I guess those who blast my photographic memory should see what I see and remember what I remember.

In 1958, Tony Bettenhausen won the National Title and in 1978 Tom Sneva won the National Title, both in USAC. They both accomplished something that only they did outright while winning their title?

Not win a race that year?

We have a winner.

Tony did it in the following cars

Hardwood Door #35 Kurtis 4000D Offy 6 races
Jones & Maley #33 Epperly Offy Indianapolis
John Zink #5 Watson Offy 6 races

Tom did in the PC6 Cosworth #1

Actually it is easy if you were there. Some questions are easy if you know the sport. Like this:

The most wins in a National Champion season by a driver is 10. It was done twice, who did it and what years?

gofastandwynn

OK then, lets go with a true test of driving skill.

There used to be National Championship events in Indianapolis:
The 500 at the Speedway, a road race at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the Hoosier Hundred at the Fairgrounds dirt oval.

Who is the only person to win all 3 races in the same year?

I am by no means promoting cheating, and I'm sure there are enough honourable folks here to abide by the rules of this thread to keep it interesting, but I am promoting this site as the definitive place to go regarding AAA, USAC, CART, CC and IRL stats. It's where I go to settle bets! :)

A sample of the labour of love this site must be for it's creator:

I love these "purely from memory" questions. I knew Tom Sneva didn't win in '78. That was part of the reason Roger Penske replaced him... along with being difficult to work with and Bobby Unser becoming available. Tom used to have some real disagreements with George Bignotti while with the Bignotti-Cotter team, but I was a huge Sneva fan in spite of it all.

I'm no Donald Davidson (who is?), but I can name every winner of the 500.

Single race. It was later than that in a Kuzma that was built in 1951 and Foyt raced it at one point.

Here is another won Jim Clark won one race in a Lotus 29 at Milwaukee in 1963. In 1964 the Lotus 34 won two races with Parnelli. In 1965 Jimmy won the 500 in a 38 and A.J. won the Trenton 150, 200 and the Phoenix 200.

There is one more win for a Lotus after 1965, who won it, where, what year and what model?

Another gem in 1962 Bill Forbes was delivered a brand new Watson Offy Roadster. That car made the 500 from 1962 through 1965. What did it accomplish that no other car did in only 4 appearances?

Actually no, in the first year, 1962 the car had 4th locked up when its magneto failed, Clark "Shorty" Templeman got back out and finished 11th.

You are close and remember for the 1965 race it was owned by Sid Weinberger.

Who won the last National Championship Race in a 251.9 Offy? Where and what year?

In 1969 on a Monday because the Saturday date got rained out. In my presences, Mario Andretti driving the Clint Brawner-Jim McGee wrenched 1951 Kuzma (Updated) 251.9 Drake Engineering Offy, #2 STP OIL TREATMENT Spl, pulled into Victory Lane. Little did anyone know the engine with its roots back to the 1930 would never win another National Championship Race.

It was the 24 win and last for this car. Bob Sweikart, Jimmy Bryan, Eddie Sachs and Mario won races in the car.

1963 Jim McElreath 6th Place 500 Miles 140.862
1964 Lloyd Ruby 3rd Place 500 Miles 144.320

Due to a rain out at Mosport, the race was run on a Saturday and Langhorne was run on a Sunday. So teams sent cars in two directions.
On that Sunday the Gene White #25 car was a Lotus-34 Ford with Dave Laycock modifications to it. This was the third 34 built in 1964 and was driven by Jim Clark at Trenton and the car went to Lindsey Hopkins and Bobby Marshman was killed in it at PIR in a tire test. The car disappeared from 1965- June of 1967, when it made its only appearance and won the 100 miler with Lloyd Ruby driving.

So that was the end of the Lotus as winners.

