With rain forcast tomorrow and thursday teams could be looking to get up to speed very quickly and be preparing for Qualifying early incase the rest of the weeks practice does get washed out.

I think we might see high 226's/low 227's today.

what I do expect is a lot of laps today

Yup, more than likely but until a car goes through tech for qualifying then it is meaningless.
Speeds in practice are set sometimes to upset others into making changes to their set ups that cause teams to get farther away from where they need to be.

Not so much today as yesterday but still there and still done. Always look for the weak team that ends up in the top 5 for speed on a day. There are reasons for that and none involve finding it and being competitive.

with more cars this year and the greater need to practice incase of wash outs... my guess would be at least 2000 laps today in total.

just for S&G I peeked at 2003...

day 1 look rainshortened (anyone remembe?)
29 drivers...only 697 laps with Sharp running a lap at 228.7

but Day 2
saw 32 drivers...1438 laps...or 44.9 per
and Tora Takaigi :) running a 229.019

so if we see 35 on track at 50 laps per thats 1750

I'm going with between 1700 and 1800

we shall see

Is there a master list somewhere showing everyone who is going to try and qualify?

It would be fun to start a thread asking everyone to name who will not make it.

entrant list is here:- http://www.indy500.com/images/pdf/2008_entrylist.pdf

So no Jay Howard, Jamie Camera (crash), Larry Foyt or Buddy Lazier today. I think everyone else on the entry list ran today.

Probably the top dozen speeds all got help from each other somewhat. They say just another car or two on track, even on the opposite straight, can get the air swirling enough for 1/2 mph increase. A dozen or more cars are +1 mph. If the timing's right, a fast car catching a fast pack +1.5-2mph over what the single car qualifing can do.

Aye. Will Power is the rookie that has impressed me the most.
