A steward os dead hitted by a car at rally legend. What a tragedy.
Rally is stopped and finished
Edit: we can't understand the real number of victims, that could be more than one. There are also wounded.

Too bad! But it was just a matter of time there, must be the event with the worst safety in whole Europe.

R.I.P...
+1, Most people among us here should know the chances of this happening were quite big. Almost all zones that should normally be forbidden areas were packed with people... This will always happen on events with a lot of spectators and organizers who don't take their responsibility... Let's not forget there are more events like this (for example Condroz in Belgium, next month).

I sadly agree with you. It's enough watching at some videos on youtube to understand that.
I saw the video of the crash. The car went straight in the wet road in a corner after a crest (unbelievable that there were people at such spot, just unbelievable).

Yeah just in the airport heading back from the rally. Really sad. Great event - first time for me attending this year. It feels to me that with the popularity now it is out-growing the rally in terms of infrastructure, crowd control, parking, safety etc.
I guess you only need to look at the YouTube videos to see how the attendance is growing year on year. I was thinking to myself there will eventually come a tipping point where it changes. Maybe this is it. It's so often the way with a fatality.

Have watched footage of this event over the years on YouTube; and whilst it looks a great event (and I wish we had something similar in the UK) some of the spectator areas are not great; one always felt it was only a matter of time before something happened.
Organisers of all events will soon be forced into 'spectator zones' -and no admittance anywhere else; as this can't keep happening.

Jiří Jírovec who drove Corolla WRC there described the place on ewrc forum. He said he was on half 6th gear before the braking to this critical junction. He said it was necessary to start braking already before the crest because just behind it there were two pedestrian crossings and other traffic signs on the road painted with usual very slippery paint.

Really nice images thanks for sharing. Guess it was a challenge with the weather alone besides anything else. Really would love to visit this event having done Eifel a few times now but guess will need to see what the fall out from the incident will be first.
Cheers
Chris
Thanks Chris. Yeah it was definitely a wet one. Only seemed to rain when we were on the stages too which was a bit annoying. But I've told myself if I can get through GB last year then I can get through any wet rally.
It will be interesting to see what, if anything, changes following the incident but I'd definitely recommend it. On the Saturday we were able to park up at service and walk to two different stages. It's super compact and the drivers/cars are very accessible. If you end up looking at going and need any advice just give me a shout.

Something very very ashaming is going on in Italy after tragic events at Rally Legend. And it's good you will know what I am talking about.
Soon after a person died in the accident at Rally Legend, the organizers gave to the press a communication stating that The driver Bonaso and codriver Palazzi were in the wrong for the accident. Because they were too fast.
Since we are talking about an "important" organization and a normal driver who drive for fun... A lot of TVs, journals and media reported the events stating the same as the communication of the organizers, including major magazines and TV Channels. And I have to say also some "VIP" who could have taken his mouth closed, like Miki Biasion who really disappointed me (an who said later that he has been misunderstood but still blaming the driver), and others.
Unfortunately, and this can be seen in a lot of videos and pictures, all those people involved in the crash were stupidly right after the straight before a lefthander. They were in the most dangerous position possible. In a wet street, after a crest!
In that spot there were also a TRACTOR used to move the hay bales.
Bonaso is now a devastated man, we can only imagine what he is going through... but it is not his fault, and he know.
At the moment he is THE ONLY ONE investigated for what happened.
It is a big shame but of course he is going to defend himself.
My friends at rally.it talked with his lawyer who is also a rally driver, you can read what he said here:
https://www.rally.it/2016/10/lavv-covi-dalla-parte-bonaso-dei-piloti-italiani
In Twitter and Facebook there is an hashtag that support Bonaso: #iostoconbonaso that means "I am with Bonaso".

