Hungarian MotoGP round proposition unveiled in Budapest
Wednesday, 23 July 2008

MotoGP rights holders Dorna Sports S.L. have made a proposal to the FIM for the inclusion of a Hungarian Grand Prix event on the 2009 World Championship calendar.

An announcement of the construction of the Balatonring circuit in the Eastern European country –and its possible inclusion as one of next year´s tracks- was made at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus in Budapest on Wednesday morning. In attendance were Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Hungarian Minister for National Development and Economy Bajnai Gordon, Dr. Rona Ivan from Magyar Turizmus Zrt. and Sedesa Construction President Vicente Cotino, alongside Hungary´s 125cc World Champion Gabor Talmacsi and his team manager Jorge Martinez Aspar (in his capacity as President of WCM).

Magyar Turizmus Zrt. has formed a subsidiary under 100% ownership for promoting any possible MotoGP races in the new Hungarian circuit. The racetrack itself will be operated by a company, named Balatonring Zrt., 30% of which is controlled by Magyar Turizmus Zrt. and the remaining 70% by Worldwide Circuit Management S.L. (WCM) of Spain. The track will be built by Sedesa.

MotoGP has a strong fanbase in Hungary, further increased by the success of Talmacsi in the 2007 season. Thousands of Hungarians watch World Championship races in person during the course of the season, with Grand Prix events held at Brno in the Czech Republic the most highly attended due to its close proximity to Hungary.

Are they there in calendar at the cost of Shanghai GP? we will not see rider in wheelchair on the podium anymore.

Mostly good news, I think.

Hungary has excellent fans - as we can see from their attendance in Brno - and clearly a popular rider in Gabor, and team with the Toth outfit.

On the downside, the track layout looks a bit rubbishy - "Valencia 2" springs to mind and I'd honestly have prefered a race at the Hungaroring which I think would make a much better bike track than car track.

Still, mostly positive, if it happens. It seems to be proposed for next year but not built yet.

I think the layout is OK enough. It looks flat though, I would prefer some elevation changes.

I have to disagree with you Pat. From the pictures, it looks like there are some great over taking spots at this track, which should lead to some great battles. Two long straights, plus four tighter corners, as well as some flowing corners in the midfield. I like the design. Only a race will tell though.

in my option its looks like half of Valencia, half of a track like Donnington Park, would it be better racing on the Hungaroring instead if its not built? or race at Hungaroring altogether

There is a reason the race is not at the Hungaroring. The new track is situated at Lake Balaton which is one of the biggest tourist destination in Hungary. The region has about 100K hotel rooms but most of the tourists come during the summer months. Right now the government wants to prolonge that season - the Dakar Central European Rally was held at the lake in April and the MotoGP race will be in September 2009, and then springtime from 2010 on. There is a small but developing airport 10 kms from the tracks and the new M7 motorway is right next to it.

And to be honest I am really happy that we'll get another professional racetrack. It could have a positive effect on Hungarian motorsports as a whole. And I am really looking forward to root for Gábor next year.

Just looks like they tried to cram in the lengthiest circuit possible in the small (also flat) space they had to do it. Boring. They should go to the Hungaroring instead.

Yep, the first couple of turns did remind me of Valencia circuit too, I can't find any similiarity to Donnington though, but the last part kind of resembles the fast section of Assen.

It seems very similar to the New Autodromo Internacionla Do Algarve

Is it the same designer or are current designers all following each other?
