I think we should welcome a great name from WRC history to the forums! Greetings, Fred.

Indeed we should!

I can't believe this age we live in!

If I could do that back in the 80's & 90's (I mean make contact with such people) it would blew my mind!

Even now it feels very nice!

So, welcome Fred!

I'm starting to get embarassed here! Thanks Kaps.

My co-driving days are long gone (Dakar 2001 was the last). Now I organise events and do some stewarding.

My hobby is rally history, mostly 1945 to 1972, but of course all the other stuff too so this is a good place to be.

Thanks again.

Hello.
I'm new here.
I'm searching for champions results previous 1970 (rallybase).
I have a few questions:
There was an international rally championship like 1970-1972?
Or continental/regional championships?
Do you have the champions (drivers/engines) for those previous years?
Thanks a lot.

As far as I know, the first ever international rally championship was in 1953 and up to 1967 this championships were held only for drivers, not constructors. The winners list list is as follows:

Now, back to my question, does anyone know the start and finish locations for the last five 2007 WRC rallies (Catalunya, Corse, Japan, Ireland & Wales)?
And for all 2008 WRC rallies?
Thank you!

For Wales Rally GB you can now ask the organiser - Mr Gallagher!
(It's Swansea). To explain the current name, "Rally GB" is the title the FIA require to be used but it is called "Wales Rally GB" not because it runs in Wales but because its sponsor is the Wales regional government.

Swansea? What year, '07 or '08?

I believe the '07 was Cardiff, and the Ireland '07 started at Stormont and finished at Mullaghmore. Is this right?

For those who like Rally history, you can visite the above link, where you can find hundreads of Raly Portugal pictures from decades ago until now. I am a user of that website, the portuguese Autosport and there are great rally fans there who upload their own pictures of the portuguese Rally history.

It worth the visit, because they identify places like Arganil or Fafe.

Which teams were "M2" teams in 2007 World rally Championship?
And did they have to contest at least 10 WRC rounds, like in 2006, or all of them, like M1 teams?

This question is a bit obscure, and I just ask it out of interest. In 1982, Timo Salonen is listed on Rallybase as taking part in, apparently, three different types of Datsun — the Violet GTS, Silvia Turbo and Violet GT. I believe the car in which he competed on the 1982 Portuguese Rally, given on Rallybase as a Violet GTS, was making its WRC debut on that event. The turbocharged car with which he tackled the 1000 Lakes (see it on video here — http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SbgwoVUxWYw) looks very similar to the model he drove in Portugal (video of it here — http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ALrrlhQfVfA — described as a 'Silvia Twin-Cam'). I have never seen a picture or film of his RAC car from '82, which Rallybase calls a Violet GT, the same designation as the Datsuns that Salonen had driven in '81, but which I assume wasn't the same model.

Basically, does anyone know why so many different model names were used — and why the turbo car apparently only made one appearance? I know the 240RS was in development for '83, but am still surprised that the turbo Silvia didn't at least have an outing on the '82 RAC — unless it did!

Salonen was in a Group 4 Violet GT on the 82 RAC, but Andy Dawson drove an "official" Silvia Turbo. I can't claim to be a Datsun/Nissan expert and I saw very little of the works cars on the 82 RAC, as I was running at the other end of the field.
Half the time Datsuns seemed to be called something different in the UK from elsewhere, which doesn't help. This was also a transition period. The 82 RAC was the last outing for "official" Datsuns run by Dawson's outfit - Bill Blydenstein took over in 83.
It was also a transition period for FIA Appendix J. The new Groups N/A/B had come in for 82 but old Gp2 and 4 (but not Gp1) cars were allowed to run on for a year (82) (to help keep entries up). At very short notice, the old Gps 2 and 4 were then allowed to run on for another year (83) but I think they were then restricted to non-FIA A (and B?) seeded drivers.
Unfortunately, Rallysport magazine only started publishing a photo of every car on the RAC the next year, 83, and doesn't have one of Salonen (No.12) in 82. (Salonen retired in Hafren after breaking a halfshaft when in 7th place and not being able to climb a hill).
I can't find a photo but one report does say it was Salonen's first outing in a Violet in 82.

"Boland's normal co-driver is Damien Morrisey. If Damien can't go his father Michael Morrisey sits with Boland."

Hi RobertS
Unfortunately these infos are EXTREMELY hard to find,I can only advise some contacts

http://rally.avtomanija.com/
This is the website of a Slovenian car-magazine which was extremely popular in Yugoslavia and dedicated a lot of pages to Yugoslavian motorsport.
They still run,if anyone has some infos they must be the ones...

The following sites hardly have these infos, but if you are desperate....

I can put your requests to www.desno4.com (http://www.desno4.com) (register) ,the biggest Croatian forum but I doubt you will find any infos there

http://www.autoklub.hr/ is a old Croatian newspapaer who used to follow our motorsport (now very little pages)
http://www.automototrend.com.hr/ a magazine which followed rallying a lot but then it stopped publishing, now its a website

www.pungas.com (http://www.pungas.com) great forum,but little activity lately

The works Fiat 124 Abarths, ladies team....these were extremely rare ocassions in the early 70s in Yugoslavia.

...one more Tjeerd. "Golden Tulpen" was my mistake it was "Gulf Tulpen Rally". Is it possible that 6th in Hessen was Reihanr Heinbach? He was driving mainly or maybe even exclusively Escorts (in 1977, too) and that block in 6th drove a Kadett. And one more question on certain Delettre. Was he the Alphonse Delettre whos name is attached to the name of known rally in Belgium?

