View Full Version : Wyedean Rally 2009

Well the first big event of 2009 will be along soon enough (7th February) and it should be a cracker of an event once more. Hopefully there will be an entry like last years.
Rumoured entries at the moment are
Marcus Dodd, Hugh Hunter, Will Nicholls, Steve Simpson, Michael O'Brien, Damian Cole, Peter Egerton

Usually make the effort for this one, will be hoping for snow like in '07, that was an exciting rally, although will be forever marred by tragic events.

NO SNOW!!! SNOW IS CRAP!!!
MrJan
21st December 2008, 21:46
Snow is crap for the top boys but it makes much more of the field exciting. Rarely have I found the lower runners in the 1400s that interesting but it was awesome when it snowed because you never knew what was going to happen. I still rate that day as one of the best rallies of my life purely because there was so much opportunity for cars to be exciting.

Depends how much snow you get really a light covering can make things interesting but it was deep where i was in Serridge and most of the top crews were struggling to get the power down which was a pity.
One of my favourite Wyedean's has to be 2006. Walked quite a way to a hairpin right in Speech House. Things started off pretty calm then a car in the 1400s went off somewhere in the stage and delayed it for a good hour or so and was getting a bit bored. But the stage got going again and it was the turn of the top crews and the start of chaos :D .
First up Dorian Rees in the Octavia WRC and stalls on the hairpin. Next Steve Perez and he was two fast and went off getting beached eventually geting going again. Then came Hugh Hunter in his then yellow Escort who was miles two fast and had a overshoot going straight through the wooden gate of the road straight ahead where a photographer had parked his Impreza  which got the owner a bit worried so he moved it further down.
This was followed by several smaller overshoots then an Impreza came flying past the hairpin must have been doing about 90mph past the hairpin and straight down the road ahead narrowly missing the photographers car it was mad. It certainly got the photographer angry.
It didnt stop there an Evo was following an Escort Cosworth the Escort went straight on at the hairpin and the Evo subsequently followed :D In all about 30 cars got it wrong.
Went to the same place this year and there were no off's.

That's because the braking point was icy.
Best Wyedean was in 2004. Massive crowds and the best entry list the event has had in modern times!!
Oh and forgot to add, Roger Duckworth might be out too

I expect Burton will be there, hopefully Perez will be out too to debut his 07 Focus and give it a run before the Sunseeker, or maybe a blast in the Stratos?

07 was the most interesting rally I have ever done, by far. We were running last 1400 in a F1000 205, and it was the drivers 1st ever rally. We kept on the road, despite some very close shaves with the FC signs. And we didn't finish last.
Will be out this year in a 1.4 Lupo in Rally First. Dont mind if it snows or not.

Just looked at the entry list and car 111 is a lancer WRC, would that be the last Evo WRC before they pulled out?
And also I notice mr Burton isnt on the list yet, I take it he is entering as its a round of the BTRDA?

Well that was unfortunately a boring days rallying. Watched at 2 spots in Serridge which we've seen before and have both been exciting but nothin really of not this time. 1400s were mostly depressingly slow through the first run and most people seemed to be taking it very steady in comparison to the similar conditions 2 years ago. Also found it annoying that we could only really watch at 2 stages, in previous years we've solidly managed 3 and sometimes attempted 4, but then at £5 it's still good value stuff.
Still you can't win 'em all and it's on to the next one. Videos and photos uploading to flickr at the moment, will post them here when it's done, mind you my photography has dropped from 'vaguely amateur' to 'is it the big button on the top?' in the off season

Mr Jan Yeo, how was it getting to the rally, with all the bad weather weve had?
Fairly easy really. I live right by the A30 so straight onto gritted roads. The M5 was slow at times because it was down to 1 lane in some places but even then you could occassionally overtake as long as you picked your spot carefully. But then the weather also meant that less people were on the roads and you could do a steady 56 mph whenever you were stuck behind a lorry and usual sort of speeds when it was clear.
Left at about 7 and got to Chepstow around half eight so a pretty normal run up time wise. Thankfully I wasn't driving though as you needed to be concentrating a lot.

It was a tough one - I think they sent the ploughs in the day before to clear the stages, but then overnight it froze. In an ideal world they should probably left the snow on, or cleared it as late as possible, but great thanks to all for taking the decision to run the event.
I went to Speech House in the morning, and the 1400's were really struggling, most were on the wrong tyres, and were just polishing the surface, and making it worse. However the difference when Burton and Elsmore came through was unbelievable.
In the afternoon, went to Serridge, a lot better. Only problem was trying to get out the car park - all churned up - took about 10 mins to get out!!
