My local team Chelmsford City just lost 2-1 to bottom side last week and Saturday lost 0-6 at home to 3rd bottom. We are know 2nd bottom.

Its going to be a long hard season.

Though to be fair, the five year ban from European football imposed by Thatcher's Government in English clubs and the ten year ban imposed specifically on Liverpool (though in the end not fully enforced), probably helped to put the course of English football well and truly into the dustbin for a while.
With no Europe to aim for, Liverpool did win the double in 1986, nearly did so in 1988 and had the double stitched up all the way until 137 seconds before the end of the 1988/89 season when Michael Thomas scored in my opinion, the single most important goal in the entire of English domestic football ever.

That single goal, after the terrible events of April that year, brought football back into the civilised world and at the same time did more to convince what would be companies like BSkyB that there was a lot more money waiting to be untapped. That goal I think probably helped more than any other, convince the rights sorts of people to set up the Premier League and possibly lay the template for the Champions League in it current form.
