When I learned that I would have a talk with Maria Obraztsova about the “Rolf Pustoshka” rally I once again checked results and listed final protocols. I recollected words from the splendid film “Pokrovskiye Vorota” – “To catch Savransky? It is a Utopia!” But it seems, Sirs, that it is not a Utopia. For a young and gifted lady pilot it might soon become a goal. And to my mind she will emphatically press for it though the name of a person “to be caught” will not be Savransky.

Experiments happen to be unsuccessful.

I have heard a lot and a couple of times had a chance to watch how Andrey Zhigunov and Igor Ter-Oganesyants approach preparation and tooling of a car before a race. They test it on pavements resembling the one to be run on. Andrey mercilessly drives himself, a car, mechanics, changes transmission’s units, adjusts suspension. He strives to remove anything which can lead to a loss of precious fractions of seconds on special stages.

On May 24-25 near the city of Saint-Petersburg in the recreational zone of Sestroretsk there was held the ninth round of the Russian Rally Cup. This rally is one of the oldest in the country. For the first time it was held back in 1984 under the name of “Brass horseman”. This year the participants were to cover 220 km 80 of which fell at 14 special stages.

The track of the “Viraj” (“Turn”) rally is located in Rostov region 120 km to the north from Rostov city near the miner's town of Gukovo. 80 % of it had been built, the rest are roads of general use.

Every year we have two big rallies in Gukovo: one round of Russian rally cup and one round of national championship. The distance is very hard, bright, and very comfortable for spectators: from some places you can see three stages at once! And the whole region, where stages are situated, covers 10 to 10 kilometers. As someone here knows, RallyRUS travels from rally to rally with our legendary Nakhapetobus - Chevrolet Sport Van G20 (1988, 5.7 litres of course). I've bought it 4 years ago, worked a little bit with car, and then we went 160 000 km in Russia and Estonia.

On June 12 the 2-d round of the 2008 classic cars rally championship was held near Moscow. Only original cars produced before 31.12.1970 were allowed to participate. Cars produced later were also allowed but only as participants and outside the frames of qualification.

After 9 years brake F1 on water returned to Saint-Petersburg. In the nicest place - in the city center on Neva river - on Saturday there was held round of the world championship. One team from Saint-Petersburg joint the competition, and Stanislav Kurtsenovsky took the 7th place in the race.

If to speak about Russian rallies - with great pleasure, especially looking forward WRC candidate in Novorossijsk (26-28.09) - it is the best rally to look. Why? Temperatures are 25-30, water in Black sea 21-23 degrees, so watching rally - swimming - watching rally - swimming... and so on, very nice. All hotels are empty, because all tourists go home in the end of September. Niciest landscapes, mountains up to 500 metres, WRC candidate round and... the best Russian wine from Abrau-Durso ... Mmmm, wonderful rally!

But - we have 3 rounds to go before Novorossijsk. The farest round from Saint-Petersburg - rally Southern Urals 2008, 3000 km. Graver rally, mountains, stones on the road (yes, again as in Vyborg). But! One very interesting detail! I don't know if our IRC Rally Russia could help to take the decision :) , but one rallyteam from France (!!!) is going to start in Southern Urals rally with their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo7! The names of heroes are Emmanuel GUIGOU, Official driver for Renault in French gravel championship, but here, in Russia, he will be there with a Mitsubishi, and his co-driver Gaetan Houssin. It was great idea: for the first time in history I have chance to write new page of rally story "The adventures of Frenchmen in Russia"! :)

It will take few days for me to become ready to start to Satka - I think, we'll go by our ChevyVan, and it needs some works before crossing 6500 km in one week. Comfortable bed, travel kitchen, even small bowl - we are ready to adventures! :)

I've returned home from South Urals rally, RusRC round. It took few days to take best photos and to make my mega-ural-gallery. So, it's ready. Big pity not to meet our French friends on the rally - the competition was wonderful. Far? Yes, 1700 km from Moscow to East, but for what is life if not to seek adventures? 2500 km from Saint-Petersburg to Satka I've done in 3 days alone, sleeping in my Taurus Wagon and in small motels...

Anyway 5500 km behind. I did it!

Where excatly was the Ural rally? I'm currently in Ekaterinburg, I've been here all August and I can't believe I missed a rally so close to me?

It was not so close to E-burg (as they call the city) - in half a thousand km to the South, in the town of Bakal (you can find it on the map, it is situated in few kilometres from M5 federal road, right in the middle between Ufa and Chelyabinsk...

No matter - next round will be in Gukovo (Rostov-na-Donu region) on 5-7 of September. The best rally for spectators: deep fords through the rivers, jumps, sharp turnes... and songs playing guitar sitting near the fire drinking beer under the bottomless night sky... So, it's very nice rally, and I'm starting there on the 1st of September.

