I've just found out that 2008 Monte Carlo did not start in Monte Carlo, but in Valence instead.
Is that correct, and is it the 1st time that the rally didn't start in Monte Carlo?Drive as if your life depends on it...because it does!

What do you mean with "start"? The location of TC0?

Thanks muscrae & tolis!
@jonkka: I don't know really, when is a car "officially" considered to have started a rally?
Is it at the ceremonial start-ramp, at TC 0, or at the start of the first stage? I really don't know, what do you think about that?
For example, on Eurosport, they've kept saying this year's Rally Ireland started at Enniskillen.
Was there a ceremonial start, or the start of the 1st stage, or both, or none of the two...?Drive as if your life depends on it...because it does!

Definitely not the start of the first stage. Location of the TC0 seems to vary. In Ireland ceremonial start was at Enniskillen from 19:30 onwards in Thursday but TC0 was in Sligo next day from 07:25 onwards. In Norway, where they had Super Special in Thursday, they probably had TC0 at ceremonial start (it's not listed in itinerary).
What comes to FIA rules, when crew is required to make a start in order to qualify (like in so-and-so-many-starts in certain championships in 1990's), crossing the start ramp was enough.

Hmm, so I reckon that ceremonial start is what we're looking for, then.
I believe that's what Tjeerd used to have as start on his site too.Drive as if your life depends on it...because it does!

If we want to keep a complete record then ceremonial start and TC0 should be specified.
Rally GB 2008 - Ceremonial start - Cardiff
TC0 - Swansea
Finish - Cardiff
Rally Ireland 2009 - Ceremonial Start - Enniskillen
TC0 - Sligo
Finish - Sligo
A crew that has a problem on shakedown can be allowed by the stewards not to have their car at the ceremonial start. However the crew (in overalls) must walk over the podium. There have also been rare occasions when stewards have excused someone (illness etc).
There is no parc ferme after a ceremonial start and cars can be trailered to TC0.

So, with everything said here so far, I think we can agree that taking the ceremonial start (with or without the car) should be considered as a start to the rally?
Thanks very much for your contribution Mr. Gallagher!
And taking all this into consideration, is it right then that 2008 Monte Carlo have started in Valence?Drive as if your life depends on it...because it does!
