    Just having good tyres makes a difference. I've got from a set of "Sunny" (who?) tyres to Michelin Pilot Sport and the difference in grip is immense!

    those are true winter rally tires with rally spikes and to be honest I don't know much about them except a fellow Spanish donkey (nickname was "speedy" González but that's another story ) developed the Trophée Andros tyres a few years back when Conti became the tire supplier.
    I guess they'd provide better grip so long as you're on ice or deepish snow, but would lose much of their advantage on compacted snow and would be crap if they dig down to the tarmac. The old mechanical (pattern or studs) vs compound (softer is better but can't hold studs) dilemma
