Greg Strange - the man behind iRally

To some, you might not know the name but you would know the source of rallying news.

    iRally

The app, the website, the Twitter feed.

Greg Strange the man behind the app, a passionate man who for hours on end would deliver news, updates and interviews with drivers and teams throughout the years to rally fans, followers and avid lovers of the sport.

But not only that, Greg was the man who brought to fruition World Rally Radio. From the early beginnings of Internet radio for the WRC on Dial-Up to what it has become today, covering every round through mud, gravel and snow!

He passed away yesterday from a short illness and as much as the community in the WRC and rallying around the world now know - I thought to let you all know on the forums and around the Internet to who this man was and how he showed the world of rallying.

A great article written here by a friend and his daughter.

If you have a moment to spare to think about how we are as a community, put aside the differences between us all and know how we truly have a fantastic sport to enjoy, even through the crazy proposals and changes to come, there are people like Greg in our world who believe in the sport, who work hard behind the scenes to show us what the sport has installed. Photographing, reporting, processing information. Greg was a man who shared the sport with all, his vision and idea behind iRally was a success, and one supported by many others.

    Rest in Peace Greg,
You will be missed dearly by myself, your family and many others who knew you and worked with you.

    Matt.

Sad loss, shame the WRC dumped Crown House Media in 2012.

WRC radio was better with Greg Strange.

Hope Olivia and the iRally team can do her father proud.

I met Greg at Rally Australia in 2002 and 2003, a nicer man you will never meet. Can't really say any more than that.
Rule 1 of the forum, always accuse anyone who disagrees with you of bias.I would say that though.

Thanks for posting this, Matt. Though his legacy will continue, it's important that everyone on the forum be aware of his passion for and contribution to WRC. These days, we could certainly do with a few more Greg Stranges! Ditto the previous posts, it was a pleasure to have worked with him, albeit briefly. R.I.P.

A wonderful tribute; he was a hugely passionate and knowledgeable supporter of the sport; and that came through in his broadcasts.

Is there a better sound than that of Porsche engined Flat-6 ???

    from Rally Mexico's Facebook page

It is with great sadness that we learned of Greg Strange's passing last week. Greg was foremost a great journalist dedicating most of his life to the betterment of rallying. He was a good friend to Rally Mexico. Always trying to find out the details of the upcoming event, while discussing the state of the trade off the record. He always tried to incorporate new technologies to radio broadcasting where conventional ones were useless in the middle of the dusty Mexican stages; more often than not, succeeding in unexpected ways. Rally Mexico will miss Greg. The only person who would rant for 45 minutes at 3 in the morning about the new rule that was about to kill rallying; Or the one that was about to save it. We learned a lot from him and we'd like to believe he learned from us all.

    Godspeed, Greg.
Thanks for giving us the time to talk to you.

5 years ago today rally lost a passionate advocate, an innovator who changed the way we could enjoy following events.