We have been through similar shit here (although never was it the organization itself who blamed the driver). Especially after the tragic accident in Rallyshow Uherský Brod some years a go where the driver was a rich a laywer driving for fun or with Kopáček who was well known for having many crashes before. The media were tearing them apart. Politians, celebrities, many of them never attended any rally, joined the hunt as soon as they smelled the opportunity to raise their popularity. But it seems to be over. The police investigation and court standings so far brought quite reasonable decisions and now suddenly the very same media pretend that nothing happened and cover the sport like any other.

it's like big joke for an organizer to blame a driver for an accident.of course anyone who has(very) little knowledge of motorsport will never believe these kind of bullshit.By making such statements i understand that they address to the irrelevant to motorsport public.last but not least, i believe it is not moral to blame someone else for you incompetence( in this case to provide safety to the spectators, which is very crusial if you want to be considered a serious organizer.)

Jarek, you know damm well that if two top drivers are fighting against and one has Fiesta evo and other P208, the second one is without a chance.
Probbably you don't that Basso spun on the morning stage and than just control the gap to Ucci(read the interviews....).
Ucci can not fight even against GAS-powerd Fiesta (Cempedelli), the only luck is that Simone makes mistakes (yesterday broke the rim). same goes for Scandola....
But, this doesn't efect perfect drive of Basso, whos second half of the season was brilliant. Congrats....

Obviously he had a chance when he nearly won the title. You could say he was without a chance if he was 20 points behind but not 2.

Yes, he was (almost) without a chance. Why: because Basso scored in the 2nd half of the season 55,75 points, Andreucci on the other side "just" 40! If this is not a clear proof that Basso was on a charge, unbeatable, than I can not help you to understand this simple mathematics. All what was left to Paolo was waiting for technical troubles for Basso or retirement due to driver's error....
Ok, enough of "crying"...what worries me (this should be addressed to R5 topic) is year 2017.... All PSA drivers are going to be totaly uncompetitive.

It was one of the most exciting championships around Europe. Congrats to Basso and also to Andreucci for this fantastic fight. Ucci underperformed a bit on gravel rallies, but overall he did another remarkable season and Peugeot Italia managed to prove (again) that a well prepared 208 can be a title contender. Hope they’ll be there next year.

Well deserved win from Basso.
We interviewed him at the end of the rally and it was clear he didn't realize it yet. But you can clearly tell that he was an happy man.
He told us that it has been a very struggling year, it started with some issues but then went better. At this last rallys he wanted to win day1 in order to take it more easy on day2. He won on saturday and today he managed it right behind Ucci. He told us also that he had a spin at the beginning but of course he didn't care about the rally just to stay close to Paolo and bring it home.
He succeed.
As an Ucci fan of course I would have liked to see him winning but really, I'm happy for "Giando". He deserved to be in a more performing car after two years with the "heavy" GPL Fiesta...
Ucci also criticized the new point scoring system (he won the same amount of rally of last year... but I think it is not the right time to do it, even if he congratulated with Basso.)
Anyway I fear Ucci will never win 10 championship with that car... Let's see what will happen next year. For now Cheers to Basso. Again well deserved win.

Yes, it will be very hard for Peugeot bit it's not something that concern me. It is motorsport. Ucci had his "advantaged" years in his 208 now he is on the other side. It's normal. For me, he remains storically the best. But yes I don't think he has chances with that car.

They were testing new parts for much of September and October, also the Evo cars got new engine mapping not long ago. On the other hand, there were rumors that with the C3 R5 arriving in 2018, there will be no Peugeot sister to that car...

Well, I'm absolutely not happy for him. Staying with Peugeot means just one thing-he can forget 10th title! Both Fabia and Fiesta (we have to wait for I20 R5) are much faster cars.

Well, I'm absolutely not happy for him. Staying with Peugeot means just one thing-he can forget 10th title! Both Fabia and Fiesta (we have to wait for I20 R5) are much faster cars.

Unfortunately this year Italian championship is not shaping as thrilling as it has been latest years.
Scandola didn't found an agreement with Skoda, Basso also seems he's not going to participate.
If so, Ucci is going to win it in reverse but will not be that great for spectators.
Also nobody have news from Campedelli, whom was rumored getting the place of Scandola at Skoda, but nothing official as been decided yet, and Ciocco is withing a month.

