10. Jack Brabham (AUS) - Jack Brabham is a three-time World Champion, who won two World Championships back-to-back in 1959 and 1960. He raced 128 times in his 15-year career, winning 14 of those races and achieving 31 podium finishes.

His 1966 World Championship triumph was extra special as he became the only man to win a Formula One World Championship with one of his own cars.

9. Nelson Piquet (BRA)
8. Alberto Ascari (ITA)
7. Niki Lauda (AUST)
6. Sir Jackie Stewart (SCO)
5. Jim Clark (SCO)
4. Alain Prost (FRA)
3. Juan Manuel Fangio (ARG)
2. Ayrton Senna (BRA)

1. Michael Schumacher (GER) - His domination of his sport can be compared to that of Tiger Woods or Roger Federer. However, unlike those two, Schumacher has made it as the best in my opinion.

When he got in full swing, the records started tumbling. He holds the record for most World Championships (seven), most consecutive World Championships (five), most race victories (91), most fastest laps (76), most pole positions (68), most points scored (1,369) and most races won in a single season (13). He is also the only driver to have achieved an entire season of podium finishes, on his way to his 154 podium finishes.

Overall, Schumacher holds 31 Formula One records.

Although often a controversial driver, Schumacher has, in my view, done enough to be considered the best of all-time in his sport.

Saw this list on Bleacherreport, there is no foundation for Senna in second, he did not even beat all of those in his own era!

No Alonso, Fittipaldi, Hakkinhen, Mansell or Hamilton??

Alonso - probably should be in the list, best driver in F1 at the moment

Fittipaldi - Equally you could make an argument for him but i guess you can't have everyone in it

Hakkinhen - very good driver, but lets be realistic, won both his championships with a car advantage

Mansell - I just don't think he was as good as the others listed

Hamilton - you can't be serious... he has been in the sport for 5 minutes, has yet to really dominate the sport which i think you have to do to be considered a great, plus we have only seen what he can do in a good car, most drivers can look like a star in a good car, lets see what he can do in a bad car ala Alonso in last years Renault

Well, neither of the first two deserve to be labelled "great" after Suzuka 1990 and Adelaide 1994.

And the greatest ever racing driver just scrapes in as he did race a Formula 1 Maserati in the French GP of 1947. I mean the one and only Tazio Nuvolari

Listing the top ten based on wins / championships etc is easy and boring, what is good is listing the top 10 who are spectacular and showmen and have something special about them. My list would go like this:

1. Ayrton Senna
2. Gilles Villeneuve
3. Pedro Rodriguez
4. Nigel Mansell
5. Keke Rosberg
6. Fernando Alonso
7. Jean Alesi
8. Ronnie Peterson
9. Fangio
10. Jochen Rindt

I like the list a lot, IMO it is balanced and objective.

1: Gilles Villeneuve
2: Alan Jones
3: Ayrton Senna
4: Alain Prost
5: Rene Arnoux
6: Fernando Alonso
7: Nelson Piquet
8: Niki Lauda
9: Keke Rosberg
10:Nigel Mansell

Purely for excitement value. Watching Jones and Villeneuve bang heads at Monaco (amongst other occasions), and Villeneuve and Arnoux at Paul Ricard(? maybe wrong..) were seminal F1 moments.

Congratulations, you've all asked the most impossible question of all time: Who is the greatest F1 driver?

That question is more impossible than what is the meaning of life? But Id say anyway:

1. Ayrton Senna
2. Alberto Ascari
3. Juan Manuel Fangio
4. Michael Schumacher
5. Sir Jackie Stewart
6. Jim Clarke
7. Gilles Villenueve
8. Alain Prost
9. Fernando Alonso
10. Nelson Piquet

These are always fun. :D Here's my list:

1. Clark
2. Fangio
3. Schumacher
4. Senna
5. Prost
6. Stewart
7. Lauda
8. Alonso
9. Rindt
10. Fittipaldi

Maybe Villeneuve would be on the list too, if I'd ever seen him. (I guess you had to see him to appreciate him.) But I haven't, so... And then there's Moss.. But it seems suitable somehow that the Top 10 list should have only World Champions.

Schumacher
Fangio
Prost
Senna
Clark
Stewart
Lauda
Moss

Only 8 there but I will have to consider the rest after the current group of drivers retire, because several are threatening a place in that top 10.
