the leader had a "comfortable" 16sec lead and was shocked when he rival managed to take 8sec out of him in one stage, meaning he had to "charge" again and pull it out to 14sec by the finish. And thats a easy win... ;)

jimakos, I'm sure you got the better of me in some stages, I think I could have pushed slightly harder in Chironhead II for example. And you should have beaten me on the 2 stages I spun off on.

Submitted my times. Was using loaner laptops from IT at work. The first one I was given was great and ran the game faultlessly. Howver there was an error on it Sunday am and it had to be reimaged.

The second laptop I was given (on which I did the rally) didn't run the game so well-some of the video was choppy, especially the harwood stages... :(

Nevertheless, I stayed true to being ultra careful and had no major incidents save one spectator save after the finish line on Shepeherds, bumped a few trees, lost a door somewhere, and had a bit of a wild one on the SSS.

Spent positively very little time on setup. Would love to PM with anyone willing to share some wisdom on diffs on suspension..

Best of luck to all...

Congrats to everyone on that one. Nice win Hoofhearted!

jimakos, we had a great battle going there, some of those stage times were incredibly close. :D

Hmm, both championships are going to be pretty interesting going into the final round. By my calculations NeverKnow needs to finish in the top 4 in Sweden / Finland to take the title from LCD, while I need a top 7 finish to secure the sprint series.

In only 2 stages managed to pass Bruce!
Like his student is very good!
Looking for an overall win of Bruce in Finland!
Maybe there it's time to use a WRC car...

Congrats to Hoofhearted for winning the event and Bennisw for winning the sprint event.
As for me, I am happy with 3rd place. Though last event in the calendar is a tricky one and I really need to make a good preparation for it if I want to finish on the podium. Bring on Finland...

It was a bad rally for me! With all the stages in rain, I struggled for grip everywhere. The off on SS3 didn't make things much better either. Congrats to everyone for a good performance :)

My times reflect my comfort level with the car on these stages-absolutely nil!

Any degree of yaw in the car and I felt as if I was going off.......

Plenty of time to prepare for Finland, so perhaps a better result there.

Cheers to all.....

Yeah, if everyone else takes a 5min penalty then maybe I'd win overall!

Nah, I'm sticking with my beloved S2000 cars now, really enjoyed using them in GB and have just been testing some out in Sweden. Could be a really tricky rally.

@tannat - don't worry, your times weren't miles off so you can definately make it into the front half of the field soon. Just keep trying. The main thing that taught me was doing seasons against the AI, teaches you to keep it clean when competiting with the top level.

Cheers Bruce D.

By the by I did some CMR4 competitions on your site about 2-3 years ago. Is it still going?

Yeah I remember you from there. Unfortunately, no, it died a slow death, 2005 was the last season, then I changed jobs and didn't think I could keep committed to running the league. Only now could I think about doing it again. In the meantime the site owner was doing some studies and now working last I chatted to him so he can't develope the site anymore. Which is a pity cos that time submission system on that site was just way beyond its time and worked brilliantly.

That all started out as a Rally Championship 2000 league (I've still got the results files and stuff for it, would you believe, as well as the webpages I designed), then became CMR4 and then GPL stages before dying off. I then tried using the RBR Czech thing to run a RBR league but got flack from people there so gave up.

I've thought of running a CMR2005 league again, but I've seen the interest in the CMR2 WRC slowing down here so I'm not sure it would work. Besides, too busy competing here and dealing with a new baby, etc.

Slowing down-it is a seasonal phenomenon. Wait til the beginning of 2010 WRC.

Cheers on the baby, Bruce
