Benny Parsons, who charmed television audiences with his folksy demeanor as much as he impressed fans with his ability as a driver, died Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following complications from lung disease. He was 65.

The former self-proclaimed Detroit taxi driver-turned-NASCAR racer never forgot his humble rural North Carolina roots, and it came through in every aspect of his life.

A sad day in the sport!

I was afraid this was going to happen ...
I reported earlier that he was in ICU ...
there had been no update for several days ...
I didn't want to post what I expected to happen ...

It truly is a sad day in NASCAR, we have lost a friend. :bigcry:

Am numb and distraught after hearing this terrible news. While I didn't know too much about BP's brilliant racing career, I have found him to be fantastic in his play by play role - both knowledgable and funny which is a difficult skill to have.
This has been an extremely tough start to the year for the NASCAR community, losing Bobby Hamilton last week and now BP. I just wish could find a cure for this terrible disease.
The word legend is overused but Benny Parsons was a legend.
RIP BP.

Just inside the Pearly Gates, there was a meeting and a long talk. Wouldn't you just love to have heard this conversation?

Benny Parsons was hands down the best "colour" guy in NASCAR. I enjoy DW and Larry, but Benny had a good way about him, and in his ESPN Days he hooked me for good on the way they covered NASCAR. I will miss Benny, and his humour, his insight, and the way he carried himself.

Benny Parsons was one of the true gentleman of the sport, and his passing is too soon.

Rest in Peace Benny, and know in heaven, you will have a lot of friends waiting for you.....

A friend of mine called me while I was on my way in to work tonight. All I could think of when he told me was "OH, MAN!!!" just the way BP himself would have said it. As much as it hurt to hear it, I actually cracked a smile.
We'll miss you BP, very much. I guess God needed a color guy to broadcast the Heaven 500 this year. Say hi to Dale Sr, Davey, Neil, and Adam for me...
Godspeed, BP

The races won't be the same without Benny, his smile, his knowledge, and his great sense of humor. Benny will be missed by all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

BP and the rest of the ESPN gang are what helped hook me on NASCAR. RIP BP, great broadcaster and a great driver.
