View Full Version : Which is worse?

The winter break or the mid-season gap?

Personally I hate the August break as this used to be when F1 really got going. France, Britain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium and Italy all over the course of a couple of months. Now it just feels like F1 stalls half way through the season.

Ok yes I'm bored - but you all are too. Yes? Yes! So how have you been getting your fix for the last 3 weeks?

Not really, I only need to do googling and found that my first crush is smiling sweet at me... :)

Watched some Indycar races and some football now that the season has started

Winter break is worse, and will be even worse now that they are not allowed to test between the end of the season and 1st January.

Anyway one can fill his week ends by going to the beach or mountaineering or other such in summer, while skiing is there for winter (and I can't wait to hit the slopes again! :D )

Winter break is 5 times as long and there's little other motorsport at the time. It's a bit annoying that there's still no F1 this weekend, but I'll live :)

Seems I'm in the minority then.

Personally I'm used to the winter break (and my wife likes having my full attention) but this mid-season holiday is doing my head in! :bigcry:

I'll agree with you. I can't really think of any other major sport that just takes weeks off in the middle of the season... it's a total momentum breaker, and I don't think it does the fans much good at all. For me, summer means... Formula 1 on TV... it's always been that way.

I hate the mid season break aswell. not just because there is no F1 on, but because most of the big motorsports i like to watch all have their breaks at the same time, WTCC, DTM, BTCC etc-I am surprised to not be dead due to severe lack of motorsport watching! thank goodness for america and NASCAR, oh and FIA GT.....

I can handle the mid season break - it's just like a long intermission. But I always have trouble accepting the last race of a season, especially when it's been a good one... or a great one, like the last couple of years.

I've watched bits & pieces of different types of racing during the break. Part of an ALMS race, part of a Grand Am race, part of a NASCAR Nextel Cup race, part of a NASCAR truck race, part of an IRL race. I even watched some MotoGP and World Superbike. But I think I've enjoyed watching NHRA more this year than anything besides F1 though. Other than Angelle Sampey not having a ride, it's been really good.

Angelle Sampey doesn't have a ride! How did that happen?

The August break feels like a waste of time that could be better spent racing.

The mid season break is the worst because it is in the middle of something. But making it essentially stupid is closing the factories for two weeks. It is even more messed up than the ban on testing. Goddamn socialists!

I record all the races so during the break - any long break I rewatch the practices, qualifying and grands prix.

I may watch the oval IndyCar races - the Speed Channel is too mentally deficient to show any DTM or any good European racing.

I cannot bring myself to watch the colorful fast taxi cabs aka: nascar [shudder].

I'm actually enjoying this break to rest a bit from Formula One. It's tiring to follow it 365 days per year, so moments of relaxation are needed - actually the Valencia race is nearing too fast. :D

Doesn't everyone in Europe take their vacations (Holiday) in August? My kids start school a week and a half before Labor Day this year, where usually, they start the tuesday AFTER labor day.
The dates weekends are falling on the calender the past two years has really messed around with the holidays and how the weeks fall. All of our government and bank holidays are really pushed around in the calender. It's not only F1 that has some really strange breaks.

THIS we can wholeheartedly agree on. I have to simply record the races and watch them so I can even FF through the lowbrow commercials. But you should try to at least watch NASCAR at the Glen and Maybe Grand Am, as it's actually very competetive racing and they race on some very good tracks, far more than ALMS has been.

Actually we also agree over Nigel Mansell.

Unfortunately since Nigel, there has not another Nigel, SINCE Nigel!

It doesn't seem three weeks since the last Grand Prix.

The only motorsport I've watched over that period of time has been a little bit of BTCC, and a couple of MotoGPs.

Been watching the World Athletics, that should tide me over until Valencia.

Also, been playing Madden 10, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and MLB 09 The Show for PS3. And F1 Championship Edition of course ;)

I'm not really sure. But whatever sponsorship she had fell through. She's running an aquarium/tropical fish store with her new boyfriend near her home in Louisiana, and just hanging out with her family. She says she's been to some races to cheer Antron on. Hopefully she'll make it back next year.

But still, a proven winner and champion doesn't have a ride? That's messed up.

Cracking Porkies race at the Knock over the weekend, wasn't it :)

Nothing like a BTCC weekend to reinvigorate oneself after the stagnant dross that F1 can sometimes be.

The mid-season break doesn't bother me. It's the summer so it's the type of weekends where we go off on day trips anyway, so I don't need F1.

In fact I'd rather F1 had their main break during the summer, and then ran the main season through the winter!

We do and what most people complaining about the mid season brake in hear forget is that its there so that the factory workers can take their families on holiday in what is a vey intensive sport throughout the rest of the year.

You're right, almost everyone does. That's why the 4 week break is not that bad IMO.

I missed that race lol but I saw the little highlights package.

I'm getting quite into the Ginetta juniors though they're good little cars.

The BTCC is one thing that has guaranteed good racing ever since I started watching it. I'm glad that the field seems to be getting stronger again.

Agreed. The mid-season break is a great thing for F1.

I think both Ginetta classes are wonderful sport.

Great to see Owy getting up the table a bit too :D

If you have kids, then you have little choice but to take your holidays in August.

We don't , since we don't have kids. Usually our main foreign holiday is at the end of April (only because that's our anniversary, I wouldn't choose that date normally!) and maybe a UK based holiday at the start of July.

We try to avoid proper holidays during August, as everywhere is busy and expensive.

Winter break is worse, mainly 'cos it's about five months with practically no motorsport. At least in the summer break there has been BTCC on, not to mention the start of the football.

Oh, and the whole Schumacher comeback/Renault ban/BMW withdrawl/Concorde agreement bits have kept the F1 sites busy!

I totally agree with you. The winter off-season has been around since they stopped going to Argentina and South Africa in January, and there's also plenty of talking points over the winter - new cars being released, drivers changing teams etc.

But the summer break, as you say, is a total momentum killer, it's even worse now we have the testing ban and the ridiculous mandatory two week factory shutdown - there's just nothing going on.