But of course the best rally to see is Novorossiysk (26-28 of September). Unbelievable rally on the Black Sea, when water is 22 and air 25... And just the next weekend after Novoross - rally Tuapse (in 200 km, also on the Black sea). Two weeks of rallying on the seaside? It's dream, and I'm going to do it reality for myself and my family and friends.

Drift. Absolutely new kind of autosports in Russia. Rather difficult, rather interesting fot rally drivers and situated not far from home. :) But - only in the summer... Timofey Kosharny took part in 4 races in Finland this year. The results aren't so good, but he's professional driver, and we hope next year... :)

So some photos from the last summer race in Saint-Petersburg - drift, held on 29.09.08. It started in the evening, it was too dark, and I had to switch ISO 3200 in my camera (because it's not good idea to take pictures in the dark with flash from 100 metres. “Avtomir (Auto world) Saint-Petersburg” rally held on September 20 in Priozersk district of Leningrad region was the 14 round of the Russian Rally Cup and the seventh final round of the championship of the North-Western Federal Region. For the crew of Boris Fedotov/Alexey Orlov the race was successful: second place in the absolute, champion’s title of the North-Western Federal Region, a chance to struggle for prize places in the Cup of Russia in the last round to be held in Tuapse on October 4-5.

Oncoming familiarization in Tuapse: pro and con.

Additional regulations of “Tuapse 2008” rally: “At familiarization with the track an oncoming traffic of participants on special stages … is permitted. During the familiarization with the said stages participants have to be extra careful”.

A rally week-end next week which closes the Cup series of 2008 season and the nine rounds’ “Rolf Cup” has already caused numerous disputes in Internet which mainly referred to technical requirements for cars.However the race’s regulations contain one more unusual decision. At that opinions of sportsmen about it greatly differ.

Alex, can You tell us something more about Rally Novorossijsk? I can see that only few drivers reached finish and that there are two N3 cars on the podium! What happened to Novikov, Vertunov and others?

Once again the morning wasn't lucky for the two pre-event favorites, who had re-started today under SupeRally rules. Andrey Zhigunov showed only 5th result and finished the stage with developing problems in the transmission of his Lancer, very uncertain if he could continue driving at good pace. The crew of 5-times Russian champions lost another 6 minutes on the next stage, but failed to make it to the finish of SS9 because of a broken driveshaft. Evgeniy Novikov was planning to attack so that he could climb as high as possible to stay in touch with Zheludov in the fight for the drivers' title. Unfortunately, he first went off on SS7, but was able to return on the road and complete the stage. Surprisingly, Evgeniy's experienced Australian co-driver Dale Moscatt handed their time card away to stewards, but at the same time Evgeniy repaired the car and ordered Dale to take the card back. But while they were tackling the next special stage, a command from the HQ came that according to the FIA general prescriptions crew #3 must give the time card back at the finish of SS8. The only unpleasant accident happened on SS7, when four teenagers on a quadrocycle found the way to avoid marshals and appear on the route. Then they moved towards the coming car of German Formanyuk. The experienced driver couldn't avoid the accident and hit the quadrocycle. The teenagers were slightly injured, this proving a warning for spectators, that the safety rules must be strictly obeyed. After the incident the stage was run as a road section. "

Russian Rally Championship. Final – “Avto-Alliance Velikiye Luki 2008” rally.

Rallies in Pskov region are well known to sportsmen in Russia for their wide gravel roads. Here rounds of the Cup, of the Championship and of the Clubs’ rally cup are being held. For a long time local roads have been known as a “test for nerves”. The winner here is a pilot who doesn’t reduce speed and doesn’t make mistakes at crazy tempo.

Lately we witness the development of motor sport in Russia. Autodromes are being built, a round of the world circular series WTCC is to be held in Russia by 2010. Recently there was held the round of the Russian Rally Championship which received the status of a race-candidate to the WRC (Novorossiisk rally Russia 2008).

Because of the overlapping dates of the next stage of Russian and Ukrainian rally championships crew of Alexander Zheludov and Irina Kolomeytseva faced the problem: which race to choose? On the one hand, the crew early wins Russian drivers’ championship, so they could miss the final stage in Russia's Pskov region. On the other – “Moscow-Odessa” crew has nothing to loose in Ukrainian championship, so the price of rally «Chernivtsi-600» was very low too.

XII RallyRUS international rally photo contest 2008!

So, the great rally season of 2008 is over. Engines stopped roaring on tracks of national championship, prize places are drawn, winners and champions’ names became known. The time has come for a final rally photo contest, for recollection of the most thrilling moments of races.

The time to select the best of those who stand, sit or lie along special stages under hail of stones and dust from cars rushing by, under rain, freezing in cold and melting in hot weather waiting for hours just to take an instant photo. So, dear rally photographers: here is your hour of triumph!

We invite to our photo contest not only Russian authors but foreign photographers as well. In any case it has already become a good tradition – in the tenth photo contest authors from 8 countries had shown their best works!