All you need to do is name the race track. (All tracks that
Indy/Champ/Big Cars ran on)
1. Al Unser Sr. crashed and when he got out of the car and
undid his helmet it broke into three pieces.
2. Al Keller, the last driver before Kyle Busch to win in a
foreign car, set a time almost 2 seconds faster than anyone
else in qualifying only to lose his life later that day in
the race.
3. Ronnie Buckman a F-1 driver, John Paul Jr. and Emerson
Fittipaldi won their first races there.
4. Bobby Rahal won his first race there.
5. Joe Leonard won 6 races in his career and won three races
there, all three were different events.
6. Mark Donohue won his first race there and it was the first
race run.
7. The first words of the winner in victory lane when he saw
the person holding the trophy was “I remember you from Death
Valley Days.”
8. Hector Rebaque won the first race there and it was win one
for Gerry Forsythe.
9. In 1973 this track had twin 150’s and the winners were
Foyt and Andretti.
10. Roger McCluskey won his first race there.
11. Sports Car driver George Follmer won his only race there
in a Cheetah/Chevy 335.
12. Peter Revson won a 100 mile heat at this track in a
Brabham-Repco.
13. Art Pollard won in a Plymouth at this track and the Indy
Cars did not go back for almost 30 years.
14. Danny Ongais won the race the last time they raced there,
outside the U.S.
15. Johnny Rutherford won his first race there and it was the
only time a Watson built rear engine car won a race.
16. Don Branson won his last Champ race there.
17. Bud Tingelstad won his only Champ race on this track.
18. This track had Al Unser win its only race on the National
Championship Trail.
19. Dick Atkins won his only race here.
20. Dan Gurney won the first race here and the Indy cars
would come back 34 years later.
21. Rick Mears won the last time the Champ Cars raced there
in 1983.
22. Teo Fabi won the first race at this track in 1983.
23. Bobby Unser won the first race and only race CART had
there.
24. Foyt won 6 Champ races on this track, 1960-61,
1964-1965, 1968-1969
25. Manual Ayulo won the last race held on this track in
1954. NASCAR still runs there.

Here is a good one from a thinking mans point of view.

Firestone is that all time winning product at the 500.

Roger Penske is the all time winningest car owner.

Foyt, Al Unser and Mears have the most wins as a driver.

Who has the most wins as a driver, engine supplier and an engine builder? 25 Total wins. One person and his "partner" has 24 wins.

His Son in Law has the most wins as a mechanic with 6.

You don't REALLY expect the lounger fan to answer any of these gems do you?
I mean come on, this is the home of the "self-victimization" is racing crowd, real racing history only began with the split EVERYTHING before that had no bearing on the "real racing" that these kids think is pertinent or relevant.

Hector Rebaque is the same to these people as Tommy Milton is to us and they could care less, which is fitting justice I guess seeing as how todays drivers care about equally for them. GO ask Memo.

18 as manufacturer of the Meyer-Drake Racing Engine.

Son in Law: George Bignotti

Some people like to talk about the days when a driver would show up at Indy without an assigned ride or a ride that after time in the car would not make the race. So he was off to hunt for a ride. Since many here would not appreciate the efforts of these drivers for various reasons I will tell a story of a 5' 4" 130 lbs driver who by trade was a salesman and a pilot. He made is first 500 in 1952 and went 193 laps in the Cental Excavating car. Then he made it from 1955 through 1966. He went the distance in 1959, 1960 and 1961. The years I want to look at are 1962 through 1966.
In 1962 he drove a Floyd Trevis Laydown that was 3 or 4 years old. Manhandled this car to a 146 average only to lose a magneto on the 38th lap.

In 1963 he drove a conventional UPRIGHT Roadster got it up to 148.5 but got wrecked on lap 112
http://www.indy500.com/photo/gallery.php?series_id=a:2:{i:0;i:1;i:1;i:6;}&track_id=4&searchType=freeText&freeText=Eddie%20Johnson&photo_id=13624
In 1964 he got the #84 Mickey Thompson Ford car that was brand new and was team mate to Dave MacDonald. He got in in at 152.9 in the 24th spot. They worked for hours to get it to run after the restart but 6 laps was it.
http://www.indy500.com/photo/gallery.php?series_id=a:2:{i:0;i:1;i:1;i:6;}&track_id=4&searchType=freeText&freeText=Eddie%20Johnson&photo_id=13605
In 1965 he qualified a car that is in another thread, a 1960 Watson/Offy and brought her home 10th. The oldest car in the race. One year one of the newest to the oldest in one year.
http://www.indy500.com/photo/gallery.php?series_id=a:2:{i:0;i:1;i:1;i:6;}&track_id=4&searchType=freeText&freeText=Eddie%20Johnson&photo_id=13639
In 1966 he qualified a former MG Liquid Suspension Car from 1965 with an Offy in it. Avoided the big wreck and soldiered home 7th in his last 500 start.
http://www.indy500.com/photo/gallery.php?series_id=a:2:{i:0;i:1;i:1;i:6;}&track_id=4&searchType=freeText&freeText=Eddie%20Johnson&photo_id=13895

