Yes, Clio R3 from Munaretto Group in Italy and arranged by Renault Sport France. Kris got a call after an outing in an older Clio S1600 in Ireland.

Simon J-J with his R2 on Nr 1. Hope there isn't to much dust for the second car!!

Don't worry. In first day we will have only four short SS (longest is 15 km), and all priority drivers will start with 2 min. intervals

wwbroe
2nd July 2008, 22:40
I see that on the official entrylist Sola is still listed with Punto JTD (diesel car). Does anybody know more about this or is it just a mistake of organisation?

Mirek
2nd July 2008, 22:52
Probably yes. Because what is important, is class. And there is N4. It doesn't matter which car You use but what matters is class which You can't change. Therefore I think it is Punto S2000.

c4
2nd July 2008, 23:04
Sola will be in the Punto S2000

Does anyone have the Rally Guide 2? If you do, please can you tell me what time the shakedown begins?

Thanks.

It's available in supplementary regulations. Shakedown (or Training Section as it's called in Russia) starts on Wednesday, July 9th, at 18:00 for the crews of IRC Priority.

As for another question above, the list of start numbers in Russia isn't the same thing as the start list. The start list will be available only after technical comissions before the start of Leg1. I don't think that Jean-Joseph will run first on the road, so no worries, mates.

Of course he will have #1 on his car. What I mean is that probably he won't run first on the road.

Novikov will start with Dale Moscatt, (2005 Australian Rally Champion) on Subaru N14. Today the team goes to Estonia, and for 2 days they will test both Mitsubishis (N12 and N14) and will try to drive with new co-driver. Evo9, which was broken in Turkey, will be repeared in Estonia. And 207 Super 2000 was just test of a new car for Evgeny Novikov. He liked the car, but said "Oh, and if to put turbosharger to this car - it would be the best rallycar!" :)

He wanted from beginning go to Russia, but after Ypres he wasnt. But it looks his good position in championship changed his mind and persuaded him to Russia. About Madeira I dont know, from beginning they wasnt go there. I think most important for this fact will be result in Russia.

On the eve of the start of the "Russia 2008" rally Evgeny Novikov's team has held a full scale tests in Estonia. They were not only tests of a car - it was necessary to take several serious decisions and they had been taken.

Yes - the same car that he driven last year, when he was leader of the rally before he'd broken the engine on the huge jump. Yesterday I told to Alexey Shchukin - Evgeny and Dale found the comfortable way to write notes in English and they both are ready to fight for the victory. We'll see :)

It will take a little time. RallyRUS works on RusRC stages closely with Russian site, devoted to the national championship (rrch.ru). I've call them - the shakedown is finished, but journalists are on their way to press-center. As soon as RRCH will publish the info, we'll translate it and publish in English.

Still no times of shake-down? From what i heard the conditions of the special stages are really bad, with big rocks all over the place, it looks like they are tougher then the stages of Turkey rally and Acropolis, so that should be hard for mechanic. If somebody have any results of shake, please let us know. I hope tomorrow stage results will come quicker, if not it will be difficult to follow rally. :)

Mastering three days’ race.

The time-table of the present “Rally Russia” is far from what we have been used to during last seasons. Technical check ups compressed into one day, test section till late at night, in the morning – an early “virtual” start, transient first day and driving to a gala start … Besides everybody is in an agony of suspense – whether skies will be clear or the race will be the same as the last year when it was held mostly in bad weather? This issue can seriously affect the condition of the track. But let us start from the beginning …

Yes, yes. The Open Championship of Russia has a substantial reinforcement. Favorites of an international qualification – debutants of our national series. Almost half of them are debuting on Russian tracks. These crews can rather seriously prevent our favorites to score “national” points, to influence the standings in our championship. So, let us listen to opinions of these “debutants” …

Hänninen says he has difficulties to drive the s2000, because it has to be driven in so high revs compaired to a grN car, because of that he has problem to choose what gears to use.
Also he says that the roads are very soft, and tomorrow even softer, and expect many drivers to have flats tomorrow.

Not unexpected considering the Honda has maybe 30 more BHP than the Clio and Meeke hadn't driven the car until SD whereas Wilks did an Australian national rally and has tested his car a few times. Think they are both doing well despite Meeke's 2 punctures and loose sump guard. Tomorrow and Sunday whould be interesting for all crews.

By the way, the main problem for competitors today were stones and the road condition. Nearly all cars, that went off the race, were damaged with stones. There were just few crashes. Stones are the mystery of Vyborg rally - they appear on the road from the wheels of the previous car. Just lottery.

SS-1: “Supers” are advancing.

As it could be expected from the very first special stage an army of the IRC crews rushed to attack. However the best of ours were relatively not far behind. At this special stage in the absolute qualification on the first places were four “Super-2000” - Hänninen, Alen, Basso (both from Abarth) and Kopecky in Peugeot. The fifth time was shown by Evgeny Novikov. At that his gap was less than a second on a km from the leader. On 15 kilometers of the special stage “Yashino” it summed up to 13.5 seconds.

SS-2: Three of ours in the ten.

At the second special stage the foreign crews continued to press the haunters of the Russian championship. This time the “troika” of ours have broken into the first ten and occupied three last positions: Novikov, Zhigunov, Zimin. In the best traditions of the Russian championship the gaps among them are minimal – all the three “squeezed” in 3.5 seconds at a special stage. The gap from Juho Hänninan who won the first run of “Kutuzovo” special stage was not so much this time, all the first ten are in 16 seconds.

