Jim McKay died today at the age of 87. Mr. McKay for the longest time, for the better part of my life, was THE VOICE of ABC Sports, his "THRILL OF VICTORY and the AGONY OF DEFEAT" at the beginning of every ABC Wide World of Sports Broadcast will live forever. His distinctive voice was a great part of the classic ABC broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500 during the 70's and 80's. I am saddened to hear of his passing and will always have grateful memories of his work. Best wishes to his family and all of the sports broadcasting family. Another great voice is silenced.

I didn't start watching the 500 until my mid-teens in 1979.

One race that stood out so well over the years was the 1982 Indy 500, that McKay and Sam Posey were calling. With the last 10 laps narrowing down, Rick Mears was putting on a show while catching Gordon Johncock, who himself was providing some entertainment by hold Mears off.

Those last laps were intense with so much noise from the wild crowd, that Posey and McKay had to raise their voices and shout, just to be heard thru the audio system. "Rick Mears is making a move!"... "NO!.. he can't do it."
