I've had to ban a stack of members for having what looks like multiple accounts. However some of these are members of long standing so please get in touch with me (or another mod) if you think your ban is not correct.

Who do we contact if you're (you are) using the wrong spelling of your (belonging to you)? ;)

(I know Marcus Brigstocke put me in Room 101 last week; I don't care...)

 I doubt you can base anything on ip addresses as mine and Alfa Fans are probably the same as we're both on campus at Lancaster uni...

The bans were actually as a result of a report I did though :p

BTW it's only one dodgy account ;)

We do use IP addresses to help us, but you have to use them intelligently. Often they can be used to confirm or deny a suspicion.

I wonder why the IPs weren't disguised ?

What the heck are you on about?

You would have thought if the person was doing something they felt was wrong,
they would have disguised their IPs so it wouldn't have all be shown as the same IP.

Curious, isn't it ? http://www.motorsportforum.com/forums/images/icons/tongue-anim.gif

How do you know they disguised their IP's? You're making an assumption there :)

Funny that I should get this feedback this morning. More multiple accounts?

Daniel, it looks like a consensus.

Perhaps there is a movement at work there ...
maybe everyone will be giving you bad reputation with the word "rat" in the comments.

As MattL says, IP addresses aren't conclusive proof of anything. They can only make things look more suspicious, or not, as the case may be.

In this case there was no problem.

I had a very worrying case when I was moderating another forum.

A young man and his girlfriend were frequent posters and very well known on the forum. They were friendly and befriended a few members including one vulnerable young girl about 12 years of age. However, there was something about the relationship that just didn't ring true.

One day, the Boy was posting from his work, describing how his boss didn't understand him, and the girl from home when I noticed that both were emanating from the same IP address. We did some digging and it looked like it was one man who was trying to befriend young kids for purposes I would rather not consider.

He was reported and went away.

This is an extreme example but one that offers a reason to not have multiple accounts. It allows people to falsly manipulate situations.

On a serious note though I never thought of that as a serious problem. I think if there was a couple on this forum and they started befriending a younger member I'd definitely ask the younger member to talk to someone trustworthy who's met both people and can confirm that it's for real and not just some freak trying to do the wrong thing

Fortunately, it wasn't the busiest forum in the world and we had time to notice these things. However, on a busy forum such as this one, I bet the Mods have to spend most of their time dealing with silly complaints than doing anything proactive.

Daniel: There can be serious problems. Elsewhere in/on the Internet, this is what we discovered on another discussion group.

Information was brought to the attention of the Mods that a List member was not who or what they claimed to be. A decision was made to verify the facts, to research and check each and every claim and either confirm or deny the allegations.

This is what we discovered. In November/December 2004 <name deleted> generated an email asking for donations for Jack and Jill (not their real names), who were claimed to be Katrina victims. It was all a big lie.

We found arrest records early as 1970, and as recent as 2004. There were multiple arrests for violation of probation. There were similar records for the rest of the family. It appears they are a family that cons and steals. The person in question is a convicted felon, has served time in state prison.

Jack and Jill used a PI to report the scam using their names, and the person in question had his probation violated, sending him back to jail.

I appreciate Mark's caution in dealing with curious or suspicious accounts.
