View Full Version : Two Freaking Ugly Cars

I looked up ugly in the dictionary and low and behold I say a picture of
a toyota f1 car and a red bull car. The nose sticks up in the air like some stupid shrew gasping for air. So far the rest of the cars I have seen look pretty respectable. I hope the toro rosso didn't get a car from red puke!

Ahem... Renault R29?

They're all ugly except the McLaren & Williams. Then again the rear & front wings simply look so strange. Ferrari is Ok looking but the F2007 was the rear beauty.

you mean:

Rare beauty?

Down here in the south, we do not use the term "rear" in reference to beauty in polite society, instead we say, "butt ugly" as in that is one butt ugly car :s mokin:

hmm different tastes, I think the RBR5 is the best looking car on the grid, F60 is a close second, but the Renault wins the award for worst on grid, they are all ugly compared to the 08 specs, but we all have to deal with it

You've got good tastes. Even though I find the F60 even better than RB with the new side pods.

Every 09 car looks like a toy car, as they have since the 1800mm width was introduced.

Renault wins the award for worst on grid
Ahem... Renault R29?
Last time I checked F1 wasn't a beauty contest!
Aparantly the R29 is purpose built within constraints of the 2009 spec's, with sound aero reasoning behind it!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72866
Striking with both a new livery and an aggressive shape, the new car is a departure for the team. Again, the most apparent feature is the nose treatment, but also the extraordinary sidepod exits.

The new nosecone arrangement takes some ideas from last's year scalloped undernose and applies them to the FIA neutral middle wing element.

In order to make this fixed aerofoil section add downforce, Renault have added a bulged nose area just above and behind it, taking the nose to its maximum width and filling in the space behind the front wing mounts.

For the balance of the sidepods, the R29 features deeply undercut sidepod fronts, with extra cooling inlets for the Magneti Marelli KERS system. Then the sidepods fold into the coke bottle area to form an extreme shape for the cooling exit.

As there is no cooling exit on the top part of the sidepod (although the rules allow for one), the exit area is entirely made up by the widening of the coke bottle shape nestling in between the rear suspension. More cooling outlet area is afforded by a exit atop the gearbox.

In order to make this fixed aerofoil section add downforce, Renault have added a bulged nose area just above and behind it, taking the nose to its maximum width and filling in the space behind the front wing mounts.

In doing this, the team have chosen a Venturi section to create low pressure and thus downforce over the front axle, an area that might otherwise create lift.

I have to admit I have started to absolutely adore the 09 rear wing. The 2008 wings look already odd - way too low. Proper wing is high and clear. :D The front wing should still be narrowed a bit though.

There is a good method to get used to the new cars: have them as your wallpaper. A good picture of an '09 car every week. Now the '08 cars are starting to look weird with all the silly winglets and low rear wing. This method helped me to get used to the Dallara-Honda when Champ Car folded and I became an IndyCar fan.

I whipped this up to see all of the cars together.

I could not find any photos of the STR. So that car is missing.

It's great to see how different all of the cars are in respect to wings, nose etc..

It's actually quite amazing to see how different they are.

Thanks AJP!

The profile view of the rear wings on the Force India and Red Bull makes the wing look very basic compared to the other cars, particularly the McLaren which has a lot of detail on the rear wing endplate.

Oh, and the Renault is the ugliest car produced in years. It's got a horrible shape made all the worse by a vomit-inducing livery.

they all look fine to me :)

now for a REALLY ugly f1 car google for the march 711

at least they are all very varied. I actually dont mind the Renault. the only ugly one is the red bull. The Mclaren is the best, and ill be hoping its the fastest!

Great work, AJP.

Ferrari wins the front shot beauty contest. Toyota, Renault and The Indian car are just hideous.

From the side its a close call between McL, Ferrari, Williams and RBR.

The Beauty List!

1)Ferrari
2)McLaren
3)Williams
4)Red Bull/STR
6)Brawn GP
7)Toyota
8)Force India
9)BMW
10)Renault :s

9th March 2009, 14:42
still didn't get used to them... so the least hideous would be for me the Williams and the absolute worst the Renault... not only the shape but the livery is really bad... but as many said> it's not a beauty contest... if the first brings the speed and the second the money... well.. the sacrifice will be worthwhile

a good topic for chit chat though.

I hope brawn kicks the sh!t out of all of them

I think that is the best looking car out there

jens

I don't know and don't care much, which ones are the ugliest - all of them are in a way interesting (at least a lot of variety!), but the most likable for me are:
- Renault (interesting innovative and aggressive design - the boxy nose represents some kind of brute strength ;) )
- Red Bull (innovative design and nice colours)
- Toyota (again innovative and pleasantly quick too).
BrawnGP is likely to join that top group too.

Yep, Renaullt´s nose is hideous. Instead of the idea of strenght, it is more like a cumbersome thing...

The livery is not that bad, i have seen worse things.

It is not in AGP´s photos (great post, BTW) William´s "antennae", "fins", "ears" or damn bits that should not be there if the FIA wants to keep the cars clean, and that looks also quite bizarre

Is it just me or is the BMW F1.09 starting to slightly resemble the infamous walrus nosed Williams BMW?

I think people will notice it relatively easy if only Alonso drives the BMW...

Can someone please explain how it is that the Renault, Red Bull and Brawn have rear wings that appear much wider than the others??

That R29 is ghastly! Abhor that lorry steering wheel too.
