And.... anyone going to it from overseas? Anyone been before? I'm keen to go over.... hard to justify a $2000 flight from Australia... but still....

We're actually very happy with the long stages (SS 14, 21 and 23). We think it provides a great challenge for the crews, and epic stages like those are as close as we can get these days to the feeling of great adventure that lies at the heart of rallying. If anything, it represents a great risk for us. Should someone have a big off and we're forced to cancel the stage, we lose a great percentage of competitive distance, and enrage a correspondingly large number of spectators. Risk vs. reward took some discussing, but in the end we went with it. Let's all hope it pays off.
As to having too many kms., our rally is the most compact in the calendar! Look at the itineraries of other WRC events and you'll see the difference. Liaison stages are the shortest of the year. If you mean too many competitive kms. then I'm sure you'll find most events will follow the FIA's guidance and increase competitive distance for 2012. We went from 365 to 430 because of that. Keeping the Special Stages close to 40% of total distance took some doing, but the results are pretty awesome.
If anyone wants information to plan a visit, let me know. I'd be glad to help.Eugenio Perea - Communications - Rally Mexico
