Obviously those championships running to S2000 rules such as the BTCC and WTCC aren't going to be quicker, but the DTM could perhaps give GT's a run for their money.
Then again it depends what class of GT's we're talking about - GT1, GT2, etc.
To give you a sense of the difference, the fastest GT2 lap in qualifying around Monza last year was 1:50.140. The fastest WTCC qualifying lap was 1:59.487. Around other tracks the gap may be smaller, since Monza is flat out and the World touring cars only have 2 litre engines and 280 bhp, compared to the 450 bph of a GT2 car.

I believe DTM and GT1 are about the same speed, with V8 Supercars a little slower, all other tourers are definitely a fair bit slower than GT1 cars.

DTM aren't really touring cars in the true sense though, in fact they are pretty much just GT cars.

They're called Silhouettes aren't they? You're right, but as far as the likes of Autosport and manufacturers promoting their models seem to be concerned they fall into the touring car category.

What is the gap between GT1 and the DTM?

A quick check of 2007 qualifying results at Oschersleben shows GT1 1:24.492 and DTM 1:22.456. Not sure there are any other circuits they both ran at.
Might just be an Oschersleben thing but the DTM cars seem faster

Two seconds is a big gap, even if the track favours the DTM cars.

Come 2009, V8 Supercars won't be "touring cars" either.

The road going FG Falcon like the VE Commodore is both too wide and too long to meet the V8 Supercars Regulations. So also like the VE, it's had some sections cut out of the floor to make it narrower and out of the rear doors to make it shorter, and also like the VE has had to have the roof reprofiled.
Neither of them use engines, suspensions, gearboxes, drivetrains or brakes even remotely connected to the road cars...
... yet AVESCO still won't let Toyota build a V8 Supercar - go figure.

Depends how you define touring cars.
Some Group A tourers such as the Jags and Skylines were arguably GTs.

Would love to see the Lexus IS F in DTM or V8SC, even though its racing in Japan.

I'm certain that Lexus was meant to be a DTM from the beginning...
Also, if there was a baby GT class, I'd put the Honda Integra into it too.

This car was found out to be a modified Opel DTM car. There are however two IS350s racing in GT300 in Super GT. Looking at pictures of them they appear to be rear engined.

I think one question we can ask is..which is better?
For me it rules out the WTCC because the Touring Car Bureau seems to be almost erroding all credibility with it's constant changing of the rules and regs.
