Is it common in the UK to insure stuff like cameras?
I am sorry to hear that steve.. Sh*t happens.
If there isn't a chance of getting it back, you should just chalk it up to a life experience!
see read D-Type' post for an example of that
Wait till you have some cash and get another one, don't give up on photography just because of this incident.

Many homeowners insurance covers such things. My brother lost about $2000 worth of gear in a kayak incident and it was covered by his insurance.
Steve,
Life happens, and we all do something that makes us angry at ourselves at times. I do know the feeling but it's not worth losing sleep over either.
If you like photography, you'll get another camera sooner or later. If not you'll find something else to spend your money on.
One thing I've learned over the years is that no matter how little or how much money you have, there are always material things beyond our reach that we would like to have. But if we really want them, we make it happen somehow. And really there is no material thing that brings you happiness anyway, that comes for free.

Steve, check the lost/found section of whatever internet buy & sell is popular where you are (over here it's kijiji).
If it's not in there, post a lost add in same and hopefully someone will contact you.

Don't beat yourself over this, Steve. I know it pains one when you do something like that and you can't even remember how or what happened. But having driven off with everything from my coffee to my phone to my briefcase on top of my car (the brown liquid running down my windshield made me say, "Hey, where's my coffee???!!!), you get other things on our mind and you just forget what you're doing.
Use this an an opportunity to start saving for and then shopping for an even better camera.
