View Full Version : Jerez Testing

Here are today's results (according to Pitpass):

http://www.profacil.net/McLaren/Jerez0602.gif

Different track, different layout and eleven cars within the same second.

Of course it was raining, in other case they should be 4 seconds faster. It's a pity in a year were testing has been limited so much, most it's gonna be on wet conditions, for later facing a mostly dry championship.

You're right, I've just watched on TV.

So, why so slow times? Last year times were over 4 seconds faster.

Fantastic to see Williams do so well, just 4 hundreths slower than a McLaren, very impressive.

The tyres are much harder this year and faster times can be set when its colder.

Tmes are slower this year with because of the more conservative tyres.

That McLaren really seems to be running like a metronome this year. Have they pulled off the impossible and made a reliable car?

Maybe it's a matter of which hands are on the wheel.

The times seem to be quite consistent with just over 2 seconds separating everyone. I would suspect the tires to be the main cause in the slow times, but we can't totally discount the rev-limited engines either.

Don't expect fireworks from redbull at this test either. An aussie mag today has reported that adrien newey isn't expecting the definitive aero package to be on the car untill bahrain, and even then the new package is likely to miss the first couple of days of the 10 day test.

Mark webber also confirmed my suspisions in the same mag that they where just doing shakedown work at the last test, hence the slow times. Although i guess he would say that... meh i dunno but im gonna reserve judgement untill we see the final specification of the car in bahrain

The times are very close, but one gets the impression that McLaren have achieved their times with much greater ease and consistency than most of the others. They have also racked up plenty of mileage.

Williams have been a pleasant surprise so far. The chassis/engine combination looks to be OK.

McLaren and Ferrari seem to be the pace-setters. There is though, the prospect of real competition this year.

I have also noticed that the lap-times are extremly close - it's usual to see like 12 drivers within one second. I haven't checked, but has the same tendency been usual in previous years at winter tests as well? Or if not, then how possible is it that we are going to see the closest (in terms of lap times, not points!) championship of all times? Has the new engine rule really been the tool to close the gaps? If all the teams are going to be within 2 seconds (and why not, if Spyker has a decent car and SA/STR will use their #1 team chassises), it will be the record of all times. In the past all the teams have been at best within 3 seconds on a single lap.

from memory pre-season testing times are generally closer then they end up being at the actual races. The only exception is that sometimes teams will put in a bolter lap to make them look rediculously fast, and others will play silly buggers and make everyone think they are off the pace when they are actually not.

Generally teams which do bolter laps actually turn out to be dissapointingly slow at the first GP, while teams who go slow can SOMETIMES be very fast at the first GP. But you have to remember that everyone is out there doing their own thing. On one day a certain team may be playing with race distance setups, while a different teams is working on qualifying and new tyre pace, therefore their times are far apart even if in reality they are closely matched

Times are very close, indeed, but times don't win races. Driver talent and experience and car reliability will determine the race winner rather than who is 0.5 seconds faster or slower in testing.

Just something that struck me seeing this is how difficult it is to judge anything from winter testing.

The two drivers being that close in time could mean:
1) the car is quick and consistent for both drivers - good
2) the drivers were running different programmes but the changes make little difference to lap speed - bad :dozey:

I guess there's not enough information to reduce to those two possibilities. The fact that two cars/drivers had almost the same best lap over a race distance tells you very very little about how things went. Over the whole distance the difference between both could be a minute or even more, and we wouldn't know from just looking at the best laps.

I really struggle to see why testing is not reported in a more comprehensive way (legth of stints, average lap time, etc., etc.) :s

I agree with both of you!!!

On the spanish media they usually provide that information, but only about Alonso. They go to the testing track and can see how manny laps is Fernando doing, and if the fastest time is set at the begining, or at the end, of a long, or short, stint.

If we could have that information about everydriver, and coming from the team, instead of a biased journalist, could be very interesting for us, and useful to draw some conclusiona from winter testing.

But it's not only about the teams! The regular reporter writes about a test session as if it was a qualifying session: "driver X went back to the track, but was unable to beat Y's previous time". They make a fool of themselves, and they make no service to anybody :mark:

If test times say almost nothing, partial test times (morning session times) say even less.

How can anyone compare (this is just an exaple) Kimi's times, after driving 45 laps, with Alonso's ones, after driving only 9 laps.

And speaking of Telecinco, they showed today an interview to Fernando, where he said things like:

"Our car is fast, but is still not ready to win, and everyday we've less time".

"What I like the best from my car is its livery".

"Up till now, Ferrari is the reference to beat".

"Renault will start very well, but will be worst later, as always".

"Hondas don't look so strong as the say".

"BMW is showing to be the great surprise".
