Losail International Circuit hosts World Superbike Round 2 in Qatar

Update: March 10, 2009, 14.00 PM ET

After the exciting spectacle served up in the opening round at Phillip Island in Australia, the Hannspree FIM Superbike World Championship is back in action once again this weekend at the desert circuit of Losail in Qatar, the second of four overseas races and the second event in this year's 14-round calendar.

FIRST WINS FOR DUCATI AND YAMAHA - Phillip Island confirmed that Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) will be one of the favourites this year, the Japanese rider winning one race and finishing runner-up in the second. But at the same time it also highlighted the competitive and balanced nature of the series, with several riders in with a chance of fighting for the win. One of these was Yamaha World Superbike rookie Ben Spies, the three-times AMA Superbike champion spectacularly winning race 2 and demonstrating that he will also be one of the men to beat this year. Germany's Max Neukirchner also began the season well for Suzuki Alstare, fighting side-by-side with Haga right down to the chequered flag. Two more riders to watch in Qatar will be Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) and Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who this time will be aiming for a podium place.

PRIVATE PROGRESS - Even with the presence of seven manufacturers (Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha), the championship also offers the possibility for private teams, thanks to the technical regulations, to score good results. In Australia Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda) stepped onto the podium and Régis Laconi (Ducati DFX) came very close. Further surprises are expected at Losail.

APRILIA AND BMW ON THE PACE - Both the Italian and the German machines immediately proved to be competitive in their debut race, so much so that Troy Corser (BMW) recorded the fastest lap in race 1 and Max Biaggi (Aprilia) fought for a podium position right until the very end. The layout of the Losail circuit should reward the characteristics of the two four-cylinder machines, even more so given the fact that Corser and Biaggi have both won on this track. Kawasaki are the only factory team who appear to be struggling at the moment, but the Japanese manufacturer is working hard and improvements are expected in Qatar.

THUMBS UP FOR NEW SUPERPOLE - The new Superpole format passed its first test with flying colours. The knock-out formula (20 riders become 16 and then 8 for the front two rows) has added further excitement to Saturday qualifying and also looks good on television. At Losail the teams and riders will have to perfect their strategies, which are fundamental if they do not want to be left out for the battle for the front row of the grid.

SUPERSPORT - The opening round of the Supersport World Championship offered an amazing spectacle and Losail will be another chance to see some more slipstreaming action, in particular down the long pit straight. The favourites are still the two Supersport champions Kenan Sofuoglu e Andrew Pitt (both Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), but Anthony West (Stiggy Racing Honda) and Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport) can't be ruled out as well in the battle for the top places, while even the young Spanish talent Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki) has winning potential. Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) was also on the pace, while Garry McCoy and Gianluca Nannelli (Triumph) still have to get the new three-cylinder machine up to the leaders' competitive level.

Pre-event media activity

The pre-event media activity for the Qatar Round will take place on Wednesday morning at the Corniche seafront in the capital Doha. Seven top riders, one from each manufacturer, will have a Meet & Greet with national and international media and Qatar Marine Federation President and F1 boat champion Sheikh Hassan Al Thani, who will give a welcome speech. Riders will then have a chance to be in the boat for a ride around the Cornice sea area.

Lap records: Race - Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki) 1'59.156 (2008); Best lap - Troy Corser (Yamaha) 1'58.053 (2008).

The Qatar Round of the HANNspree Superbike World Championship takes place from Thursday 12 thru Saturday 14 March. World Supersport and World Superbike free practice and qualifying takes place on both days, with WSBK Superpole scheduled for Friday at 15.00. The two 18-lap Superbike races are scheduled to run on Saturday at 12.00 and 15.30, with the 18-lap Supersport race at 13.25 local time.

Qatar has a kilometer long front straight so we'll get to see who has the horses. I'm thinking there will be more Duc's up front--Haga winning both races is a good prediction. Fabrizio will be fighting hard for the poduim and I think he'll get one. Spies will struggle due to inexperience, but might still snatch a poduim. With the Aprillia still being developed, I doubt we'll see Max or Shinya on the steps. Max had to use softer tires to maintain the pace in Phillip Island which went to butter with 4 to go. I like Suzuki and Neukirchner on the podium over Aprillia. Someone on a Honda might surprise us, too...

But what do I know...

I think Neukirchner Spies and Haga will be the front runners in this round with maybe Rea as well

In SS the Ten Kate boys should be front runners as always along with West, Crutchlow and maybe Laverty, The long straight may help the Kawasaki to keep up with the rest.

can't believe it, Spies hasn't ridden before on this circuit and he's leading the way!
His bike is quite up adequate, as such it will earn the same praise if the new manufacturer can keep up the rhythm at the race being top three finisher as scored during qualification.

Spies is having an amazing opening to his WSB career - really quite something, especially as we know how good Tom Sykes is and so far Spies is clear out in front.

Pretty pleased to see Eugene Laverty on the front row as well, a Brit (well, Eugene isn't strictly but you know what I mean) one-two with Cal on pole. Ace.

That does not surprise me, the SBK riders use qualifying tyres, GP riders not.. Next to that: during the GP session it was quit cold

Cold in Qatar? I think it was around 20 degrees, that is for me warm. Testsessions are much more exciting in MotoGP than the races...