There are thousands of them - I mean srones, and fery few spectators. Wait some minutes - I'll show you why 12 stages is enough... Today were the best stages from all three days. This roads consists from stones. You can take away one, two, ten - no result. But of course if there is huge "bul'nik", its better to take it away.

Also some problem for Vouilloz who lost almost a minute, and Basso who lost some time on stage 5 and Loix wasn't very fast on first stage off the day. I think the problem is the same - broken wheels...

One more article: "Ours: As equals! Alen: Any chance?"

At the concluding stage of the day the last year winner of the “Rally Russia” Anton Alen sustained a punctured wheel and lost about a minute. The next special stage had been won by his fellow countryman Hänninen who improved his leadership up to 21.5 seconds. For the first time in this rally Russians gained half of the places in the first ten! The second half …

Hey Kevin, thanks for the article, but i allready read it this morning, but it is concerning yesterday, where Freddy made fastest time on stage 3. He lost time on first stage yesterday due to a puncture (again!). On first stage this morning he lost time again, but i don't know why yet. If he continues his good pace on second run trough todays stages, i think he might be on the podium. ;)

Loix and Kopecky had probably punctures on stage 7, that's why they are loosing so much time. However i think the Finns and Novikov are by far the fastest men on the stages. Kopecky is rather fast too, but unfortunally his puncture costed him a lot of time. Good pace of Wilks in the 2WD category. One more stage to go for today. :p

rally over for us on the first stage of day 2. impossibly rough. on a slow 2nd gear corner, the road was only the width of the car, we struck a rock the size of 2 footballs, right in the middle of the road. With nowhere to go, the rock cut thro the sump guard and holed the sump.

Triumph and disasters of Russian favorites …

Evgeny Novikov has continued his ascent at the famous “Topolki” special stage - he credited to his account his first victory (and first “Russian” victory) at the special stages of ”Rally Russia-2008” and at the same time ascended to the second line of the general Protocol. Andrey Zhigunov and Boris Zimin ceased the struggle while Alexander Zheludov fell far back because of a punctured wheel …

good training for Hänninen and a relatively good drive considering no test time and first time in the car at the shakedown, the best is that he did beat his teammates without bigger problems, someone might think the roads are simular to Finnish roads, well they are not.
He made also a mark in Peugeots book incase the consider to come back to the WRC.
About Alen, I think very little driving lately shows in lack of speed and confidence, this shows how important it is to make right decissions about what to drive and when.

Thatkind of surface can only be fixed with tarmac, its all loose sand and stones, there is nothing to bind the sand with, you can easily see after a few cars that the road is gone, our roads has clay mixed with the sand and gravel, that makes the groundstones not to come up so easy, and makes the roads much faster too. The difference is really big.

I agree. There were some sandy and bumpy sections but generally they were fast and flowing forest roads and this was reflected in the results favouring the Finns.

Hanninen was great, it's a shame Alen had his punctures because it meant there was no real battle for victory.

Regarding Alen, this was his third gravel event in the Punto this year so he ought to have done better (although he didn't get any real mileage in Portugal) Also the 207 generally has the edge on the Punto, but boy does Anton need to cheer up, he is a bit unexcitable like other Finnish drivers, except without any of the humour!

Few days after the rally we'll publish some news and galleries on RallyRUS site. I'd like to welcome you to visit our site... Of course I see, that meanwhile Russian rally is interesting for foreigners as exotic, but today you could notice new Russian names - Evgeny Novikov (www.e-novikov.com (http://www.e-novikov.com)), Andrey Zhigunov (www.pro-sportrally.ru (http://www.pro-sportrally.ru)), Evgeny Vertunov (www.vertunov.com (http://www.vertunov.com), archive English version avaliable at http://vertunov.rallyrus.spb.ru/eng/index.php), but this rally for him (Russian Rally Champion 2007) was very unlucky. Here in Russia we have 9-round national championship, 15-rounds rally cup, few monocups (Mitsubishi, Fiesta, Renault Logan, Citroen). Maybe we are somewhere studuing to drive fast, somewhere our pilots are faster Finns... But it's life. Very interesting life in rallystyle.

By the way - 2008 rally season will finish in the end of September in Novorossijsk with rally "Novorossijsk Russia 2008" - the candidate to WRC stage in 2010. WRC in Russia, on the Black Sea? Sounds good!

Thank you for your attention, now few hours to sleep - and everything from the very beginning :) ...

Alex, i would like to thank you and the rest off the team for the fantastic work that you have done. You were the reason we could keep up to date with what was happening during Rally Russia. We saw indeed a great drive of your countryman Novikov, it was a real pitty that he didn't make it to the finish, he surely did deserve it. Keep up the good work and keep us informed of the Russian rallychampionship. Cheers and thanks. :D

good training for Hänninen and a relatively good drive considering no test time and first time in the car at the shakedown...

You are not right. Hanninen had a pre-event test together with Kopecký. If You watch an onboard from Kopecký's test, You can see Hanninen's car at the end on the right side.

Thanks, Alex, for info. I was out for a rock festival so as last year, I again missed Russia...

I think, one of the best pictures of the rally: Novikov on SS12...

“Russia 2008” rally. Evgeny Novikov.

http://www.bestpics.ru/full/nov-russia08-small.jpgTo make a forecast in a rally is an ungrateful matter. The experience of the last year performance when Evgeny Novikov really challenged foreign plant’s teams but had to retire because of an engine’s damage at a landing after a jump prompted that this year we are awaited by a stiff and hard-edged struggle.
