Not sure I can help ya... Maybe this might be worth moving to the driving and transport board later. Folks there are far more likely to know.

Insurance in the heavies world is not always about road risks, it's about goods in transit.

If you only carry sand & gravel, your payload won't have a great deal of value, therefore your insurance will be lower than someone who carries high value goods like industrial machinery, or consumer goods.

When I ran a 40tonner, with a payload insurance of up to £30K it was around £3000/yr, but that's gone up a fair bit since 1999. I think that's the sort of figure my brother was paying for his 18tonner just over a year ago (he's packed up now - had enough of earning less than someone who says "you want fries with that?")

Ballpark figures, something like £5000 for an 44T Artic with a fairly standard "general haulage" £30K cover, add something like £5 per thousand extra cover. And circa £3000 for an 18tonner.

Extra's to add - haz-chem, high value cargo's often carry a premium and are sometimes done on a per-load basis. Why insure your truck for carrying a 26tonne payload of Nokia N95's worth ££££££££s every day of the week when you may only carry one load of them a year.
I recall bruv taking a load of Kemppi welders (calm down Duane), and had to up his policy to cover £1M!!!!

There are specialist commercial vehicle insurance brokers out there who should be able to give you more accurate figures. Have a google!