Anyway, I am looking forward to the races today. They would be again great.

Yes, I remember but I find 20 degrees not cold.

Very nice first WSBK race and the WSS was absolutely fantastic. :)

Spies is doing a "Stoner" and makes the races boring :p

SS was a great race, what a great result Laverty after the past 2 years in 250cc

He dedicated his win to the late Craig Jones

Rather impressive showing from Master Spies... bring back Bayliss :D

Aprilia/Biaggi equally impressive, hopefully we're seeing a build up to serious title contention within a round or two, otherwise Spies will overhaul Haga and that will be that.

Haga knows his way around the twin, he won 5 races on a Duc in 2004, and before that scored a bunch of podiums on the Aprilia RSV (and he actually started his superbike career in Japan on Ducatis). So it's hard to say he's still getting to grips with the 1198. Haga for the 2010 title?

Corser was strong in race two for a while. I think BMW, for all their technology, may have missed the boat - V4 or crossplane I4 power is clearly where it's at, as it was nearly 20 years ago with Honda's V4 weapons, before Ducati eclipsed them under regulations that leaned towards the twins.

Great work from Laverty in WSS, top result! McCoy isn't far off the pace though, I reckon the Triumph is ready for a podium fairly soon! And definitely a race win before the year is out.

It seems that the Ducati members made Haga a new person.. Haven't seen any brutal overtakings of him. Sure that helps on season-standings, and he is leading now...

We'll see, if Haga can keep this up he's my favourite.

WSBK -
Spies' performances in Rounds 1 & 2 have been astounding and IMO will inspire more rapid development of other brands and regenerate interest from the US of A in the series. His wins to date have not quite been "runaway" wins therefore I don't believe we are headed for a predictable procession.

In particular, I expect to see stronger showings from Suzuki and BMW in the not-too-distant future.

WSS -
Great racing again as expected and to see other riders taking it to the more predictable performing Ten Kate guys. An inspiring and deserved win by Laverty, top performances by Cruthchlow, McCoy and (for most of the race) by Aitchison and Harms.

Disappointing for West being about 6 km/h down on speed on the straight.

Spies was in control for the entire weekend.

The test will be on return to Europe as both PI and Qatar are pretty foreign to all riders, yet most of the serious challengers for the title are pros in Europe.

However the 3 consecutive titles Spies took in the US shows he is no mug!

Would we believe coincidence, finishing third at both races? They might be able to perform better than yesterday, I wasn't supposed to say that Aprilia would be able to keep its pace just a top three finisher...

Wow, what a beginning to the season! Ben Spies has been impressive to say the least and Aprilia equally so. Both WSB and WSS are more than living up to the pre-season hype and will go down to the wire I think. Remember the year is very young and that all riders have slumps during at some stage so it's an extremely long way to go. The commentator's crap about the situation becoming almost dire for Haga is beyond belief. They are the one downer to the series (though secondary for me to Kawasaki's still lack of competitiveness). But enough on that.

Eugene Laverty beating the Ten Kate boys - especially for top speed. Still a worry seeing such Honda dominance though Crutchlow should be consistently up there if he irons out the mistakes and McCoy is looking faster on the Triumph and really carved his way through the field after a terrible start. Hoping Kawasaki will turn sporadic speed into constant speed.

Finally, for those with a good memory, check out the scary similarities between the start of this season with the beginning of the 1998 season. Opening race taken out by an established star on a Ducati before an upstart rookie took the next three on a Yamaha. Guess who was on the Yamaha... ;)

Great performances from Spies, and a lot of other decent showings elsewhere in a field full of talent and mostly competitive machinery. Tom Sykes is bedding himself in now which is good to see, his showing in race two was very strong on pace so we'll hopefully see him right up the front soon too.

My highlight of the weekend was of course the WSS race - an absolutely classic and a brilliant, brilliant result for Eugene and all those at Parkalgar. I was getting a *bit* excited during that one!

Disappointing for West being about 6 km/h down on speed on the straight.

That was the same problem for Haga in WSBK, even more so, since he was 10 km/h down at one point. While he was doing 307 km/h on the main straight, Spies and Biaggi were doing 314 and 317 consistently. That Aprilia really has a monster engine, the way Biaggi drove around Haga on the straights. Haga still managed to bring it home in 2nd in both races.

Also, if anybody noticed, Haga was the only Ducati in the top 10 in Race 2. A pretty strong testament to his skill IMO.

BUT Ben Spies is on another planet at the moment. It looks like he is gonna fly away with this championship right now. Pure talent.

Clever strategy has been implemented by Spies, keep the distance close behind the race leader, measuring off the opponents' strength in the first few laps, make a right move to take over the lead when everything is possible. Riders could do that only if he knew that the bike has potency to make it possible.

Besides riding style of Biaggi which perhaps consumes tyres without enough grip when the race is approaching the end, or the rift of being difficult to take back once someone overtook him, the only one thing he can do with bike he is unsure the strength is just to try to make the gap as far as possible at the start. Being the race leader in the second race exceed the team expectation.

All the top three are great, Spies, Haga, and Biaggi. No need reluctance mentioning name. :)

Haga had 10 world superbike races experience and had 1 win and 3 other podiums as a wildcard before his rookie season.
