What's wrong with the car we have?

The IRL wouldn't have used it for the past 10 years if it wasn't great.

I'm putting my faith in Tony George to do what right for American formula car racing.

I have to say that car is a pretty car and the current IRL chasis is really the ugly sister that you never take out in public but quite happily sleep with if no one knows about it...... It does the job, but its FUGLY!!!!

I hoipe its the car above with out the air box, and has a spanking turbo in it.

But to be honest I'd love to see the old Reynards back, and the Lola's.

Do you think we will have more than one chasis supplier in the future, because I think that is the way the series needs to go. Set the rules then allow anyone to build a chasis, I'd love to see Penske do it again.

"What's wrong with the car we have?"

Funny.

I love that Superfund car. I was disappointed the DP01 didn't look more like it. Maybe the next generation Indycar can be more like a real race car.

Ever ask some of the drivers who have experienced the DP01's in competition? They are absolute beasts, especially when it comes to road and street circuits. Not bad for ovals though except when they go airborne.

Tony George ought to delegate this responsibility to Tony Cottman. He's got more of a clue what's good for the sport than TG. Just make sure its American made, not imported from Europe with weak dollars and escalating shipping costs.

Sorry Gary, orphaned context. Dallara is the beast I was referring to. NOT the DP01. That has been tagged a very nimble point-and-go racer.

Yes, and with an engine with enough torque that it requires a little muscling from the driver. That's what I'm looking for!!

The Car Must Be Sexy, And Wicked Quick To Drive........A Drivers Car!!!

Its time for a change and bring in a more exotic, better car. plus, with the unification, everyone needs to be on equal terms with the cars, only a few of the former CCWS teams have figured out the Dallara

nice car....

It could absolutely pass as an AOWR car - but not now - it is a Superleague car and it would be foolish to take someone's cast-off...

Next Indycar needs to be more distinctive from even its good looking international cousins.....

The DP01 is American made, sexy, sleek yet strong and muscley looking.

It still gets my vote. I think it's the perfect American open wheel racecar!

I prefer the Dallara over that thing, actually. I would even take the DP-01 over it.

Looks good - for a Formula 1 ripoff road-racing series. Not AOW.

I know that's a DP01. I was talking about the original post - the superleague formula car.

Sponsorship isn't about 125 mph billboards. The color livery is equally important. I know some major sponsors who were happy to keep their decals hand size on the nose cone. It was their brand activation and event hospitality that paid dividends.

It would be great if the new car got the look of 1996-2000 champcars. I didn't like the DP01 at all. Looked to F1ish. Don't like cars that look like F1 cars.

And..........very important.........DON'T GIVE THE NEW CAR A RAISED (is this the right word?) NOSE!!!

I'll take a raised nose if it means that the aero grip comes from the undertray and we can reduce or eliminate the reliance on the front and rear wings.

Those cars were beautiful (In fact my favorite of all open wheel history, especially the Lotus) , but extremely dangerous!

I've seen an interview with Mario Andretti and his wife, who talked about how in the sixties, they were reluctant to have too close a relationship with the drivers because there were so many casualties back in the sixties.

But, on the other hand if they could pull off a modern version of this look, I'd love it!!

The super league Panoz chassis is very close to the DPO1 design. Considering they were essentially designed by the sdame designers at the same time, that's not a suprise. Actually, since the first time we saw the superleague car in the same first spy photos of the Dp01, I've always thought I liked it a little better than the Dp01 in many aspects. As much as I love the low slung look of the turbo Indycar/champcars, that airbox is valueable real estate. Most of the modern open wheel cars are horrible for the ad space.

Exactly. Whenever someone says they want a car with no wings, they always refer back to the sixties F1/Indy cars. Sure, they look great. But in 2008, it's gonna look more like the Formula Ford I showed, than Jim Clark's Lotus.

I think these are gorgeous cars too - among the prettiest ever... although I am pretty partial to the 1982-1988 cars too....

so do you think a look or a performance envelope is more important? As much as I would like an updated Lotus or Lola I do not think they could be made to perform as well as desirable...

I tend to think the cars need to be able to lap Indy in the 200-220 range at a minimum - which means a wingless car following the mid-1960's model would probably not work safely.. you could pull it off wiht something modeled after the McLAren M-16 or Eagle of the 1970's or a 1980's March without wings......

It belongs to a friend of mine. I believe it was a Jim Clark car. I know he drove #82, but I think this might have bee a backup car or something. I'll ask Jim Jaeger when I see him again. Meantime here is a link to the class page from our Concours d'Elegance. One of our special displays this year was Indy cars. Janet Guthrie was our Grand Marshall.

I said they would look "MORE LIKE" the modern day Formula Ford than the 60's Lotus. Not "EXACTLY" like. Ok, maybe bigger sidepods, recline the driver a bit... but it's not going to look ANYTHING like a 60's deathtrap.

If there's a modern day open wheel car that does speeds similar to an F1/Indycar or even a GP2/Indylights that also don't have wings - then please show me.

Totally crazy idea, but what if Ferrari said to TG, "we'll give our 2008 car design to any chassis manufacturers you want, and they can mass produce it for a 3-year run beginning in 2010."? Aside from some of the technical issues, would this be good for Indycar?

I ask because everyone criticizes current European formula cars. I liked the Lola, Reynard, and even the Panoz Champcars. But I don't think anyone of those, and especially not the current Dallara, comes close to the visual impact that a current F1 car has. That Superleague car is pretty sweet, though.

Well the answer is we were both right. Bobby Johns and Jim Clark were both linked to the chassis. I just got the following note from Jim Jaeger:

Gary,

Bobby Johns drove the car to 7th place in 1965 (number 83). The same chassis was driven to 2nd place by Jim Clark in 1966 (number 7)
