This season’s German Grand Prix will see the return of one of the most spectacular single-make competitions in motor racing history. The legendary BMW M1 Procar series will be resurrected at Hockenheim in July for a one-off special event.

The celebrated competition, which ran as a support series for Formula One racing in 1979 and 1980, saw the five fastest F1 drivers from Friday practice for the Grand Prix compete against 15 young hopefuls in specially prepared versions of BMW's M1 supercar.

Yes, they ran on the Saturday and Niki Lauda won.

Was Klien doing a test run or did he get beaten by Lauda in the race?

Wouldn't it be great to have the top 6 in the Championship race them :D

It'd be blummin' marvellous, but it'll never happen. In 1979/80 it didn't matter that, for example, Piquet (Brabham Alfa driver) was seen racing a BMW. In 2008 Mercedes would not want their drivers to be seen anywhere near a BMW M1, let alone race it!!

Klien was in the race, too - and yes, he did get beaten by Lauda ;)

Apparently, there was a second race on Sunday morning, which Lauda didn't participate in (on account of his commentating duties for RTL) and which was won by Marc Surer. Unfortunately, I have yet to find the full results of both races on the web.

It's too bad that this series didn't continue over the years.

Then again I forgot that we're living in a different age of stiff driver contracts.