I think I can open one of our top secrets for 2009 season. We've alreade started to develope our new project.

As you know, Evgeny Novikov is 18 years old. And in Russia most of rallylovers and spectators (and drivers, if to be honest) are 30 and older. So, the difference is one generation... So we decided, using all our possibilities, to start new professional project - RallyRUS Junior Club, for new rally generation from 12 to 25. Using their "language", using social networks, guitars, DJs and heavy metal music. Telling young people about motorsports in stories from rallies, about travelling, adventures, heroism in normal life... and in the same time - about technics, what is turbo, why the car drifts on gravel surfaces and why we see drift in rally but not in tarman events, what is NOx and how it works in the engine... And so on. :)

By the way, if Estonians have their first Young Rally Championship (for drivers aged 12-18, 4 rounds through the year), why not to have in Russia first Rally Educational Project? I spoke to legendary drivers, and they are ready to tell stories for young people in new project... Everything wonderful!!

Now I think - to start the project from the very beginning both in English and Russian or only in Russian it will be enough? :) I think that young man (or lady, why not?), reading stories in interesting way about rallying and other categories of motorsports, will become interested to try driving by him or herself, to visit races, to write news or to take photos. Maybe to complete musik, or to read something more about brave people, maybe classics?

Oh, I said too much. There is only one thing to do now - just to do this. Well, I like it!

RallyRUS 2008 Video&Slideshow Contest.

From the school age everyone knows that a human being has five senses for perception of outward things. Announcing our traditional annual photo contest we had a thought – why not to give spectators a chance to enjoy music along with viewing pleasure. More information we receive about outward things more colorful becomes the world!

Here we go. Alex Camel, the known musician, arranger and DJ from Saint-Petersburg, has specially created for this project a musical composition in break beat style. Andrey Yushin has found and presented us a fragment of on-board recording of his crew’s performance in Novorossiisk. The voice of Natalia Selivanova reading pace-notes in combat run has been recorded on sound track of a composition which served as a basis of slide-show made from contest photos. We liked the idea and decided to give an outlet not only to your talent of a photo artist but of a producer, script writer and sound technician.

20000 km around Russia. A little bit of lyrics.

20 000 km – that was the distance covered in the vast expanses of Russia by our Pine tree this year. It is 3 years old, grows little by little and is reading for future trips.

How the idea was born? Perhaps, it was a wish to have a company during long travels or probably it was a reminiscence of a revolutionary interior of Citroen prototype designed by Vladimir Pirozhkov - in brief, once upon a time I wanted to plant a tree right inside my van. Its space permitted that without affecting its passengers and photo equipment capacity.

He's fast, agressive, but what we have today? 2007 Estonian Rally Championship, leading up to final Saaremaa rally - and off, the 2nd place in series. 2007 Russian Rally Champ - the same story. Leading up to final Novorossijsk 07 rally - and OFF, and again 2nd place. 2008 Russian Rally Championship - leading, and again 2nd. Tendention?

Good for them, specially Dale as he is really nice guy who deserves a break. Curious to see how they do, it will be a fine line between going fast and staying on the road and keeping the car more or less in 1 piece (but hey that is the definition of RALLY) we all know Evgeny can go fast but tends to be quite hard on his cars. But maybe this C4 is what he needs. Good for WRC also

Leading up to final Novorossijsk 07 rally - and OFF, and again 2nd place. 2008 Russian Rally Championship - leading, and again 2nd. Tendention?

To finish first you are first to finish, as is well known. We'll see.

"Happy Crisistmas" is over, and we've started 2009 reports work. As soon as we'll solve some financial difficulties, I'll return to this project. It was my dream for few last years, and now the time came to do it :) I think it will be possible in summer. As minimum programme - special tests in Estonia. As maximum - one rally. If to take a look on the idea, it's absolutely impossible. BUT such tasks makes good challenge, and it is very interesting to do it. We'll see and try :)

Breaking news: «Rural rally».

In the Rostov region agricultural machines for one day turned into the racing equipment. There was held the tractors’ race. With compulsory program and demonstration runs: one of the participants of this “rural rally” has shown how a sport bolid can be built out of a “Belarus” tractor.

On May 16 the first Russian Subaru Festival - «Suba-Fest’09» - was held in Moscow.

It was noisy and crowdy on Saturday morning on the grounds of Sergey Uspensky’s Academy of Speed – the first Russian Subaru Festival had been held over here.

An idea born in the STI-Club – the club of the brand’s worshippers – had been picked up by Sergey Uspensky’s Academy of Speed, by the Subaru Motor Russia company and by the manufacturer of Subaru sport cars - «Uspensky Rally Technics» company. With their support the SubaFest turned to be a real big holiday for all worshippers of «six stars». It was the first time in Russia when so many various modifications of Subaru Impreza cars assembled together as it was at the festival in Moscow on Saturday.
