NRA 500: NRA to sponsor NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Texas

The winner of theNASCARSprint Cup Series race at the Texas Motor Speedway traditionally gets to fire a six-shooter in victory lane. And the pole winner gets a rifle as a prize.

But just in case you needed more reasons, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre has plenty.
“The NRA 500 is the latest announcement in the long history of a growing partnership between the NRA, Speedway Motorsports and the NASCAR community,” he said in a video shown at Texas Motor Speedway on Monday. “NRA members and NASCAR fans love their country and everything that is good and right about America. We salute our flag, volunteer in our churches and communities, cherish our families and we love racing. On April 13, we'll all come together at Texas Motor Speedway.”
The NRA previously sponsored a second-tier Nationwide NASCAR race last September in Atlanta. Of course, this sponsorship comes at a time when the NRA is dealing with a renewed debate on gun control following the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

At the Daytona 500, Michael Waltrip's car featured a paint scheme supporting a relief fund for victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.
Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said of the one-year agreement with the NRA, “It's not about politics. It's about sports marketing,” pointing out that the NRA has donated more than $500,000 to the Texas chapter of Speedway Children's Charities since 2000.
Sprint Cup rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who won the Nationwide race in Atlanta last year, also has no issue with the NRA sponsoring NASCAR races.
“The NRA is our core fan base, and we all have guns, and all us racers love to go out and shoot. It's part of who we are,” said Stenhouse, the only Cup driver at Texas Motor Speedway media day. “Anytime you have a sponsor that embraces their market and who their core customers are, it's great for us."

I have no issues with the sponsorship and truly find it to be a good fit actually. I will say that I cannot support the NRA any longer as their positions get more and more extreme, such a shame for what was once a fine organization.

You know what bothers me most about Texas (and it has happened this whole time and not just with this sponsorship). I hate celebrating by shooting pistols into the air. I think that is so irresponsible because people will imitate it. I am sure Texas is using blanks, but others are not. Man, we go to Mexico with my wife's family and people all over are shooting straight up into the air on New Year's and I hate it. I am grabbing kids and heading under a roof. They'll laugh at me and say no one's ever gotten hurt, but I know those bullets have to fall somewhere and I would hate for it to hit me or someone in my family. You can hear those things hitting roofs, and that's too close for me.

I'm rather glad to see it, to be honest. I've been an NRA Life Member for many years. And although I don't agree with the organization (or LaPierre) much of the time, I see it as the most reasonable alternative to organizations like the GOA or the JFPO - they're both pretty nutty... even to me.

Somewhere buried in a storage container, I'm sure I still have my NRA Racing cap from the mid 90's. I think I put it with my Hogan-Penske cap that I got Emmo to sign for me. I need to go on a treasure hunt this summer and find both of them.
