I might need to change my Pickem after viewing some pictures of the current stage condition :/
any feedback on ice condition / thickness?
I guess even if it snows before the rally, it won't have time to get compacted and improve the road condition...

There is still time to send water tankers through the stages I guess.

Looks better than it did in 2008 I think, the roads anyway not the scenery....
If the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off!

They try to organise the route so that most of the road sections is run on minor roads which often are more or less ice- or snowcovered. This is also a question of logistics and the concern of the rally not being hindered by heavy spectator traffic. For the long haul between Karlstad-Hagfors and return the teams fit studless or studded "normal" wintertyres on the cars. The 90 kms to and from Hagfors on dry tarmac would certainly ruin the competition tyres. Thats why each day starts with a 10 minute service in Hagfors before the go out to the first stage.

Not a lot of snow in Norway either, but quite good icecover on the roads. Rally Finnskog last saturday still showed a lot of gravel coming through for the second run of stages. Tyre management will most definitely be a major point in the rally, unless it continues to snow a lot, like it does here in Oslo at the moment...