Italy Admits Under-Age Rally Drivers
Revised regulations from the Italian federation will permit foreign rally drivers under the age of 18 to compete in their country.
Conditions are that the driver must produce the written consent of both parents, the driver must pass successfully a driving test at the Federal School, the codriver must be over 18 and holder of a a driving license and international license, and the codriver must drive the road sections, immediately after leaving the time control zone.
During the reconnaissance the juvenile driver may be transported in the car as a third person but not drive the car.
Following the permission granted by his native Finnish federation to allow 16 year old Kalle Rovanpera to compete in his own country, Rovanpera has recently been testing in Italy on tarmac and gravel, with different R5 specification cars, in the hope that Italian federation officials would permit him to compete in their country as well.
Interesting to note that both Jari-Matti Latvala and Mikko Hirvonen both spent time competing on small events in Italy in their early days, albeit not so young as Rovanpera will be.

Pirelli backs Rovanpera for Italian Rally Championship
Written by Team Release on 10 March 2017.
Kalle Rovanpera, the teenage rally sensation from Finland who has already won a national championship aged just 16, will drive for Peugeot Italia as team mate to Paolo Andreucci on the Italian Rally Championship, with backing from Pirelli.
Rovanpera’s first confirmed outings are Rally Il Ciocco from March 17-19 and Rallye Sanremo from March 30-April 2.
“I’m very grateful to Pirelli for helping to make this amazing opportunity possible,” said Rovanpera.
“I really want to build up my experience on asphalt because most of my rallies so far have been held on gravel. With Paolo as my team mate and support from Pirelli, I also have the best possible teachers when it comes to driving on sealed surfaces. For me, this programme is all about learning: I’m not looking at the results.”
Peugeot Italia communications director Carlo Leoni added: “We’re delighted that Kalle has chosen the 208 T16 and Pirelli: the most competitive car and tyres on the Italian Rally Championship. Working alongside Paolo and taking part in the championship will mark an important chapter in Kalle’s professional growth.”
Rovanpera has starred on Italian asphalt twice before with Pirelli. Last year he took part in the Monza Rally Show and also in the Bettega Memorial at the Bologna Motor Show, where he nearly won on his World Rally Car debut.
Pirelli’s rally activity manager Terenzio Testoni commented: “At Pirelli we firmly believe in supporting champions of the future, so we are delighted to offer Kalle this unprecedented opportunity. The combination of our knowledge, alongside that of Paolo and Peugeot Italia, should help Kalle take big steps towards realising his phenomenal potential.”
Rovanpera has already tested the Peugeot 208 T16 R5 on asphalt, running on Pirelli’s RK dry tyres and RW Cinturato rain tyres. He will have one further test on similar Tuscan hill roads to those used for the Rally Il Ciocco: round one of the Italian championship.
On account of his age, co-driver Risto Pietilainen will drive the road sections, with Rovanpera taking over for the stages.

Biggest surprise for me-apart that old fox managed to win 1.day after "fiasco" on yesterday's super special-Andolfi leading 2WD class! Didn't we predict that Fiat 124 will have no chance against R2, not to mention R3.....obviousley a good work by Abarth team (and Andolfi's performance too).

IMHO Abarth 124 could be a good car for one-make cups but otherwise I don't expect anything ground braking from it.
No, I haven't claimed it to have no chance against R2 or any other similar bullshit.
PS I thought that the car would be a lot faster than it actually is. 23 seconds ahead of R2 after one hour of driving is for sure nothing to celebrate.

That is true. Give young Kalle few tarmac rallyes, let say in the summer we will be able to make some conclusions. Indeed with Ucci&Co the team around Kalle has chosen one of the hardest champions in EU; which is good for Kalle's developement.

