Gronholm, who claimed 30 wins during his hugely successful stint in the FIA World Rally Championship, is contesting the US-based series in a Ford Fiesta, which he took to first place on the season-opener in Charlotte last month.
Prior to this weekend’s second round at the Texas Motor Speedway, Gronholm said: “I am relishing the fight that I know is coming my way this weekend. It was great to kick off the year with a win, but that now makes me the man to beat in Texas.”
Not only will Gronholm be looking to maintain his advantage in the GRC title chase, he will also be bidding for a top 12 finish in order to secure an entry for the X Games event in Los Angles on 30 June, which the 44-year-old Finn says will only increase the level of competition in Texas.
“I know Tanner [Foust] ran me pretty close in Charlotte,” Gronholm was quoted as saying. “And Brian Deegan will want to be in LA after his mechanical problems two weeks ago, Ken Block will also want to get some more points on the board. And Liam Doran is back, he’ll be after more medals at the X Games, so I know this weekend will be hugely competitive. But that’s the way I like it.”
