]According to Chryby Auquier had gearbox problem and Kopecký had puncture during first run.
We saw kopecky passing with a puncture, we also saw Toth stopping in stage apparantly out of fuel. Then Voullioz left the shakedown (in the middle of it), also with problems aparantly.

Two hours left to go :D

Unfortuneately, having a rendezvous at the doctor at 6.00pm today, I'll miss the live of both SS1 and 2(at least) :(

Madeira: Maybe better to say MG is doing better than expected so far :) When we look at the cost (from Bill Gwynne advertisement) which is a third of Peugeot or Fiat and a half of VW, it doesn't look bad.

I wish guys from Bill Gwynne and René Georges all the best to reach the finish!

Kopecký said after shakedown that it would be very difficult for him as he is first time in Ypres and the roads are very specific and very hard for orientation. He said that local knowledge of cutting corners is a big advantage too.

MG Rally
28th June 2008, 00:09
Mark & Rory actually finshed Stage 6 in 9th Overall & 9th in Class N4 on 48m 46.1s - an excellent drive in a 'budget' S2000 car driven by someone on only his thrid visit to Ypres!

However, I am led to believe that the MG had a fuel leak and by my calculations has had a 1m 50s road penalty added to their time. This unfortuantely drops the car down to 24th Overall at the end of Leg 1!

Stage Notes after SS3 - Mark Higgins - "No petrol anymore at the regroup! They had to push the MG S2000 for 2 kilometres to get to Ypres."

The team will have to be ready for a charge tomorrow, and also hope that there are a few retirements if they are to salvage anything from this rally! They must be absolutely gutted!

Sola had some gearbox troubles.
Travaglia struggled with setup.
Casier said the car is great after setup change in first servise but that his disadvantage is lower top speed as he is running short gearbox and most of Peugeots medium gearbox (ca 168 versus 175 km/h).

from irc.com
Spain´s Dani Sola (pictured) has been forced to retire from the Ypres Rally following a bizarre accident with Dutch Mitsubishi driver Jasper van den Heuvel. At the beginning of SS11, van den Heuvel was preparing to begin the stage when Sola - who was running late - collided with him before the stage start. ...
The impact damaged the front suspension of Sola's Abarth Grande Punto, meaning that he was unable to continue. Van den Heuvel's Lancer also sustained some damage - but he was at least able to continue.

Statement of Kopecký team in short:

They hit an iron-concrete pilar almost in the middle of the road behind the corner. The pillar catapulted the car in the air breaking oil sump guard and damaging engine. Crew was unhurt, medical service with hellicopter was on the place before the crew left the car. The pillar was broken into smaller pieces by the impact.

IRC officials gave onboard video of Nicolas Vouilloz to team kopecký to show that there was nothing like that on the road before. Team Kronos after seeing onboards and talking to Nicolas Voilloz also gave a statement that Nico's driving couln't get such a big concrete pillar on the road.

Team Kopecký doesn't want to make early closing as the whole thing is under investigation.

Josti
28th June 2008, 23:28
Is the Polo faster than the Abarth as of today ?

I don't think so immediately. René Georges is a Belgian based team, so I'm not surprised by this result. They do much of their testing in Belgium. Plus Casier has more knowledge of these roads than say Basso and especially Alén.

On coverage, Casier himself admitted that the Polo misses topspeed against the Peugeot's and Fiat's. I think on gravel, they wouldn't be this close.

Mirek
28th June 2008, 23:54
Josti: You're not right completely. They missed top speed agains Peugeots only. Fiats go on short gearbox practicaly everywhere. It is because weak engine of Fiat (which is weaker than VW, that was confirmed by Loix and Czopik last year). Even last year in Finland Alén was going on short gearbox with a top speed of 168 km/h!

Compared to that Peugeots usualy uses medium gearbox. We compared that also on rally Hustopeče in Czech champ. where there Béreš's Fiat was evidently weaker than Kopecký's Peugeot (even by sight). From GPS top speed we know that Kopecký was on medium and Béreš on short gearbox. Even though Peugeot was much beter in slow corners and handbrake turns.

pucky54
29th June 2008, 00:32
In Ypres I noticed an important thing out of the tight 90° corners. In the same time the Fiats shift up a gear, the Peugeots shift up two gears. The Peugeots are more aggressive out of the corners, the Fiats seemed to drive on low-rev out of those corners.

Is the Polo faster than the Abarth as of today ?I think it always was :) (faster, but not reliable - which changed luckily :) )

Mirek
29th June 2008, 10:04
pucky54: That's all about torque. If You don't have torque, Your rpm rises slower and all the acceleration is slower. Such problem is visible on first gear only as other gears are quite close to one another (and You use power peak), only on first one You can't shift down and need to use lower rpm.

I don't think the Fiat is a lot slower, but it definitely is slower and consistently so. I think Peugeot had a bit of a driver advantage in Belgium, so Russia will be very interesting to see how the Pug drivers match up to Alen.

The level of competition is so high in IRC that even a small difference adds up to a bad result for Fiat.

It looks like Patrick Snijers enjoyed so much the race and the car that he's planning to run IRC09 with Kronos :)

I'm also back from Ypres, where i was for almost the whole week. We've seen an awesome rally, with a more than deserved winner. Fast Freddy did make the difference on friday when he did almost all the fastest times, except on the Langemark stage where Kopecky went off and they showed yellow flag, so Freddy calmed down a litlle. That is the reason he didn't make fastest time there, but only for a few tenth's of a second. He controlled the rally on saturday, alltough there was that gearbox problem and he lost fifth gear. But the guys off Kronos did great job and changed the gearbox without any penalty taken. After that Freddy cruised to victory.
Also great rally of Voullioz and off-course Rosetti who managed to go from 11th to 3th overall, taking a lot of fastest times on saturday. It is a pitty that he doesn't do all rounds off the championship, but i guess that is good news for Voullioz and Loix.
I can also tell you that we had an awesome afterparty in the tent of the Freddy Loix Fanclub, those guys did really do a fantastic job, including last-minute-made T-shirts. It was an awesome party and i am still carrying the consequenties off it with me. :) :D ;)

Yes, I was there, but only for a while, when I was waiting for opening Parc Ferme to pick up a car. In time, when you left that party, we were leaving Ypres, because our way home was veeeeeeeeery long.

we have an option to go to Madeira, but the problem is that Bernd can not have his regular co-driver so he will probabely skip the event, we go for sure to the Barum rally (maybe with 2 cars) , and normally we do San Remo and Valais. we also have some cars availeble for other drivers so we also look at those options to continue in the IRC. i think we showed that the car has potential, even when it was in Belgium, you still have to be the faster one in the end and we believe we can have some good positions in the other irc events....

No, the only way to do Madeira is with the regular co-driver, you need him to have a good result in Madeira.... Budget is NOT the problem...

i think you need to find a co-pilot for Jan Molder in WRC Finland because it is there that Bernd Casiers co-pilot is co-driving with the Swift S1600.. and because of that he can not be in Madeira !
