this will be cool - just hope its a parade with the cars been pushed a little

i have to say i have been very disappointed with Gow and his 50th celebrations - the BTCC Masters race at Donington was fantastic and should surely be replecated

That's going to be a parade to use up a few picture spaces on my digital camera :D

I had hoped for a little more in the way of 50th anniversary celebrations but on the brightside, the series is looking pretty damn good in its current form anyway and surely thats the best legacy.

I'm hoping they will add Chris Hodgetts in a Sierra to that list as I know he's interested in driving. He certainly should be there being a former champion.

There are already two Sierra's in the parade.

Don't forget there will be other cars on display that will not be going round in the parade!

But the sierras are one of the most successful cars in the BTCC. Somone should get Thommo or Yvan in an Astra Coupe!

Looking forward to seeing the RS500s and the Cavalier in action. :D Hopefully get plenty of photos of the cars on display - proper racing cars, not these display models that get passed off as the real deal. :)

Will Andy Rouse be in the Labatts Sierra then? I thought Andy still had his own RS500 in 1990 ICS colourscheme?

Perhaps his RS500 is not mobile at the moment?

The Cavalier stopped with the championship winning season in 1995 (appart from a couple of privateers) so I assumed you mean the Astra for 2001?

Aye. That's the one.

I reckon any cars from 2001 could stand up now in an historic parade of touring cars and do justice to the point of such a parade. Remember we are talking about the era of Bennett, Leslie, Ferrier, Soper, Moen and Pyper.

The Cavalier was used by the works team from 1990 -1995
The Vectra came along between 1996 - 2000.
The Astra was used from 2001 - 2006.
And the Vectra came back in 2007.

There will be versions of the Astra on display, but not on track!

Thanks for the info btw. Most helpful. I also have your gallery as a visual refferece.

I reckon it is a damn shame that not more cars from the late 90's through to 2000 and 2001 are used in parades instead of being stuck on a stand somewhere.

Maybe because the years that most closely straddle the turn of the century aren't popularly considered to be far enough back for it to be considered "historic".

But fact is we are talking about cars in a parade that celebrates all that is good about the history of BTCC when all I as a motorsport fan hear about is the history of F1 that are no longer in production that were driven by drivers by-and-large no longer racing.

Maybe if we have a similar parade in 3-4 years time cars from 2000 and 2001 will be considered more elligible. :)

I know you only got into the BTCC around the time you're talking about, but aren't you curious to see what cars were like before that era?

I'd rather see the Super Tourers, the RS500s and the big bangers from the 60s and 70s than another Astra Coupe. :) I have only vague memories of ST cars in person, the rest of my recollections of that time comes from the TV, so I can't wait to see the Cavalier and Primera and any other ST cars that are appearing.

Like wise with me, I love seeing the old cavaliers and looking how things have changed, and I've always admired the look of the QuickFit? Mondeo. Hopefully there will be one there liveried up like it! Definately looking forward to this weekend.

Breakfast at Triple Eight Sunday morning!

I know you only got into the BTCC around the time you're talking about, but aren't you curious to see what cars were like before that era?

A bit. I mean not enough attention I reckon is paid to the history of touring cars; all we hear about is how great F1 drivers like Senna, Mansell, Piquet and legends like Fangio and Moss were and how stong teams like Ferrari and Lotus were. Never drivers and teams of touring cars (though understandable given the many chasms that divide F1 from Touring Cars) but that means I never see nearly enough of the past.

But when I read posts about the great races you guys used to see in the 1990's and the divers that took part...and I had to think hard about names...Andy Rouse, Chris Hodgetts and Jean-Christophe-Boullion (a team-mate of Jases' at Williams Renault in the Lagunas I am sure) I just feel sad I just cannot relate to them like you guys do. Yet I would gladly trade 2008 for 1998 or 2004 for 1994. It was the age when all the greats we talk about were in the prime. But maybe the "greats" are only "greats" because time has elapsed and they are no longer racing. Maybe they were seen more in the 90's as the driving talent they were.

I hope we get to see enough of the parade on Sunday.

I'd rather they called it a replica of Matt Neal's championship winning car, as it's the roadcar display model they used in 2005 and 2007.

I think that is why I am partly disinterested in the past. Past dissapointments. I once went to a small car show in a large tend behind a large supermarket on a grassy area on the coast of Sunderland at a place called Seaburn and saw what I have long thought to be a John Cleland Cavalier but when I posted a scanned copy of the pic someone told me it wasn't an actual Cavalier of John's that he has competed in. It was little more than a replica.

I'm sure we'd all like to see some pics if anyone's got any to show off?

Does anyone know if this was a one-off for Silverstone, or is it likely to be repeated at Brands?

I've got some. :) http://flickr.com/photos/iainw81/sets/72157607024958894/

I think it was a Silverstone/BRDC-organised event because of it being 60 and the BRDC being 80, so unlikely for Brands I'd say. But you never know.

tdb - the Cavalier was looking good. :)

Thanks Iain, given a bit more time it could have looked better.

It was great to see people genuinely pleased to see the car, it was amazing to meet so many people that knew as much about the cars as i do!
Derek was a star and as funny and entertaining as ever.

thought the whole thing was great, let's hope for a dry day and more time, next time someone sorts a similar thing.

I like to turn out cars a bit better than that, but i suppose it's the perfectionist in me.
it needs repainting really and the damaged indicator lens bugged me all day!
Oh and we didn't have any wets on 19 inch rims.

Being a wee bit of a Cleland Fan that really was the highlight of my day, haven't seen that car since I was a 14 year old at Knockhill in 1995! Thanks for bringing it along. :) What sort of condition was the car like when you first started work on it?
