I see Dan Wheldon won US$35,000 for first place at Iowa, Dixon US$15,000 for fourth and US$10,000 for pole. I think prize money goes to 5th place only. The Indy 500 is different I realise however how does the prize money work this season. I think each car gets US$1.2m per season on top. A full explanation would be much appreciated.

Yup, each car gets $50,000 and winnings and only the top 4 get extra money. Brand new for 2008.

$35,000, $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000

This is the same concept that CART operated on until the selling of stock except that the car owners needed to fund CART to the tune oof $250,000 per car and you got 2 votes plus $25,000 per race per car, maximum of 2.

Then a $515,000 purse was split over the top 12. So it was $85,000 if you were a member if you won. (1995 Marlboro 500 Winner, Patrick Racing was not a member, thus won $60,000)
If you finished 12th you got $27,500 if a member, if not $2,500.

Personally I would like to see more money into it but you can only stretch X amount of money so far. A series sponsor would help.

This BTW was explained in this year's 500 Program.

Yes, they announced at the time of the TEAM program of $1.2 million subsidy per car that purses would be cut down to what's been said here, plus the raising of the Indy purse by something like $4 million.

Formula One and NASCAR both have subsidy-type programs and have for years. When NASCAR issues a boxscore, however, those subsidies are included on a pro-rated basis for the season for the teams participating in the programs.

That is correct and NASCAR has loads of them.

What about somebody like PCM or Luzco?

$1.2 million divided by the 17 races other than Indy is roughly $70,500 per race. Is that what they would get as their part of the purse? Someone else mentioned Wheldon got $50,000 + $35,000 extra for winning. Would that be what a non full-time team would get? $50,000 for qualifying?

They are not full members so they get what they win. Just like the CART days, non member not in the top 12 got ZERO.

Why do you think Roth is showing with 2 cars? $100,000

$1,200,000/24cars. It is $1,200,000 per race plus $105,000

Hmmm, It doesn't seem like a good way to encourage outsiders to come in and take a chance to pay nothing. I mean I know purses in no way come close to covering expenses, but it's still nice to have something extra for showing up and racing.

That is the way it was for years in CART and in the CCWS. Thing is I do not like it but they need more money to make it work.

Do you know where the $1,200,000 comes from? Not sponsors, not promoters, not suppliers so where?

Isn't it just the prize money that would be paid except flattened so it's the same for all?

All series are doing this now. For example, In 1998 Jeff Gordon won $637,000 of a $4.9 million purse for the Brickyard 400. When he won again in 2001, He only won $428,000 of a $5.8 million purse. Nascar flattened the purses, certainly not to the sameness of the TEAM program, but flattened none-the-less.

And they donated the whole $60,000 to aid the victims of the Iowa Flooding. Fantastic humanitarian act .... Thanks Guys
