View Full Version : So I'm walking into the Whaanga Coast...

I think that this might be a bit of a specialised topic. In particular, I would like to hear from people who have been to the Whaanga Coast stage many times. Although I have been to many Rally NZs, generally I have tended to stay away from the Raglan stages for various reasons and have actually only been to the Whaanga Coast stage once.

Walking into the Whaanga Coast stage from Ruapuke road, is it worth walking for a while down towards the sea? Or is it best to walk back up the hill towards the start of the stage?

I just stayed at the spectator spot last year, which was nice, but I would like to have some variety this year. Driving into the stage isn't an option, though.

I shouldn't have too much trouble with marshals if I walk down the stage via the paddocks beside it, should I? In the past I have walked for quite some distance. I tend to encounter a very interesting variety of fences, too. I remember the most memorable one was a rickety barbed wire fence that obviously wasn't doing the job, as there was an electric fence about a meter away, running parallel to it. This was on Te Akau North not far from the junction with Woodleigh Rd.

it's worth your while to do a bit of walking, there are some awesome spectating spots. In 2005 after we DNF'd on the first run we had a great vantage point that we could see about 3km of the stage from.

That sounds great. How far in was that? It gets twisty and forested towards the end, I think, so you were more towards the middle?

Why not? Was there 2006 drove into the stage and found really nice place to be :)

If you're walking from Ruapuke Road, it's best to walk down towards the sea, there's nothing much the other way. I don't know how you will go with the marshals. I found the ones around Raglan last year were a bit tough regarding how far you were allowed to walk down some stages.

We were about 8km into the stage where we had a good view. Still in the farmland before it dropped down to the coast.
