Back to the thread I think the forum has changed in recent years. There are far less contentious issues and whenever some of the forum elite get challenged to account for themselves, they tend to resort to intelligent insults and punctuation policing rather than debate (or as I like to call it 'arguement')

Because it was about marking Remembrance Sunday only. It wasn't a 'discussion' thread as such.

Should it have been open in the first place then? It could have been closed after the OP then it wouldn't have tempted any comments and those unsure of what 'Remembrance Day' was would not have been able to ask.

I wanted others to be able to leave comments too

I assumed it had been closed just in case it attracted negative comments.

The people that abuse these types of threads sicken me but will always do it. Surely free speech is about understanding this and no matter how distasteful by affording them that option?

Surely that is one of the core beliefs behind the sacrifice made by the people we remember on 11/11. If people want to know more or comment, for whatever reason, then why not? If they break forum rules then deal with them but an open forum should be open to discussion, whatever the subject, within the rules we signed up to. It should not be governed by the beliefs and sensibilities of the Mods no matter how well meaning, within the forum code.

I tend to agree (even though one person's definition of what constitutes a suitable comment in such a discussion will often differ from another's). Either don't have a thread or allow discussion.
