Miguel Campos/António Costa were the best Portuguese crew at Rally de Portugal, 5th round of CNR, but they didn’t take champ’ship points. With Fontes accident and the absences of Barros and Vieira, Pedro Meireles drove this event in cruising mode and managed to be the first CNR scorer. He now leads the series just 5 pts more than Fontes, 6 than Barros and 12 than Vieira (a rally win values 25 pts). Teodósio won Gr.N and Antunes was the best 2wd; both extended their class leads at the series.

Rally de Portugal Top 10 CNR
    1. Pedro Meireles/Mário Castro – Fabia R5 2h44m50.6s

Pedro Meireles won Rallye Vidreiro, 6th round of CNR. The Skoda driver finally managed to show a good pace on a tarmac event, getting a deserved victory after a fantastic fight with Vieira (DS). Vieira went off close to the finish, allowing Barros (Fiesta) to inherit 2nd place, ahead of Barbosa (Fabia) and Alves (Fiesta). 5th was Lopes in a 911, ahead of Martins, Gr.N winner in a Evo X. Neto (DS) won 2wd category, in a close battle with Antunes (208). Meireles and Barros are leading the series but Fontes (recovering from RdP accident) and Vieira still have a chance. After a frantic calendar start (6 events in 5 months), now there’s a long pause till Madeira Rally (3/5 August).

Strong domination and a easy win for Breen/Hayes at Mortágua, despite early brake problems that lead to a penalty. Behind the Irish crew on the Sports&You/Vodafone DS3, there was a nice fight between Portuguese title contenders Carlos Vieira and Pedro Meireles, both using Fabia’s. Vieira, usually a DS driver but doing his first attempt on a Skoda, was always slightly faster than Meireles and managed to keep the title fight open till the last rally, in Algarve. João Barros (Fiesta) lost his chances before SS1, due to a fuel pump issue. Two more Fabias’s on P4 and P5 with Barbosa and Salvi, while Meireles older brother Paulo arrived in 6th on his debut with a i20. 2wd category was won by Daniel Nunes on a 208.

    Top 10 Rali de Mortágua
    1 Craig Breen/Andy Hayes – DS3 R5; 1h:11m:44,4s
    2 Carlos Vieira/Jorge Carvalho – Fabia R5; +27,3s
    3 Pedro Meireles/Mário Castro – Fabia R5; +40,3s
    4 Miguel Barbosa/Miguel Ramalho – Fabia R5; +1m:53s
    5 Diogo Salvi/Carlos Magalhães – Fabia R5; +5m:04,1s
    6 Paulo Meireles/Marcos Gonçalves – i20 R5; +7m:07,2s
    7 Daniel Nunes/Rui Raimundo – 208 R2; +7m:15,8s
    8 Gil Antunes/Diogo Correia – Clio R3T; +8m:40,2s
    9 Paulo Neto/Vitor Hugo – DS3 R3T; +8m:54s
    10 Paulo Antunes/Paulo Leones – 208 R2; +11m:02,6s

Carlos Vieira and Jorge Carvalho are the new Portuguese champs, on a Sports&You DS3. Vieira dominated Rallye Casinos do Algarve and with stage wins bonus he managed to beat Pedro Meireles in the series by less than 1 point! It’s a totally deserved win for Vieira, an ex GT racing champ doing only his second full CNR season. Pedro Antunes became 2wd champ in a 208 and Ricardo Teodosio (EvoX) was already GrN champ before Algarve. Foreign crews fighting for ERT came after Vieira, with Yagiz Avci (TUR) finishing in front of Vojtech Stajf (CZE).

    Top10 (after last stage):
    1. Carlos Vieira/Jorge Carvalho - Citroen DS3 R5 1:37:58.80
    2. Yagiz Avci/Bahadir Gücenmez - Skoda Fabia R5 +1:44.90
    3. Vojtech Stajf/Markéta Skácelová - Skoda Fabia R5 +2:18.50
    4. Pedro Meireles/Mário Castro - Skoda Fabia R5 +3:36.20
    5. Antonin Tlustak/Ivo Vybiral - Skoda Fabia R5 +4:03.20
    6. Ondrej Bisaha/Jiri Hovorka - Ford Fiesta R5 +4:37.70
    7. Ricardo Teodósio/José Teixeira - Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X +6:57.00
    8. Diogo Gago/Ricardo Faria - Peugeot 208 R2 +7:25.60
    9. Ricardo Costa/Rui Vilaça - Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX +8:32.00
    10.Pedro Paixão/Luis Neves - Renault Clio R3 +9:09.20

I must say that I was quite surprised by the speed of both DS3 R5 cars, both drivers did very well. But I was quite surprised by the lack of top portugese drivers which I remember from Azores. Quite disappointed by performance of Meireles, I expected he will be much faster there. And also it was nice to watch Ricardo Teodosio, despite his Evo was really powerful R4 car (so any comparison to other group N cars is nonsense).

Fontes still is recovering from the Rally Portugal crash and Barbosa in the Fabia could not make points in this rally. Same for João Barros but it is said that he is going to widraw from rallying. Elias Barros and Joaquim Alves still have their cars in the workshop after crashes and Moura just went there for 3 km! Next year hopefuly will be better.
