No big surprise as Vassar and Tracy have always had a good relationship, but apparently PT and KVRT are working on getting a sponsorship package done for 2009.

KVRT co-owner Jimmy Vasser told Sun Media yesterday he is actively negotiating with Tracy and is seeking American and Canadian corporate support to help make the deal happen.
"I definitely think that PT has a few good years left in him," Vasser said. "I know he has some sponsors that he is working on. I just thought it would be a good idea if we worked together."
Vasser, who is also a former CART series champion (1996), said that Tracy's fourth-place finish at the Rexall Grand Prix of Edmonton in 2008 showed the 40-year-old still has the will and talent to win at the top levels of open wheel racing.
It doesn't hurt either, Vasser said, that Tracy's personality -- love him or hate him -- would be a terrific draw not only in the races at Edmonton and Toronto but across the IRL calendar.
"I think the series needs him," he said.
Vasser said that even if he is only able to put together a partial sponsorship package for Tracy it might be enough to get the "Thrill from West Hill" back in the series.
"If we can get a certain percentage done for PT ourselves we could maybe take it to (the IRL) to see if they can help," he said.
The current economic climate is an obstacle to getting a deal good enough to lure Tracy away from pursuing other forms of racing, most notably the NASCAR Camping World Truck series.
Vasser said that KVRT is also trying to line up sponsors for Oriol Servia, who drove the second team entry -- partially funded out of Vasser and co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven's pockets -- in 2008.

Clearly Dean didn't know about the Moreas announcement, but it's encouraging to see them working two veteran drivers. I also think its interesting that they might be asking TG to kick in some cash. I think Tracy adds value to the series. I can only speak for myself, but I'm a lot more likely to make the trip to St. Pete if PT is in the field.

PT will bring in more fans than Sevia and for the good of the series I awould sign him but Servia had his best season ever last year and also should have a drive. Servia, Wilson, Montagny - too many good drivers without a ride but we still have nearly theree months to go.

If full sponsorship can't be found for either Tracy or Servia, perhaps we might see them split the season in the 2nd KVRT car (with a 3-car entry for Indy).

If Tracy isn't in a car, I'm not going to even bother with Long beach this year, and I only live 20 minutes away.

Supposedly its getting closer according to completely unnamed sources. From Sporting News:

As most fans of Paul Tracy may know, he started to take up an effort to drive in the craftsman truck series; however, the "thrill" may be driving for Jimmy Vasser in a full time ride for the Indy cars. The latest information I'm told says there is a strong chance that money can be raised to get a team off and running. There are other factors that are in play to make this a reality.

I read on another forum, don't know what the source was, so this might not be true, but the poster said 24 KVRT employees were laid off. Which, if true, sounds a lot like "no one could get funds for the 5, so we're just going to get rid of it." Hopefully that's wrong. Both PT and Servia add to the sport, and seeing either (or both) on the sidelines (with other stars like RHR) is downright disappointing.

Apparently it was 18, but as for now just one car. I wonder if leaving Surfer's Paradise to the A1GP looks like such a good idea now. Guess this means they are out of the Robert Doornbos Sweepstakes.

"The bottom line is that we had to lay off 18 people and as of right now we're just running one car in the Indy Racing League," Vasser told speedtv.com. "It was a very difficult thing to do because we have a good family atmosphere built up here but were past the date on our budget to carry the compliment of people for a two-car team. Those are just the facts."

Guess this means they are out of the Robert Doornbos Sweepstakes.

Judging by the ING news this week, Robert Doornbos could well be out of the Robert Doornbos sweepstakes.

"Renault title sponsor ING has announced that it is to cut back on its sponsorship spending in Formula One as a result of its financial troubles.

The Dutch-based company says it is expecting to make a loss of 1 billion Euros for 2008 as a result of the worldwide financial crisis. In a bid to make up for the losses, it has announced a widespread cost cuts programme - which will include laying off 7000 people.

In a statement issued by the company on Monday, it confirmed that one of the measures to be implemented would be a reduction in its F1 sponsorship programme.

"ING will cut operating expenses by EUR 1 billion in 2009," said the statement. "The structural expense reduction will lead to annual savings of approximately EUR 1.1 billion from 2010 onwards. Of the cutback, 35% will come from a reduction of the workforce by approximately 7000 full-time positions in 2009.

"The remainder of the expense reduction comes from decreasing costs for our head office, marketing, the Formula One program, consultancy, third-party staff and the renegotiating of certain contracts with IT-vendors. Of the total expense reduction, EUR 650 million will be realized in Banking and EUR 350 million in Insurance."

As well as being title sponsor of Renault, ING has also paid for trackside advertising and was the official race sponsor for last year's Australian, Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix.

This year, the company is to sponsor the races in Australia, Belgium, Hungary and Turkey.

Jan Hommen, Chairman and CEO-designate of ING, said about ING's future plans: "Naturally, I am disappointed with our results in this extremely tough environment. With the continuing challenging outlook, we feel it is important to take additional action to decrease our risks and expenses.

"We sincerely regret the impact that some of the measures we are announcing today will have on our colleagues, but these steps are essential to adapt our organization to the new business environment."

Last year he said in Long Beach he would like to start the Indy 500 in 2009 but I don't see it happening now.