He came back in 1967 but retired when rides appeared to have gotten worse. We lost him on a way back from a Sales Trip in 1974 near Cleveland, OH when he went down in bad weather.

His name Eddie Johnson. Those are drivers that many consider "field filler" but were truly the heroes of the third day.

Back to trivia. 4 500 winners did not make to the next 500 in those tough years.
Gaston Chevrolet in 1920
Joe Boyer in 1924
Ray Keech in 1929
George Robson in 1946

Which one only had 16 days to celebrate his trip into immortality?

Yes but so was Joe Boyer. Boyer and Robson died on the same date on the calender 22 years apart.

Howdy Wilcox was also killed at Altoona but well after his win. So Altoona got three winners.

Alexamateo
13th March 2008, 20:43
By the way I am defining it, JPM finished 10th in his last start at Fontana so he is not one, plus he's not a retired driver and he could concievably return just like Franchitti and Bordais.

Gil de Ferran retired after his victory in Texas so he is one I am thinking of although he could technically come back I suppose.

Some clues:

One retired in Victory lane.

One came out of retirement to run one more race and won.

Two died racing other series or other types of cars.

One scored a mild upset when the favorite dropped out.

BobGarage

Bob Finney. Only ever competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb... when it was a points paying event.

OK so there's 7 guys :D , actually more if you count people like Bernd Rosemeyer, who won the Vanderbilt cup in his only start in AAA. No, I am actually thinking of people who had at least a season or two of running races.

Dick Atkins

All three correct! Sam Hanks tearfully retired in Victory Lane @ Indy in 1957.

1910 Champ Ray Harroun came back to run the Inaugural Indy 500.

Dick Atkins was sadly killed at Ascot in a sprinter less than two weeks after winning on the Sacramento Mile. (The Polesitter for the same Sacramento event, Don Branson, was also killed in the same wreck at Ascot.)

There are two more that I know of and they are well known, one is an Indy 500 winner and the other a former National Champion.

Franck Lockhart, another one.
Actualy won his final 3 races. Cleveland, and two at Rockingham.

Then killed on the Beach.

There is your 500 winner.

I was just thinking of Rich Vogler who won the race he was killed in at Salem, IN.

I remember that race, I think they were showing it live on ESPN and Rich was supposed to make his NASCAR debut at Pocono the next day having already qualified. My dad was watching with me and said instantaneously "He's dead!" I wasn't so sure, and remembered my dad said the same thing to me after Ongais wrecked when we were in the stands at Indy (we were in turn 4), but unfortunately he was right.

Did Vogler cross the finish line and crash?, or did the scoring revert to the previous lap on the red flag and they declared him the winner? I don't remember.

Previously scored lap.

We are not thinking Ted Horn are we? No it wouldnt be him, Myron Fohr won the show before. Many people thought he was killed in a Sprint Car race but "Baby" was a Sprint/Champ Car. Mario had a ride in it in 1961 at a URC race with a Caddy in it.

There's another one I didn't know about. ChampcarStats shows him at Indy in 1954, but I am guessing it was a ceremonial lap and retirement a la Foyt in 1993.

I am still thinking of one other driver.

That's it! Foyt dominated a weakened USAC field, winning every race except Indy (finished 2nd) and the final USAC race that year @ Milwaukee when he dropped out with fuel pump problems. Still, it's great to go out a winner, no matter how it happens.

