Sebastian Vettel today got his first podium, by finishing on the top step.

Who was the last driver to get their first podium by winning? (Baghetti?)

I think it has to be Baghetti. Of course, it ought to have been Jacques Villeneuve.

EDIT — Now I say that, I'm sure there's someone I've missed since Baghetti. Excellent question.

The ones I can think of after Baghetti:

Emerson Fittipaldi at the US GP in 1970.

Vittorio Brambilla's first and only podium was his win in the rain in Austria in 1975.

Alan Jones' first win, also at the Österreichring, in 1977 was also his first podium.

There may have been others, but I'm too tired to do some research ;)

Andretti took pole in his very first rookie F1 race in 68 and may well have won it except for some mechanical issues (and no, JV was NOT the first to do it since the later 1940's--a common mistake)

Then about couple of year later, he won his first race in a ferrari (71?) and as I recall, that was his first "podium", as in the sporadic races that he did in F1 before then (which was like may be five or six over several years), I think he retired. Although in those days, sometimes there was a podium and sometimes there was not.....

Emilio Giuseppe "Nino" Farina

Baghetti is one of only three drivers to have won his first World Championship race, the other two being Nino Farina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nino_Farina), who won the first World Championship race (the 1950 British Grand Prix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_British_Grand_Prix)) and Johnnie Parsons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Parsons), who won the 1950 Indianapolis 500 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_Indianapolis_500) (the Indianapolis 500 was part of the World Championship from 1950 to 1960).

1996 - 2006: Formula 1
The season began with Giancarlo still competing in the ITC, where he scored five podium
finishes. However, in parallel he completed several tests for Ferrari (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1672/369/), and competed in 8 of the
season’s Grands Prix for Minardi (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1681/369/). From 1997, he was a full-time F1 driver, and since then has
almost never been out of the top ten in the championship. A determined driver known for his
finesse, Giancarlo has developed his technical understanding of the sport in several teams. He
has competed under the colours of Minardi (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1681/369/), Jordan (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1675/369/) and Benetton (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1669/369/) before joining the Renault (http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/1684/369/) F1
Team in 2005. That first season brought one victory, in Australia, and another followed in
Malaysia in 2006, during the Italian’s best F1 season to date. He finished fourth in the world
championship, and his points tally helped ensure the team secured its ‘double double’ of world
titles. The Italian is hungry to succeed in 2007.

google

the only F1 driver to have won a race without having stood atop the podium. ... 2003 brought Giancarlo his first win at a very wet Brazilian Grand Prix, ... ??

If you just count winning a race without standing on top of the Podium, Massa last weekend in Spa would have to be in that list (assuming Hamilton's penalty isn't reversed). I'm guessing there would be a few others.

I think it could be Jean-Pierre Jabouille; he won two races but his next best finish was a fourth place.

Jones it is then, thanks for the info. It was a bit hard to research.

No, Jean-Pierre Jabouille's first win was in 1979 - ahead of the battling Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve. Surely this was the most recent?

Yes, you are right - Jabouille escaped my memory, but it is indeed as you say - his only two podiums were his two wins in France 1979 and Austria 1980. I am pretty sure there was no-one after that.

how about Olivier Panis at monaco

Panis had two previous podium finishes (2nd in Adelaide 1995 and Hockenheim 1994).

No. That was his first win, but not his first podium.
