Lancia to buy into Scuderia Toro Rosso?

The word from Italy is that the Fiat-owned Lancia brand is considering buying into Scuderia Toro Rosso, as part of its plan to revive the marque by expanding sales of Lancia models in Europe and beyond. The company's sporting heritage is impressive, dating back to 1906 when former Fiat Grand Prix driver Vincenzo Lancia set up the business, convinced that he could bring new ideas to the growing automobile business. He insisted that the company stay out of competition and concentrate on building luxurious and sporting road cars. He died in 1937 and his son Gianni took over the company and in the 1950s he hired Alfa Romeo racing designer Vittorio Jano and recruited Ferrari drivers Alberto Ascari and Gigi Villoresi and entered F1 with the D50, powered by a 2.5-liter V8 engine. The team began winning non-championship races in 1955 but the death of Ascari in a Ferrari sports car and serious financial problems resulted in Gianni Lancia selling the D50s to Enzo Ferrari. In 1956 the D50s won five of the seven World Championship events and continued to do well in 1957.

The Lancia company remained independent and in the 1960s Cesare Fiorio's HF Squadra Corse began to achieve good results in rallying with Lancia products. The team won the European Rally Championship in 1969, the same year as Lancia became part of the Fiat empire. HF Squadra Corse moved to the Lancia factory and became the motorsport department. In the 1970s Lancia won a string of WRC titles with the Stratos and also enjoyed some success in sports car racing, winning the World Championship in 1981. There was talk in 1980 of building a turbo engine for the new Toleman F1 team but in the end rallying remained the focus with the Lancia Delta. Six consecutive Manufacturers' titles and three Drivers' titles followed until 1992 when the factory pulled out of the WRC, leaving a few privateers to battle on for a period. Poor sales pushed it back into the Italian market and it came close to be closed down in 2004.

The firm is now being run by Frenchman Olivier Francois, who has been in the job for the last couple of years, and is committed to tripling Lancia sales to 300,000 cars in 2010. His aim is to add new models, get better dealerships and expand into new markets. At the moment the company is 80% dependent on the Italian market.

Among the strategies that Francois has introduced is to use Carla Bruni, the Italian singer-supermodel and new wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the advertising campaigns. It is worth noting that before joining Lancia, Francois worked at Peugeot Citroen in France and there may be links with recent rumours suggesting that Nicolas Todt, son of Jean Todt (formerly at Peugeot Citroen before joining Ferrari), might buy into the Italian-based team, to create a secondary Fiat-owned operation. This makes sense as the team would be allowed to use Ferrari engine and drivetrain technology but would need to build its own chassis. That would be a similar story to the Lancia Stratos, which was powered by a Ferrari engine.

It makes sense Lancia=Fiat
Ferrari=Fiat
It will have all the benefit of Ferrari
Yet legally autonomous
My friend’s dad had a
1966 Lancia. (I think)
That car was more fun than my ALFA

I guess that Ferrari have enough say in things to get the customer car ban lifted maybe. But does that mean that there'll be 4 Ferraris next year? That doesn't sound overly fair to the other backmarkers.

Lancia and Fiat do not have the economic health needed for a serious F1 team.

Ferrari are in F1 as Ferrari and are not financed by Fiat.

I'll believe it when I read it in News of The World. :p :

Ferrari never had anything against the customer cars being allowed in F1.
Williams and Spyker (now Force India) were the ones who threatened with legal action and so on.
Given that for a change of the Concorde Agreement (that's where these kind of regulations are agreed on) they need all the teams to agree wit the terms, so Ferrari or no Ferrari there i sno difference, they don't make the laws in F1!

the thing that some are forgeting is that the team has to design and build there own car.

But what is stoping two design teams and two build teams working from the one fabrication workshop on different days then shiping to the teams workshop.

I read this earlier today, and it seemed to me that it would be Maserati that would get the nod from FIAT to run the second team, using the rebadged Ferrari engines.

Lancia isn't bad, considering their long history in F1 up to the late 50's.

The same would've been thought about Alfa Romeo when they restarted their F1 effort in the late 70's. And we know how well that went :p :

Lancia and Fiat do not have the economic health needed for a serious F1 team.

Forget what you think you know about Fiat. From 2004 when Sergio Marchionne has become cheif of Fiat, he has turned Fiat around to such a degree that all financial analysts are in awe. The other week, The Economist ran an 18-page special report on Fiat and what he has done. The Swiss banks of UBS and Credit Swiss now both want him to become their CEO. The guy is a genius, and what he has done to Fiat will be taught in business schools around the world for years.

Fiat is in very good financial health right now. In 2007 it had a net after-tax income of €2.054 billion on revenue of €58.53 billion, and both are expected to rise this year. Even in this world economy, Fiat is now one of the most dynamic and profitable automobile companies in the world. Put away your pre-judgements about Fiat as a rusty and ailing company, the 2008 Fiat is a very successful one, and certainly in one of the best financial positions of any car maker.

Lancia is being re-introduced in UK this year, and there are still all those Delta Integrale fans around the world who would love to own a Lancia. Alfa Romeo is planning on going back to U.S probably in 2009, after 13 years of absence. Maseratti turnd a profit for the first time in 17 years in 2007, and is now building and selling about 3,000 cars a year and plans to increase that to 10,000. Fiat has never had it this good...

When Berlusconi is appointed as Chief Executive of Lancia, then I will believe it.

Considering how ugly the new Lancia Delta is, maybe its better they stay out of rallying ;)

For now he's Chief Executive of Italy, so no big difference! :D

IMHO, Alfa Romeo would make more sense as a 2nd Fiat F1 team, their model lineup is in competition with the manufacturers already in F1

Well, I have said it in that other thread and I say it again:

Lancia buygin Toro Rosso makes perfect sense. Lancia is a financialy secure profitable and rapidly expanding marque at this point. It is entering the UK market this year, a market in which F1 advertising is still rather important.

Everyone around here thinks VAG should enter F1. I think VW and Audio are established brands around the world that can't really benefit much from F1 advertising. Skoda and Seat are also Europe-only and benefit more from Europepean competitions. Lancia on the other hand, is a global brand which can use some marketing to restore its brand across the world, and what better way than to use F1?

man, audi would be the perfect entrant, or peugot, but I'll take anyone commited to winning and maintaing a quality F1 team. It would be terrible if the series were down to 18 cars

My apologies dude.. I didnt see it on the post list..

I always thought Lancias image was more suited for the WRC.. but Alfa?, now that would make more sense to me.