That's all I know of although there may be others like Lee Wallard I don't know about(but do now :D ). Who's got the next question? :)

I was there he drove the car that Janet drove at Indy. I was hoping that Foyt would win because the 200 was the only traditional race he never won. He finished second many times.

How about some Lee Wallard ones. Lee did something that was an accomplishment, when he was told of that he said a statement that would come true 23 years after his death. What were the two things?

Who drove Lee's car the rest of the year? He didn't want to drive it at Indy as he thought it wasn't competitive. He never won the 500.

What car had the smallest engine? 244 cubic inches, unblown when 270 unblown was the standard Meyer-Drake.

He was the first to finish in under 4 hours, and 23 years after he died, Bobby Rahal was the first to finish in under 3 hours. :s mokin:

Nobody will get these but this is a classic. Peter DePaulo was the first to win the 500 in under 5 hours and Lee was told in Victory Lane that he had did it in under 4 hours. He said, "I would like to meet the SOB that does it in under three!" That would be Bobby Rahal in 1986.

Who drove Lee's car the rest of the year? He didn't want to drive it at Indy as he thought it wasn't competitive. He never won the 500.

Tony Bettenhausen, he won Milwaukee, Langhorne, ran second at Darlington, even ran second in the Williams Grove Non-point "Black Sunday" race, Troy Ruttman won that, won Springfield, ran 10th at the Milwaukee 200, two wins at DuQuoin, a win at Syracuse, 4th at Detroit behind Bessie/Russo, winning Denver, San Jose and blowing a tire at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, the only race the car scored no points and a second at Bay Meadows, CA. Only Walt Faulkner in the Kuzma that would win the 1952 500 would beat the Belanger Kurtis/Meyer-Drake at Darlington and Milwaukee, Johnny Parsons in the Kurtis 4000 Meyer-Drake at Phoenix and Bay Meadows and Paul Russo and Basement Bessie at Detroit with Troy in the Kuzma he would win at Indy with at the "Black Sunday" race.
Obviously he won the Title and Murrell Belanger was the winning car owner. One heck of a year.

The winner, surprisingly. Read many years ago he had two broken shocks as the bricks were ripping up this lightweight little car.

Yes and even crashing on lap 40 the average speed was 170.261MPH. Pretty scary for narrow tires.

I heard it was real bad and the second race (Twin 100's) had many drivers say no so USAC designated it as Formula Libre and issued no points. Jim Rathmann won it again.

George Amick was RoY at Indy in 1958. How many Champ Car races did he win prior to driving his only 500?

He won three. He finished 8th in the points in 1955 with 630, 4th in 1956 with 1050 and two wins and a 3rd in 1957 with 1400 only 250 points behind Jimmy Bryan with a win.
He didn't join the series until the Milwaukee Mays and came home 7th in 1955.
At Indy in 1956 he had no ride missed the Milwaukee Mays race by being too slow so Langhorne was his first and he won it, leading the last 30 laps.
On November 12th, he led them all at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.
In 1957 he got bumped in the #4 Federal Engineering car but moved back to the Hopkins Dirt Car and won at Atlanta's Lakewood Red Mile leading the last 96 miles of the 100 miler.
In 1958 he drove Norm Demler's laydown Epperly from 25th to 2nd, RoY and went back to the Hopkins Lesvosky Dirt car for the season except for a ride in the Peter Schmidt Kuzma and a Leader Card Epperly at the Milwaukee 200 on loan from Norm Demler.
George, thanks to 800 points earned at the Speedway collected another 840 to finish second behind the also winless Tony Bettenhausen.

His last race in 1959 was in a Bowes Seal Fast Epperly Laydown #2, he was credited with 4th place in the only Daytona appearance of the Champ Cars.

Trenton, NJ in April of 1963. Foyt won in the Sheraton-Thompson Meskowski Dirt Car #2 and Lloyd Ruby sat on the pole in the J. Frank Harrison Lotus 18 Climax. Stirring duel between the good handling, underpowered Lotus and the handling but faster straight line, dirt car. Ruby, led in the corners and Foyt on the stretches.
