sure that's not Wheldons?
As a gay man I have to say I'm not happy with the reaction this car has recieved, and I don't think Alex Lloyd has all that professional or gracious in handling it so far.
There was a quote from him yesterday on ICS.com, "Despite apperances I am married and have a child."
I find it telling that just because he has a pink car he feels the need to flaunt his heterosexuality and shove his lifestyle choice down my throat.
Is he saying because I'm gay I should own pink things? Is my five-year-old neice a lesbian because her favorite color is blue? Can we just grow up and be like, "Oh, Chip found him a sponsor to race the 500, good for him." Instead of being caught up in juvenile idoiticy?

Unfortunately from stories and TV shows that I've watched.....that really doesn't mean anything anymore. You hear a lot everyday about families being destroyed because male's homosexual emotions come out later in life.

I'm happy we'll see a different color car. Last year Lloyd ran a white and lime green Wii-Fit car which was nice. But I like seeing some different colors in the field, and pink will be easy to pick out.
However, I'm not sure why someone like Sarah Fisher Racing wasn't able to pick up this sponsor.

I don't think it's just about the colour. It's about the brand personality of Her Energy Drink. Looking at their website it seems it is a product specifically targeted towards women. Unfortunately for them, all female drivers already have sponsors.
Then again, Mr Pink Lloyd may sell a product to ladies.

Your kidding right ? You dont find that slightly humourous ? Just because you are gay doesnt mean you have to lose all sense of reality and become unable to see that the colour pink on a man is going to attract a bit of banter - pink shirt, pink car, pink whatever. Its a joke, its not personal. Get off the defensive, put your lawyers phone number away and lighten up man.

Yeah colors by themselves are humorous. Me personally I think mauve is hilarious, I don't know about you, but I can't stop laughing every time someone wears a tope shirt.
It's not about the color, its about perceived masculinity.
Remember FUBU sponsored a car in 1999? It be the same level of insensitivity if Eliseo Salazar came out and said. "Despite the appearance of my sponsor I myself am not African American, nor do I enjoy hip hop."

Cmon MDS - do me a favour. This is everything that is wrong with society these days - PC has gone through the roof. I bet there are are ton of pit crews and drivers giving Alex Lloyd heaps of jib all May because he's in a pink car. They'll be having a great laugh - and good on em. If I wear a pink shirt to the pub - I can expect to cop some from my mates - thats life. Its nothing to get up in arms over. If Alex Lloyd wins the Indy 500 you better go into hibernation for a while...

In Atlanta we had an 11-year-old boy hang himself because a group of his classmates thought it would be funny to taunt him with gay slurs everyday. Bet they think Alex Lloyd's car is hilarious.

Harden up MDS. Why get uptight about that? Tragic about that boy - but theres far bigger issues involved in that than a racing driver stating he's heterosexual when forced into a colour scheme like that.

I think it's a great livery. We talk about it right now and everybody who will watch the race will notice this car. Mission Accomplished!
The pink fireproof overall is over the top though. Especially with the pink helmet he looks like a giant Chupa Chup

I think both the sponsor and the car livery is are cool, it's just the reaction has been a sophomoric and indicitive of a larger problem in society, which is probably one reason why gay men carry around so much baggage, and occassionally 11-year-old boys take their own life rather than deal with that stigma.
Also, on the PR front it just shows he wasn't coached all that well. As someone who works in relations I would rather have seen him use it as opportunity to talk about the sponsor and women's issues.
Like, "I don't have a problem with it, HER Energy Drink is all about supporting women, and I love women, some of the closest people in my life are women, like my mother, wife and daughter. I also have a sister. They've all tried the drink and said they like it, so I don't mind wearing pink to support them." or, "I'm proud to wear pink during May, I hope to already be locked into the field by Mother's Day, but I'd like to think of as a tribute to all the women in my life, including my mother and wife. Also, May is breast cancer awareness month, so if we can bring some attention to that by using their color, I'm all for it."
But to come out and defend your sexuality becuase you're wearing pink, yeah, that's a bit insensitve. No one asked him he was gay, so why'd he have to state he wasn't?

