Stars & Cars, Mercedes' traditional end of season motorsport party traditionally used to stage a demo of its top works teams in international motorsport around the perimeter of its Stuttgart base and also featured a Penske Mercedes versus. McLaren Mercedes pitstop race demo...
Ive been trying to find any pics of the Penske-Merc and the McLaren-Merc running side by side as it were or partaking in the pitstop competition.....yet to no avail!
Are there any pics out there that anyone is aware of at all?
Thanks in advance to anyone able to help
Many thanks

Giuseppe, Penske hasn't used a MB motor in Indy Car for quite a few years. Isn't this party about the new MB products and/or race cars? Penske is now affiliated with Porsche in ALMS and Honda in Indy Car. I suspect that might have a lot to do with it.

I'd assume he's looking for an old photo.
I did a google search yesterday wih many different word combinations, and I didn't find a thing.

If I can find my old AUTOSPORT issues I remember a pic of Little Al and one of the McLaren drivers during the pitstop competition. The McLaren team won, though they did have twice as many pitstop personnel than Penske.

Thanks for all your help guys.
I am of course aware that Penske no longer use MB engines in Indycar and indeed it was historic images I was looking for - just seems there arent too many about on the net thats all.....
Thanks again anyhow

Agree with Civic
Also I'm pretty sure they would've featured in the Star&Cars magazine they did around that time.
I do remember flicking through an issue at Ilmor when I did work experience there many moons ago.

Giuseppe,
Since I'm off this week I thought I'd do at least one constructive thing. Trying to find the photos you mentioned seemed like a good "project". I've searched the web and through two old hard drives. Nothing. Nada. Niente.
Sorry. But good luck.

I found a pic from the 1996 event in a November 1996 AUTOSPORT but it's just a pic of Mika in a Marlboro-McLaren during the pitstop competition with a blurb on how they beat Penske. Most likely the pic I remember is in a November or December 1997 issue of AUTOSPORT. I remember that the McLaren was already in West livery. The two cars weren't side by side though. It was Little Al in a pitbox ahead of the McLaren (don't remember who drove it) and thus, closer to the camera.

The first Penske Mercedes was the pushrod engine developed by Ilmor (with Chevrolet money?) It used a loophole by to create a more powerful engine to win the Indy 500 in '94 with an inferior chassis.
i think Ilmors were badged as Chevrolet until 1995 when they were badged as Mercedes. They were designed and made in England not Germany.
