from the WRC era it goes
WRC97 (first 2 events monte-sweden there were no roof vents)
WRC98 exterior remained the same as the 97 shell; numberplate change from P to R
WRC99 (first ran in Finland 98 continued to Safari 2000) only major body modification was the move from a dual to single roof vent
P2000 this was the machine that monstered the competition in Portugal coming back from a significant deficit
S7 debuted in Monte 2001 the first 4 door subaru WRC continued through till 2002
S8 debuted in Safari 2002 moved away from a roof vent and instead incorporated them into the front bumper area
S9 debuted in Monte 2003 back to normal style lights rather than bug-eyes and also the cheese-grater spoiler made an appearance
S10 debuted in Mexico 2004 introduction of new bumpers and a change to the spoiler
S11 debuted Mexico 2005 slight modifications again to the car
S12 debuted Monte 2006 complete change to the front end of the car"I am fed up with this car.....pfft"

I think it's more politics. These are not brands that are by their philosophy to be engaged in factory operations in WRC. So engaging with customer operations - no doubt with heavily subsidised...