Wrong driver. It should have been Donna Mae Mimms. (And a cold one to anyone who can tell who she was.)
I remember having adolescent fantasies about her when she drove a Yenko Stinger at the long gone Mid America Raceway, in Wentzville, MO. Mid '60's - 70's, if I recall correctly?? Didn't she have another female driver on the same team?

Starter: I remember mostly a pink bug eye Sprite. The Mini may have been a BMC publicity stunt. I do not remember the 'B' but that is quite possible.
There was a match race with, I think Tullius, and she was beaten badly. That might have been the Mini.
The Keke car was a Formula Atlantic Chevron, a B34, I think. Probably an Opert car as Keke drove mostly for him in NA.

Old memory is hazy. You are probably right. I left FA mid 76 then back for early part of 78. After that just involved in club racing in Ont., Mich., Ohio and NY until 87. Now just a spectator and grouchy old f---.

I personally found it rather funny, and possibly make jokes about it, but it's really nothing serious. Although I do find it confusing as to what "HER" energy's target customers are. Is it targeting a female customer group, homosexual group or something?

The name means "Health Energy Revitalizer". Energy drinks . . . a dime a dozen now.
And the pink has something serious for guys. To guys, pink cars means the car title!

I think I have to say that any time a Hetero guy drives in an all pink car with a pink fire suit and pink helmet with "HER" printed all over the car, the guy is going to reflexively try to point out he isn't gay. Just like some gay people are very adament about saying they are out of the closet at every opportunity so we all wont forget it.
It is human nature to try to claify one's position or status in society, at least when the message is not clear.
I think MDS your point is taken, but I don't think he was being anti Gay, he was just pointing out he isn't gay, just like you had to inform all of us you were gay to make your point.
I wish you well and could care less if you were gay or straight. If you were boring, stupid or intolerent I would find THAT annoying, but you are not either of these so you are a member of the board. No more, no less, and your sexuality has no bearing on the argument really.
I think if I had to wear that much pink to compete in racing, at least I was doing it to try to win an Indy 500....but I would still keep my wife close!!!

following story is a bit foggy... I was young young at the time... and my late teens and early twenties were a bit a whirlwind so to speak...
about 30 years ago I was at the supercross at the LA coliseum and ..... big event etc....
one of the heats was some sort of special charity event... or maybe it was a trophy dash or something i can't exactly remember....
but one of the top racers... (again can't remember which, but Brock Glover is sticking in my head).....switched his leathers and helmut and came out on the starting block in all PINK..... head to toe.....the place went nuts.....
Her promptly took the hole shot.... and lead start to finish (<that i remember)
I suspect he felt he needed too!

Notice the white belt. The only people who wear white belts are old men on the verge of switching to suspenders.
It came out today the reason the 11-year-old boy was targeted was because he came to school with a pink backpack. The school district, which denied any bullying took place, admitted that he was targeted because of the color of his back pack, and they didn't much care, in much the way many of you are laughing at Alex Lloyd because of his sponsor.
“Following spring break, Jaheem came to school with a pink book bag, and there was some evidence from the students that the students said ‘that’s gay,’ speaking of the book bag,” Moore said. “Now with these students we asked them, ‘Well, what does gay mean?’ They said ‘gay means happy,’ and this is many of the students.”
Moore said that few students told investigators that they knew that gay is slang for homosexuals.
“But I would say that the term ‘gay’ did not have a sexual connotation for the most part. The children use ‘gay’ for anything and everything, the clothing is gay, the gesture is gay, what they say is gay, and that is a term they use,” she said. “Some students did tell us they had asked their teacher what gay meant and their teachers are the ones who told them gay means happy.”

Well I apologize, but, I think you're taking something in racing that is purely a money making proposition, and being upset that people are enjoying themselves from it. Even Pink Lloyd himself is enjoying the situation.

This thread started because someone wanted to laugh about Alex Lloyd wearing pink. Similar threads have been started for the same reason on other forums.
Laughing at a man who feels the need to loudly proclaim his heterosexuality just because he's wearing pink is justifying the behavior of the kids who mocked the 11-year-old for having a pink back pack.
I guess there are things straight people are incapable of understanding.
