Because of NASCAR's bans on certain types of sponsorship, it is expected a major press conference in Boston will be held Thursday.

München-based Osram GmBH will be the new sponsor of the #31 to replace AT&T, banned by Sprint Nextel and NASCAR under sponsorship prohibitions imposed in 2003.

What is AT&T? Cingular? I would understand if they banned tobacco(I think it is already, don't see any Marlboro/Camel/Gauloises cars around(pun! :p : )), did they ban it when Winston was the main sponsor?

But this is pathetic. Just shows that for NA$CAR, money is the primary thing and racing is secondary, at best. Booo!

its wrong to ban tobacco advertising  I know there are people here who disagree, but you have a right not to pay attention and buy a product just cause you see it. I've seen the "Marlboro" sponsorships but never smoked them. why should alcohol be allowed then to sponsor cars, people die everyday from alcohol poisoning.

Damn, I re-read my post and I had left out an important note. Yes, alcohol ads should be banned too. Look at "The Sponsor Thread" under WRC section, there is more talk about the subject.

Anyway, I think NASCAR still is one of the healthiest racing series when it comes to sponsorship - aside from alcohol, there are no "bad" sponsors - and I haven't seen Office or Home Depot advertised anywhere else, or Du Pont(what is it at all??) or Sharpie(loved the #97 Sharpie look).

Viagra was the last bad sponsor outside of Alcohol, sex drugs should be banned

Wireless telephone companies cannot advertise in the NNCS under the ten-year agreement between Nextel and NASCAR signed June 19, 2003. A grandfather clause states any wireless telephone company in the sport as of June 19, 2003 may continue with their present team. However, they cannot move teams or change identity. They must leave upon such, and this is exactly what has happened here -- AT&T's purchase of BellSouth, and the relabeling of their wireless telephone services under The New AT&T (the former Southwestern Bell) violates the NASCAR-Sprint agreement, under terms of the agreement as mentioned by Messrs. France and Forsee.

This does not affect the AT&T sponsorship of the AT&T 250 Busch race in West Allis, Wisconsin, because that is not in the Nextel Cup Series.

DISCLAIMER: BobbyC holds shares in Alltel and Sprint Nextel in his portfolio.

Winston wouldn't let anyone else sponsor NASCAR. Then 1998 came and the rule was that a tobacco company could only have sponsorship in one racing series. Now I think all out door advertising is banned.

American Telephone and Telegraph, the Company started by Alexander Graham Bell, aka the guy who invented the telephone. Cingular was a GSM based wireless carrier co-owned by baby Bells SBC and Bell South. SBC and Bell South are now reintegrated into AT&T and the Cingular name is going away.

SHame that Cingular is gone, I liked the look of that car. That said, I get why NEXTEL wants to keep things to themselves, they are paying a LOT of money for those rights.

As for booze or Ciggies....I am a libertarian at heart, I am against the banning of Ciggie ads on cars or anywhere else while the Government is quite happy to tax the profits and tax the smokes directly. If smoking is so horrible ban it. IT is horrible, but no one is given a gun to the head to start. I figure it is Darwin's theory at work...

BTW, classy of you to have the disclaimer Bobby C, It really wouldn't change your attitude, but you admit that you have a slight bias in the proceedings and you felt that was important. I wish other posters would get take that stand at times.

Cingular could stay if they wanted but AT&T bought Cingular and they would like to change the name to AT&T.
The agreement between Nascar & Nextel will not allow that name change.
So Cingular will leave for now.

Sylvania will be a welcome change & the car should look good too. :D

hmm, and here i though Autozone was done sponsoring cars after leaving ppc. interesting that this is the second time a sponsor(with Roadloans being the first) has left a smaller tieres Nascar team to align themselves with a team involved with Kevin Harvick.
