With a driver like Jasper VdH he will be able to do top 5 I think. Not all IRC drivers are top, so with some luch and skill of him he should be able to do it.

Well he finished 7th on Ypres last year, but he was 5 minutes off the pace. Don't recall what his stage times were like though.

Jasper VdH on his chances:

In english and short:
- On a track of 55secs with Evo 9, he is 1.5secs faster with EvoX
- EvoX has super torque of 610 Nm
- How the car is right now (while he is testing it) he could have won Condroz this year
- On certain rally's they will be able to match S2000 speed, he thinks

VW Belgia or Skoda Belgia - it is all VAG, same family !

But depending on what VW are doing on rally, Fabia has more development behind it. Less work on RGRS !

They are there to make money, and they will have a better product in a Fabia !

Sad, since I like the Polo, but it is hard facts !

To me, the Fabia looks like a baby world rally car, more than the other S2000s. Of course, there are many variables which we can't tell till we see the stage times once they are competing for real, but it looks promising :)

It would be great if Toni could scrape together a budget for the year. I think the IRC would be all the better for having more top-line drivers. Toni could also raise his stock in the driver market with a good year in the IRC, plus the knowledge of the S2000 platform it will bring.

If there’s a lot of snow it will absorb some of the sound. It sounds more “softly”.

There was some 10-20 cm on the fields around and only few trees. But as far as I know the test car was louder than FIA accept and that they had to use different exhaust for homologation and therefore I think it wasn't snow only ;)

This was in Autosport yesterday so Guy must have had talks with both. It will be interesting to see the pace of the Proton when it gets going. I suppose it will all come down to money.

The guys on the fringes of the WRC realise that this year they are better off going to the IRC when looking ahead to 2010. That has to bode well for the IRC this year.

There is for sure a chance to add one - two - three events, there is already a sign they would enter Scotland. I wonder, why they don't speak about Spain - it's a huge market for Skoda - if you just look at the taxis in Madrid or Barcelona - it's the second most popular brand behind Seat.

As it is a manufacture that registers (and not the team or driver itself), it is a big support to the clients of the manufacture. It makes it easier for the clients to find sponsors (because of the tv coverage) and for the manufacture, if the clients are fast enough, they get into the standings.

The only con is the money of course, it costs money.

Hold your horses Tom, we are still far away of an almost complete program in IRC for Duval or RGRS. There are still a lot of "if"s in the article and they are just testing today in Amel (base that they use since several years) to see what Francois thinks of the Polo. Rene George wants to keep running with the Polo's and want to try to get also a factory Skoda, but nothing is decided about that. He asked for help at Belgian importer but with the actual crisis it is far from certain that they will do something to help RGRS.
Let's wait a little longer before we can actually say that Duval will do one or more rammy's in IRC. ;)
Rene George also said that in South-Africa they are now developing new model of Polo in S2000. :)

I think Abarth need to consider dropping Alen or running three cars in 2009 if they want to mount a serious manufacturers championship challenge. Unfortunately Abarth do not have any really strong privateers to rely upon like Peugeot do.

Prophetic words by myself in October last year? 2 rounds gone, 0 points scored.

I would like to see Alen stay, but with just Alen and Basso they do not stand a chance of taking the manufacturers title this year.

Hope to see more of Toni G, maybe Abarth can help with the bills?

news from the Vinho Madeira rally (30 july-1 august). Very intersting names on the wish list so far.

Madeira Wine Rally with names
The team of Club Sports Madeira, responsible for organizing the Madeira Wine Rally, has revealed some of the changes to be made on what will be the 50th edition of the event.
The biggest concerns recognitions will be mounted as a GPS system in cars for this purpose to control the number of passes by timed sections. In addition, letters will be delivered to the competitors which will record the occasions on which are the layout of the classifications.

They are also known some of the names that, in principle, discuss the first positions of the general classification. The Abarth team will align Giandomenico Basso and Luca Rossetti, the island will lead to the Kronos Nicolas Vouilloz, Freddy Loix, Kris Meek and Patrick Snijers Skoda will be represented by Jan Kopecky, Juho Haninen, Enrique Garcia Ojeda and Piero Longhi. Among those who compete in Europe there are Michal Solowow, Luca Betti, Corrado Fontana and Renato Travaglia.
Several are still pilots who may be in the seventh test of IRC. The organization has been contacted by Armindo Araújo, François Duval you want to be behind the wheel of an Abarth Punto S2000 and Patrick Sandell in his usual Skoda Fabia 2000.

Good move by MSD, Bengue is very underrated.

That clears GMac to do Donegal so.

Bengué is indeed a very talented driver on both surfaces(tarmac and gravel, although he didn't run on gravel since long time now)...but if the car isn't good, hre won't be able to do miracles at the wheels !!!

So let's hope the Corsa is a car that will allow Alex(and Caro his girlfriend/codriver)to express his talent :mark:

Anyhow, i think it is great that another brand (Opel) is coming to try and compete against the usual other manufacturers. Hope they can set some good results, no matter with what driver at the steering wheel. :D

I wonder whether Opel/MSD will register this year or just use their programme for testing purposes? I hope that they will so that we can see them on tv!

Opel will be sold to Canada, to Magna Internasjonal, so lets see what the new company chooses to do. All Canadians pls start the work to convince them that rally is a perfect way to improve the sales of cars !

We just escaped from seeing an Opel Corsa being a "dressed" Grande Punto(if Marchione had bought Opel) :p :

Andrea Mikkelsen has kicked out Alex Benguein the Hancook Opel Corsa S2000. Mikkelsen will now do Barum, Spain, Sanremo and Scotland

Mirek

I would not say he kicked Alex out cause MSD was searching for some driver for Barum already before they started negotiations with Mikkelsen. In my opinion there is some another reason why Bengue not...

Just befote Ypres MSD and Hancook said they would do the 5 rallies wit Bengue. Do you know why they left Bengue out ,or is it that he is too old and that a young gun like Mikkelsen is perfect for a long term project ?!

May be its because he went off several times on the first stage in Ypres

Cause there was engine oil on his tyres..

And on windscreen as well. It wasn't driver's mistake.

I don't know why Bengue doesn't continue.

Pinto

well if you have oil on the windscreen unless your blind it no excuse anyway Mikkelsen is more marketable and a damm good driver, and maybe the mchales one of the main backers in this car had a hand in it after all they would know Mikkelsen fairly well from his time in the irish tarmac championship

Mirek

Believe me there is no connection between Bengue's end and Mikkelsen's start. I'd say Mikkelsen was last minute solution.

Pinto

maybe so but i would say bengue incident got him the chop the backers would not be best pleased with it

What do we know about how quick the Corsa is, if compared to a 207 for instance ?

Not very I would say. Maybe Yacco weren't too pleased about their oil falling out of the Corsa's engine bay. I doubt Mikelssen is quicker than Bengue on asphalt, but maybe they can take their money to a different team? It would be nice to see Bengue in IRC.
