This year, IndyCar will change the championship points system just a bit. The change is this..
Two points are awarded to the driver who leads the most laps in each race. One bonus point is awarded to the driver who earns the pole in each race. So the pole winner will get a point for qualifying the fastest. The pole winner will still receive the $10,000 Peak Performance Award for the pole as well, except the Indy 500, the award is $50,000.
The old system since 2001 had the driver who led the most laps during a race got all 3 bonus points. The points for the finishing positions from 1 on down will not change.
I like this idea. I think it should of been this way to start with. The Firestone Indy Lights Series does this points method too.

never liked giving points to a pole winner, its not where you start, but where you finish :( giving away points, just like what the NHL does

Awarding points for qualifying on pole will stop stupid shows like Helio/Penske put on at Chicagoland last year where they purposely drove under the white line to p*** off the IRL.
The reason they did away with pole position points was to get rid of qualifying only engines, and now that they have Honda as the only engine supplier, they don't have to worry about it.
It also gives the fans something extra on pole day for every race. Atleast they are running for something, and it throws an extra storyline into the races throughout the year.

wolud it help the IRL to have the "chase for the cup" like nascar has, seeing how the IRL year doesnt run 36 races, wolud the chase be more fun? or just hurt the IRL? what do you guys think?

I think that they shouldn't give points to every single person who gets in the race. I think it's ridiculous that Marty Roth gets 5 points for Milwaukee in 2008 after he withdrew Sat afternoon.

I'd rather give points to the pole sitter than anyone finishing outside the Top 10. In American racing, finishing inside the Top 10 is the most commonly used recognition of a driver's performance, so it kinda makes sense to award points to them.
Here's my ideal points system: 20-15-12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1.
Finish inside the Top 10, you'll get a point. Then you get one extra point for each position gained. The next stage: finish inside the Top 5, your points tally will increase by two for each position gained. Now, the next achievement: the podium. Finish on the podium, and you'll get three extra points for each position gained. And the crowning achievement: the Win, you get five points more than the best looser.

I dont like the points system in NASCAR and wouldnt want it in IndyCar.
And someone mentioned something about qualifying engines, they dont qualify the engine, they actually qualify the tub of the car, thats the only thing that cant be changed after qualifications(except a back-up car obviously).

I understand that DF, however, that is exactly my point. Back in the day, teams would run an engine that could run at higher horsepower for 4 laps. After qualifying, they would swap the engine out of the car for the race engine which can last 500 miles.
I'm not sure who put a stop to it, but whoever it was wanted to keep costs down, and keep safety under control by removing this higher speed engine.
Now that is not a problem.

It's easy to stop the use of qualifying engines, just add to the rules that you have to start with the engine you qualified with. Same goes for getting rid of qualifying tyres. Breaking the rule drops you to the back. As for the points system, I agree fewer points needs to be awarded - I think WSBK has a good spread with 25-20-16-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, but the top ten system suggested here is good too.
