Hello all,

About to go on vacation and loaded GTR onto my laptop. I received a message saying insufficient disc swap space or virtual memory. Must have 150MB.

Is there any easy way of dealing with this problem? I have MASSIVE amounts of hard drive space. What is the problem?

I'm not too computer savvy-it may be an easy solution.

Cheers,

Tannat

If it's a laptop my first suspicion is video memory. The majority of laptops don't come with the required hardware to run something as graphically intensive as GTR.

First things first: need the specs on your laptop.

What version of Windows are you running?

Windows xp

I daresay you are right. I'll try loading an older less demanding game...

Probably a good idea. :P

If you still want to get the specs, go to Start > Run, and type in "dxdiag". Let it run until the progress bar disappears, and then click "save all information". It will create a text file with your PC's information.

Open that file, and copy/paste the info here.

It sounds like the virtual memory is set too low for the game, especially if you have tons of HD space left.

Right click on the My Computer icon, then go to Advanced tab, click the settings button under Performance, click that Advanced tab, then you'll see at the bottom it says Virtual Memory, click Change, click Custom Size and change the max size to something much higher (you are setting the amount of kb the hard drive will use as additional RAM (eg 4000 kb = 4GB), once it hits the max number it stops, so set it higher than currently). I'd say start at 4 GB and see if that helps. You're only limit is how much free hard drive space you have.

This here is your problem:

---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family

The Intel 915 is a built-in video device that simply lacks the power to run a game like GTR.

Most times these integrated chipsets also don't have their own video memory built in, they "borrow" memory from your system RAM in order to function.

Some games (GTR being one of them) will attempt to start up but the lack of video memory halts them - and since it doesn't really know what to do with the situation, the program throws up the closest error it knows...that you're low on virtual memory.

GTR knows there's a memory problem of SOME kind but it isn't able to determine the exact issue. I've seen this one before, which is why it was my first thought upon reading your description of the issue.

I really appreciate your attention, lugnut. Totally clueless in this area....

No problem; IT is my thing. I'm the lead tech support guy where I work.

Fast lap times might evade me, but computer stuff I can handle. :P