Hessen Rallye

2 Smolej - Menne, FRG (Opel Kadett GT/E) 15935
3 Kuhn - Hopfe, FRG (Porsche Carrera) 16242

9 Kern - Gründer, FRG (BMW 2002 TII) 17169
10 Thiry - Hohenadel, FRG (Ford Escort RS2000) 17203

I don't know if it's Reinhard Hainbach in 6th or if there's another Hainbach. He's not mentioned in the report in the book, but that's mostly focused on the Dutch participants anyway (Guliker - Van den Brink being the first Dutch finishers in 17th).

Alphonse Delettre was the organiser who turned the Routes Blanches into the well-known international event Boucles de Spa in the 1960s. I don't think it's him in this result.

Not sure if this goes here on not... (Or if this is a really stupid question... :) )

Someone once said... "[???] is really good. But he is fat, and he smokes and drinks alot. If [???] actually got fit he'd be far better than any of us!" - or something along those lines... Any idea who said it about whom?
I think this is from Group B time.

Sorry if stupid question.
Thank you

I remember something alike:
"he not only smokes and drinks, he is fat and worn glasses and still he is one of the fastests".
For sure it was about Timo Salonen and I think it was opinion of Ari Vatanen.

Are you able to clear up this: "if a cetrain Windsor (10th overall in Criterium Lucien Bianchi'77) is a member of British Royal Family? I remeber that somebody of that family did RAC rallies... but I don't remember his name (it was Prince of something)"

If you find something it is OK. Don't worry.
Here is FIA Cup 1978:
1. Monte Carlo 21-28.01
2. Arctic 03-05.2 (ERC)
3. Swedish 10-12.02
4. Safari 23-27.3
5. Portugal 19-23.4

19. RAC 19-23.11

No more than 5 WRC, 2 ERC coefficient 4 and 1 FIA Special rallies to count. If driver didn't participate in ERC round he loses highest WRC score. Drivers not taking part in WRC can keep their points and be classified in the FIA Cup.
point score system was: 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 points for 1st down to 6th overall. Same rules were in 1977.

3. Gilbert Staepelaere / "Vaillant" (Ford Escort RS 1800)

Ypres Rally 1975
4. Gilbert Staepelaere / "Vaillant" (Ford Escort MK1)

Lucien Bianchi 1975

Unfortunately they are not really clear and there can be some small spelling mistakes as example with the codriver of Jan van der Marel, 11th overall. It must be Berkhof. Note that 'Didi' (3rd overall) is the father of Larry Cols.

Lucien Bianchi 1983
17. Jean-Claude Probst / Yves Bozet

I don't know the real name of "Vaillant". Staepelaere drove all his rallies in 1975 and 1976 with him.

Definitely not!

It is Paul Windsor from Liverpool (a neighbour of mine at the time). His co-driver on this event was Brian Goff.

The member of the British Royal Family that used to compete was Prince Michael of Kent. He maintains his interest in the sport and is currently President of the Council of the UK Motorsports Association.

I just checked old magazines and in french Auto Sport I found a table on subject of FIA Cup 77 and Scottish was in that tabel (!). I found also a press cutter with Scottish Rally'77 result and there was a note (writen with my hand) "coeff 4". It was 32 years ago... I was ready to write "Kabouter you are right" and now I am back in the starting point. But that Sport Auto tabel is a kind of evidence.

I don't know - and I competed on it!
The programme does not mention the ERC coefficient.
If it was 4 rather than 3 it must have been a last minute change because another Coeff 4 rally was cancelled?
All I remember is UK Internationals were usually Coeff 2 and I think the Scottish and Circuit of Ireland tried to upgrade (Manx later too?). It just wasn't important to 99% of the entrants at the time!

The entry list shows me as co-driver for two different cars - but I only managed to be in one!

I'm pretty certain that the Manx managed to upgrade, hence participation by drivers like Patrick Snijers and Fabrizio Tabaton in 1988, for instance. Don't know about the Circuit and the Scottish.

I'm pretty certain that the Manx managed to upgrade, hence participation by drivers like Patrick Snijers and Fabrizio Tabaton in 1988, for instance. Don't know about the Circuit and the Scottish.

The Manx was a round of the European Championship from 1983, with coeff 3 in 1985 & coeff 4 in 1986 and remained at the highest coefficient (later 20) until 1996. The event withdrew from the European Championship in 1997 when the BRC was for F2 cars & it wasn't politically correct for the top BRC runners to be beaten by A8 cars.

si , almeno i primi 10 di quasi tutti i rally, a volte anche di più.

First Donegal Rally was 1972. Apart from 2001 it has run every year since.

There is a great book, "The Donegal Experience" by Ivan Fuery. Great pictures and top tens (except 1972 & 1973).

I'll try to get Ivan to post here with how to get a copy.

Fred

Martin Pfundner's book 'Die Alpenfahrt 1910-1973' has Max Nathan as Sauerwein's co-driver. I've seen other sources too with the same information.
Who was O or G Castell then?
There were one Otto Gastell, an Argentine-born German journalist who co-drove with Hans Joachim Walter at the 1963 Rallye Wiesbaden.
Maybe he intended to do an 'inside' report from the Alps in '53, but had to vacate the seat for some reason.
There's a lot of last minute co-driver swapping in the '50's and '60's. And the organisers did not always pick up on it.
At least they've made a lot of work for people like myself who find it stimulating to make research into it.
And they're partially responsible for my grey hair colour...........

Madame von Hoesch = Bossanyi von Hoesch

On the 1956 CdA entry list #232 was Rickert and Kripplen in a 1300cc Porsche.

Does anyone know why Chuck Waine drove and the car was 1500?

And since it was now in the next class was the number 3xx?

I don't think so. Even there wasn't any rally held in Portugal to be a part of ERC 1974.

As far as I know, the Tour de France didn't count finally for the '70 ERC for Drivers. 'Though I don't know for sure the reason, maybe was for accepting Group 6 cars like the MS650 Matras...