I agree. Give him time. Don't forget, that he is so young, that most of kids just dreaming about driving in rally at that age. Nobody is perfect from beginning. Talent is how fast someone can improve, and Kalle showed us, that he is fast learner. And don't get me wrong, but I'm bit happy about Kalle's crash - lets face it Baltics roads are quite forgiving, and Kalle still does silly mistakes, but again, he's just a kid. Unfortunates like this could help him improve his driving style. And he needs more rallies when he finishes not in the 1st spot, with guy better knowing roads than Kalle or better cars; competition and challenges are best combination for improvement.

Nucita spun in front of me yesterday:

Fabio Andolfi was next to me spectating in another stage. He is a nice guy, he was talking about what to improve in the 124 Abarth and about spectators throwing snow in the stage at Montecarlo.
Really feel for Ucci and Scandola, mechanical failure are always the worse. A shame that Peugeot, the only official manufacturer of the championship is still not able to deliver a reliable car after all these years.
At the same time I'm very happy for Simone Campedelli and Pietro Ometto who really deserve their first win at CIR. Being so close to Andreucci that was born in those street is a proof of how much these guys are the one to watch.
I'm very sorry to have miss the chance to watch Kalle at full speed. He has a long way to go on tarmac but it was his first event on this surface, against driver who drove in those streets for decades. Still I'd rate this debut very high.
Now we just have to see how the learning curve will develop, if it will be steady or he will learn quick to master this new surface.
My GF still loves me after having walked 10km to reach stages, risked our life leaving one stage (we were going away from the stage after one car passed and there were soon another one we didn't hear and we were in the street, likely we had a place to go), and Nucita spun putting his nose not far from where we were. :D
Overall classification taking into account the stupid and overcomplex point system of CIR
Campedelli 16,5
Perico 11
Andreucci 7,5
Chentre 6,0
Scandola 4,0
Rusce 3,5
Ferrarotti 3,0
Nucita 1,5

It's tricky to compare Barum and Italian events.. It's both asphalt but hugely different. For being fast on Barum You don't need that much of proper asphalt driving techniques. You mainly need to have very well set up suspension and some balls. On the contrary on Sanremo You need to have very precise pacenotes, to keep perfect tarmac lines and to master brake usage management

Paddon is a world class driver.Even if he is not tarmac specialist i think his driving skills are better than ucci's,scandola's etc.Italians have just the advantage of the road knowledge .
You're not taking into account severl aspect:
1) Ucci, Scandola etc drive Sanremo streets every year for decades. Even if you are a worse driver that is a huge advantage
2) Ucci, Scandola etc showed top speed at WRC2 leading rally sardinia in 2015 and 2016 until technical problems, so they can count to a solid basis of speed that is not easy to find elsewhere.
3) Ucci, Scandola etc never had occasion to prove themself with the best in an international level.
4) Ucci was ahaed of Mikkelsen in Sanremo during IRC some years ago (correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't follow rallies back then, I'm relying on what I heard afterwards).
5) Ucci, Scandola etc drives R5 everytime while for Paddon is the first time after many years (of course he's driving beasts now that are harder to drive but it's still a different car and I guess that will cost him somehow)
6) Paddon wants mileage in tarmac with Seb at his side, he will not risk everything, Ucci, Scandola etc have a championship to win.
7) Paddon is driving with a barely new codriver, it's not the same as having the usual one.
For these reason I don't think Paddon will win the event or be at TOP pace this weekend. Close to them yes, but not better.
Let's see.

Famous San ROmolo corner!
Paddon and Ucci very similar, Scandola took the most of the street width, Rovanpera too much finnish :), he has a lot of work to do on tarmac.

Paddon from Facebook:
Sitting 3rd after the first loop - amazing stages to drive and enjoying a lot. The locals are no slouches and the speed up the front is very hot. Now we look forward to some night stages tonight

After the checks carried out at the end of ps.4, it was disqualified Danilo Ameglio for lack of the underwear. Also confirmed for the same reason, disqualification for Toto Riolo. Of course, the suspension affects the entire event, and then can not start tomorrow for the second stage
