Whats your favorite or most insperational quote from Ari, one of mine from the Forum of the 2008 McRae Stages...

"life is incredible and at the same time you have to look forward, you must always let so much go on, we must be optimistic but we mustn’t forget what happened yesterday because what happened yesterday if we don’t build on it and we wont know where to go and that’s why were here.”

I didn't realise Ari was famous for quotes but if he had one that stuck down this neck of the woods it was in 1977 after tipping his RS1800 on it's side for about the 4th time ... "Oh, what a silly car!"

Dont think he that famous for quotes myself its just what he says in speeches is such a insperation and he talks so much sense.

And he keep on shooting those similar quotes even novadays. No matter what you ask from Ari, it's always the same.

Once I asked him about a rally where he went off, if he still remember the moment and place, where we the spectators helped him from the ditch, Ari said, I'm not sure, because in Finland there is not many ditches where I have not been stuck in.

That’s the words of a politician as Ari is nowadays. Lots of words saying nothing. This doesn’t mean that I don’t respect his achievements. He was a hell of a driver always giving all the time a full “boost”, and even little more.

Agree about the achievments, before the accident he was nice and ok, after he was a total wreck and survived that too, nowdays he is a fullbody dick.

Talking about the MCD Black Escort he drove in British championship in 82 I think.

" It was a car we rallied in 82, and I don't think we ever really won anything but we were very very fast in that car".

On accidents - "I can't even remember, maybe there have been too many of them I can't remember some so well".

That's pretty rough. I posted on these forums a couple of years back asking how to get in touch with the man as I wanted him to sign a famous photo.

Fast-forward a little bit and the dude emailed me back within a few hours, and was more than happy to sign up a photo, I included a copy for him also and from that time on he actually kept in touch with me sending a few emails from time to time.

Couldn't have been a nicer person, genuinely in my opinion.

Everyone will of course have different opinions on others although this is my personal experience with Ari....while he was in behind the desk not the dashboard...

Well I've got two that I've always loved from interviews he's given over the years...

The first one:

Q: Ari, what is the secret to Finnish drivers being so quick?
Ari: I think we all have the same problem, empty head and heavy right foot!

The second one:

Q: Any regrets over your career?
Ari: Yes, looking back now, I think that maybe, every now and again, I should have braked a little earlier.

:D

I was talking about the civil vatanen, not the rally one, and im referring to his sons Kim Vatanens book Helvetin Saari (Hell Island) and about his way to use his political position to get advantage in land issues.
But it's sure nice he answered your mail.

I remeber a qute from the late Colin McRae, after he and Vatanen both got stuck with their Nissans in the desert during the Dakar rally. Something like:
"We talke a lot about politics and peace in the world. Ari was speaking most of the time"
With a wink to Ari having one of his speeches. :)

Ahhh, sorry mate. Now I see. Maybe should have read the post a couple of times :)

Yeah it was super nice of him to reply and he was really nice about it, he acted exactly how any fan would want their driver to react when approached. Brilliant.

Jan was a serieus contender for the overal win on the 1988 Dakar. He scared the hell out of many cardriver in that rally :) . I also would love to hear the conversation afterwards between Ari and Jan.

I guess it was very hard to understand Jan mumbling (without his teeth, as usual...) and it was liable to corrupt the young what Ari had to say... ;)

Heard and read him saying a couple of times that "speed doesn't know your age & neither a rally car does" about his 2nd and eventual 3rd position, after Ford team orders in Safari 98.

He had a similar quote in 2003 after his impressive 11th in Finland when he was saying hello to the fans with his left hand (206 WRC), still, he crushed a works driver. Schwarz Hyundaï Accent WRC, though. :s tare:

Maybe the Hunadi did know the drivers age. The Peugeot's suspecion was better prepared for the load of the inboard expercience while the Hyundai's suspencion could not carry Schwarz's experience. :)

A quote not by Vatanen but by his co-driver Terry Harryman on the 1982 Manx.

Barrie Hinchliffe:
"When did you know the accident was starting to happen."

Harryman wryly replies:
"Scrutineering"
