Does anyone know of any websites where I can book inexpensive/cheap flights from California to Australia and return. Thanks.

Don't you mean from Australia to Cali and return?

http://www.webjet.com.au
http://www.travel.com.au/
These will let you compatre flights across a range of carriers. BUT... In some cases, actually checking to airlines themselves may be of advantage:

Experience tells me that the best way to get to the US is either:
Korean Air - http://www.koreanair.com/
Air New Zealand - http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/default.htm
Air Pacific - http://www.airpacific.com/

Flying Qantas is usually more expensive and subject to maintenance strikes, and Northwest and United although a little cheaper than Qantas are both not very nice IMHO.
For the nicest flight, try either Air NZ or even JAL if you want to stay a night in Tokyo (which is well worth it for electric appliances)

No! I meant from San Fran to Melbourne and then back to San Fran.

So far, Orbitz is the best option.

Doh. I wish this thread had come up earlier. I have already booked my flight from Guangzhou, China to Perth on Singapore Air. I could have flown out from Hong Kong, but the ferry ride to Hong Kong would make the cost the same. I should have looked for more options though. Hope you find a decent price Valve.

When are you coming over?

Let's have a drink and chat. Yes?
