Just for fun and perspective, not "proof" of anything.

The ChampCars picked up over a second for Qualifying, 1:07.2, so will be interesting to see how The IndyCars do from P3 to Q1. The 03 ChampCars were the first 750 HP ones so a second slower than 02.

What surprised me is that Gil de Ferran's ARX-01b would be on Row 6 for Sunday's race based on laptimes. I didn't know the LMPs would be that close to IndyCars, considering the 5-second laptime difference at Long Beach between LMPs and Champ Cars. I know from testing that the DP01s and the IndyCars had pretty close laptimes.

I think the Dallara would be about 3-4 seconds off at LB, which isnt too far off if you do the math. Where the ALMS car shines is in downforce and high speed sections, so at different tracks they will have varying performance levels.

The current Dallara would be a perfect match for the 06 Lolas if they had 50 -100 more HP.

BTW, the difference at Long Beach in race lap times was 4 seconds. This may have something to do with qualifying procedures, the ChampCars seem to have more of a spread (more slowdown) from Q to race than the ALMS or Indycar, I'm not exactly sure why.

Pagenaud did a 1:06.28 in the DP01 last year during a test.

More fans share your opinion than the TG cartel will ever admit to. The Dallara is way past its prime. A US made chassis like DP01 should be a priority for 2009/2010.

I always thought the place where they shine in braking since the LMPs use carbon brakes and the Indy Cars us steel on the RC.

Yes they are strong on braking because of downforce. The tires can hold about 1.5 times the load on them before they break loose. So without downforce we would be limited to about 1.5Gs braking or cornering. The enclosed cars are much more efficient at generating downforce with less drag than open wheel cars.

In general they can make about 5 lbs of downforce for every pound of drag vs 3 for the OW (thats in general for high downforce configs). Also they have traction control and maybe a tire advantage, though hard to say about the last.

What I find puzzling are former CC/Cart fans moaning about the speed of the Dallara/Honda.

It is within a second or so of the fatsest laps ever run here by an open wheel car, pretty much the same speed as the 03 Champcar.

I don't recall the moaning about those "slugs" :) .

True, the less restricted Panoz would be about 3 seconds quicker with 100 more HP and reds, but that makes the chassis's pretty much a push.

While we all want to see a new chassis soon, a 11,700 RPM 740 BHP RC version of the current Honda V8 would make the current car comparable to the lastPanoz inn lap times.

That would be far easier to implement than the new chassis and gets my vote as the most immediate change.
